If we manage to get pick 1+2, another top 20 pick for Aish I think we will have the foundations to our next premiership team. Weitering, Schache, Keays, Hipwood and enough points left over to pick up Chol, William and Wagner if we want to. Hope the AFL just give us pick 2 as a FA/PP combo for Berger.

Ive only just relized that if Ben Keays tests well at the combine and enters top5 discussions and we end up with pick 2 or 3, then whoever picks 1 may bid for him and force us to use our first pick on him as we will likely overbid for homegrown talent.. first time ive hoped we get the spoon

Let him go to carlton for pick 1.. Then we get the pick of weitering and schache.. In 2 years hopefully Benny gets home sick!

Interestingly... Speaking to 2 recruiters (from different clubs) over the weekend, both said that the top 20-30 players results really don't mean a lot at the combine because they already have done their homework on them all year. The main interest comes from the potential draftee's lower down the order primarily because they haven't seen as much of them throughout the year. Guess that makes sense.o_O

Keays for me is a priority for the Lions. Local boy, ball magnet and fantastic talent. It would be a tragedy if we miss out on any of the high achieving Academy boys. ie. Keays, Wagner, Hipwood, William....
The only reservation I have about Weitering is that his manager is Pickers. He's an unbelievable talent and I also think he would be just as effective up forward as well as down back, BUT, how long would he stay in Brisbane? The Lions want need players in the squad who want to play at Brisbane, not just because they were drafted there. Not 100% sure Weitering fits that criteria. (could be wrong)

Yeah. The positions of the higher draft picks don't really a change a lot based on combine results. There's always a few kids who come out and tear the combine up that weren't really on many clubs radar's though.

FWIW Agility is something that majority of clubs tend to prefer over speed.

I think we have to be weary that whoever we take with pick 1 or 2 will immediately be put towards the top of every list of potential targets from opposition teams recruiters and I agree that Weitering would seem to be a bigger risk of getting poached due to Pickering being his manager so given the choice it would seem Schache is a smarter option.

Guys like Keays and Hipwood have already been tested numerous times with their time in the AFL Academy. Unless they pull something completely out of the bag the testing is not likely to be huge for those types. Interview performance can have an affect though.

would it be ideal if the academy guys did a wingard at their interviews?
I think it's unlikely a kid from QLD with an AFL dream is going to intentionally put off other suitors just because he might prefer to stay in QLD in circumstances where he doesn't even know if the Lions will nominate him let alone draft him.

That's a dangerous game for Carlton to play. I'm almost certain we wouldn't match a #1 pick for Keays. Our need for a KPF is all anyone ever talks about.

No doubt our recruiting Dept would be gutted to lose Keays, but Carlton then HAVE to spend pick 1 on Keays - and explain that to a supporter base that is already filthy on their recruiting record.

And the winners aren't Carlton, but the handful of clubs below us that ostensibly move up a spot.

Balls like melons to pull that one.

Yep I highly doubt we will match a pick one bid for Keays or Hipwood. Im pretty sure they will have it figured out pre draft the line cost they are willing to pay to pick them up. Whether that is 5 or 10 or 15 it is hard to know

I think we need to draft in a big bodied KPD. Clarke seems a bit light on to handle the likes of Boyd and Patton. We need another Merrett down back.

Clarke is a lot bigger than he looks on TV. Just needs to learn how to use it. Plus you won't see a KPD with a bigger frame than his.

Weitering maybe? He's a bloody big unit for an 18 year old and probably more defined than Clarke even now.

Worth remembering Clarke is coming from a long way back body wise. Footy was barely on his radar as a junior, just playing for local bush sides. I doubt he would have done any weights bar lifting items round the farm so he's coming from a lower base than most. If you see him up close you realise just how big he is and how big he will get. He has a massive frame on him and I'd say within the next season and a half he'll be matching it size and strength wise with those big key forwards. While size is important in one on one contests, most of it is about strength through your core giving you the ability to retain your balance and centre whilst being pushed and pulled in multiple directions.

Would be putting too many eggs in that basket for mine. If we draft Hipwood, maybe get one as a rookie.

I hope that is the case. I rate Clarke but just worry about him getting pushed off the ball a bit when playing on the big boys.

One great thing about pick 1 is that it's the only time you can be sure who the club really wanted with their first pick instead of the usual "we rated him higher" type b.s.

Reminds me of the members of the public who claimed Ablett was "underrated" as the No 1 player in the game in that top 50 done during the year.
