Probably showed too much as a defender now.

Andrews and Hipwood give us a lot of flexibility moving forward, you'd think one of them will play forward at some stage. Can't wait until both of them bulk up, they are both unbelievably athletic for their size.

I'm not really sold on Weitering. He is the best Key back, but has shown nothing as a key forward. Never the less spending pick 2 on a key back is risky.

All Australian key backs in the last 3 years are:
2014-
Alex Rance (Pick 17)
Daniel Talia (Pick 13)
Cale Hooker (Pick 54)

2013-
Scott Thompson (Pick 37)
Harry Taylor (Pick 17)
Michael Johnson (Pick 8, PSD)

2012-
Luke McPharlin (Pick 10)
Ted Richards (Pick 27)
Darren Glass (Pick 11)

Hipwood played forward for the reserves this weekend, kicked 3 goals in a big loss to the Suns.
Hopefully both countinue their development, be a great combo to have.

Yeah I know, very impressive. Even more exciting is they're both QLD kids, thank **** for the academy.

Yeah but how many Key backs were taken in the top 10? Weitering is definitely worthy of pick 1 or 2 and would be too 5 in every draft. He is going to be IMO a top 3 KPD one day.

Weitering is the type of defender you build a team around. No doubting his talent. I think with how well Andrews has done this year, as well as Paps showing a bit down back, we are pretty well stocked for defenders. I think our defense is pretty set for the next 10 years going forward. We still have no certain forward though, and Schache is a forward we can build around. Will take him a few years, but he will show plenty of signs along the way.

I think Weitering is the safest pick but we have to chance our arm at the forward. They are more valuable salaries of 1 mill are not bandied around for key backs.I think Carlton will pick Schache if they have a choice.

Is it just me or are the powers that be at HQ making it harder to get off the bottom. They are continually making it harder to draft from the academy...

It is all because Sydney got the first real bargain from the Academy and they are a top 4 side. There is no justice.

hmmm...... Apparently Josh Schache has a Step-Brother Lachie, who is also a key forward and has been picked for the Murray Bushrangers despite being an underager and not draft eligible until next year....

Does anyone know if he is any good? I don't see much of the TAC Cup

I've seen him play several times and think he is definitely a draft prospect but unless he has a growth spirt won't be key position. Will post a pic when I find it.

I get it, but we are not getting the best value out of that pick and I doubt we will have a pick as high as this in the near future. I rather trade pick 2 for a Jonathan Patton, Tom Lynch, Cameron McCarthy, Josh Bruce or Jack Darling type of player. You don't need to use a top 2 pick on a key defender. History shows that you can pick one up from anywhere in the draft.

except its unlikely we would get any of these guys, hence we hold onto it and get Weitering.

If i recall correctly Roughead was considered a key defender when he was drafted, and look what he has now become

Apologies if this has been discussed already (can't seem to find the search function and I'm not scanning through 80 pages!)...
What are the thoughts about trying to pick up the Josh Thomas (and Lachie Keeffe) via the rookie draft? I did read that the Lions are interested, and also read that the Pies are keen to keep them.

I see Josh Thomas is from Queensland (and plans to live up there next year) - perhaps get Beams in his ear over the coming months?

My opinion: definitely worth a shot - particularly with Josh being a northerner. Have proven ability. We would effectively lose a spot (or 2) on the rookie list for a year - but no worse then having an untried "project player" taking that spot.

I'd rather Jonathon Patton or others listed as well it it won't happen.
I think Swanny has made it clear we're going to the draft. (Not trading top picks).

If we get pick 1 and 2 then we pick Weitering first and Schache second. Weitering is ready to add class to our team next year.'

I would rather avoid the spoon and get 2 and 3 and netting Schache and Francis though!!

Probably ok to have thomas but not okeefe, just his age is a bit of a concern.

History also shows you can get mids later in the draft, so by that reasoning you shouldnt take mids high up either.

It is unusual to have a key defender at pick 2 yes, but that is an indication of just howgood he is. He wont just be a good defender, he will most likely be the dominate defender in the comp for the next decade, and he is just about ready to play off the bat.
