If we finish with pick 2 we would be ok in all likelihood. Apparently Blues are set on Weitering leaving Schache to pick 2. If Suns lose Dixon they would probably be very interested in Schache
Do you seriously think the Blues would use pick 1 on a key position defender? No way. If you have a high draft pick you use it on a key position forward, if there is one available around your pick. History shows that you can draft a elite KPD from anywhere in the draft.

Harris Andrews (pick 44)
Alex Rance (Pick 17)
Ted Richards (Pick 27 2000 National Draft)
Michael Johnson (Pick 8 2003 Pre-Season Draft)

So by that logic the widely recognised best player in the draft doesn't get picked in the 1st round......

Weitering is widely considered the best player in the draft so will go pick 1. Simple.

Only one club in the AFL would be a chance not to draft Weitering pick 1 - us. and that is only because of our need for a forward. And even we might draft him given he can apparently play forwards as well.

In the 1st round clubs 99% of the time pick the best player available, regardless of position, and guess what? That is Weitering.

Except that Weitering is actually shaping as a clear consensus No 1 pick, and perhaps not just as in the top 3, in which case I would agree you would take the KPF....

(edit - beaten to it...lol).

Big fan of Collins from what i saw during the champs.

Seems he will be around the 8-15 mark.

Could be a great get if we had a pick in this range....

Is going to be interesting if the Blues and we are on the same points come round 23 ... they will know exactly how many points they need to lose to the Hawks by since we play before them ... should such things be a consideration for them of course!

Was going to post the same.Apparently the Blues want to get a lot out of the rest of the season.Practising the application of a hard tag in round 23 won't be something they'll look at.

Only seen little bits of Collins, but have to say I'm a little bit reticent about spending high picks on guys who do well based on probably temporary physical advantages. He's rag dolling skinny stick insects now, but he's never going to have that sort of advantage over Tex Walker or Tom Lynch or Kennedy.

Not to say he won't be a really useful pickup, but perhaps more Aliparte Carlyle than Harry Taylor.

More for next year:

Jacob Allison (Lions Academy): The Aspley product with an extraordinarily powerful kick makes the right choices with ball in hand and almost never turns the footy over. Another taller prospect at 193cm.

"He'll be one of the elite kicks we're talking about next year. Already as a 17-year-old he's kicking the ball 60m and he's one of those penetrating, low, hard kicks of the footy". – Sanderson.

Elite user at 193cm? Yes please.

In case you haven't seen it: http://www.afl.com.au/video/2015-06-20/u18s-jacob-allison-bangs-it-from-60

Don't be too concerned we do play Adelaide away before Hawks and then WB

I would imagine the club would have an eye on next years crop. As someone else has stated that they wouldn't mind if Aish left for a first round pick in next years draft and with it being a midfielders draft I would do it as well. With Swan saying that we'll go to the draft this year I can see that being the MO for the next few as well in getting as much quality to our club. If we were to get Allison without blowing out the rest of the draft and get two/three highly rated prospects would be ideal. I reckon that the club is in rebuild mode without coming out and publicly stating it but if you read between the lines it looks like that's the way they're thinking. Swan is pushing for PP and I think that the Luey compo will be what will be used to possibly facilitate that.

Terry Wallace (Future Stars) was extremely forthright that we should get a pick directly after our first one if Leuey was to leave (probably to Essendon or the Bulldogs who need a #1 ruckman).

Put up stats comparing James Frawley and the stats were fairly compelling.

Leuey 4 months older, but went 8 places higher in the draft a year earlier. Both a tad over 100 games (when leaving). Shifter chimed in that length of contract and dollar amount not the only things considered when they decide compensation, whilst Naaaafan Brown suggested that Leuey was on a fair wicket at the Lions so the deal would have to be a decent one for him to move.

I'd take Carlisle over a pick #2 if Essendon were involved, personally

If we got that it would be Schache and Weitering every day of the week. Talk about setting up your spine for the next decade or so. It would be a big turn around from not having much to having it pretty well much locked in.

Carlisle for pick 2? Weitering would be way better proposition than Carlisle to be honest.

That's incredibly hard to judge.

Carlisle is a very good senior level defender. I'd argue that he's All Australian capable if allowed to settle into defence. Weitering hasn't played a game at the same level.

Let me rephrase. We have a core group of defense coming through at present, enabling us to not rely on Weitering as the main KPD. With this in mind, I'd be comfortable taking him rather than Carlisle for pick 2. Reading all the reviews, Weitering's ceiling appears to be really high.

If you put the same argument to the forward line - will I pay pick 2 for a capable young KPF, I probably will. Provided I still have pick 1 in my bag, to get the best player in the draft.

Weitering is a prospect. Like all of them in the draft. Carlisle is 23 and can lock down CHB at a very high level for the next 7-9 years.

A bird in the hand...

Andrews I'm sold on as a defensive prospect that could be a superstar, even though he's the youngest. The rest I cannot see being anything more than OK defenders moving forward (at this stage of their development):

Clarke
Gardiner
McStay

Day made Clarke look second rate last night on several occasions - hoping he becomes the player we all want him to be, but from what I've seen - he's got a long way to go (which is totally fine as he's playing in a very average defence at age 21).

I think Allison initially could help us with our lack of speed and skill off half back. Play a similar role to Birchall.

Maybe we should Delist Clarke if Day smashed him from the sidelines.

All typos aside, I think you've answered your own question. Clarke is 21 and for most of the season had to be our teams most senior defender. He struggled at times, excelled at others, but overall held his own very well considering he had to take the oppositions very best forward each week. If you want to put blame on anybody for last night, I'd have it on the group as a whole. Merrett, the senior defender, had an off game which imo brought the whole backlines efforts down. It happens to all defenders/defenses, unfortunately it happened to us in the wrong game. Another thing I thought that effected us at times was paparone starting forward/mid and Mcstay being down back. Paparone helped settle the backline at times, but we certainly didn't look cohesive which was disappointing.

In conclusion, it is really hard to expect more from a 21 year old footballer with just on 50 games experience.

Day played. Didn't do much though

Yep, totally agree. Just wish he and Gardiner could be on the 3rd / 4th best forward - getting a Carlisle would make that happen straight away. Or even a Tarrant. It's rare that a really successful defender doesn't initially learn his craft from a top line defender when he begins to play AFL.

Ours, unfortunately, are

I know this will sound crazy but I would rather loose the last four games then see schache end up at Carlton. I know a lot of people believe Carlton would pick weitering if they end up with the number one pick, but if Carlton were to loose Henderson to Geelong, I think you would find them very interested in schache. So bring on the wooden spoon and schache.
