What is the depth of your knowledge on him? If this is the first you have heard of him he is a Lions academy prospect, he showed some solid form throughout the U18 Champs and other games for Queensland against TAC Cup teams and he has played some nice games for the Lions reserves including yesterday in which he had 16 possessions and kicked 3 goals. The thing that I really like about him and am excited about is his pace. Reminds me a little bit of Pearce Hanley. He will be a raw prospect to start off with but he definitely has some assets that will serve him well when trying to carve out an AFL career.Im listening... Tell me about him?

It is players like Williams that even though they are not as highly rated as Keays and Hipwood that they still might be by the lions and it is fanciful thinking to make comments like just send Aish to the PSD but this might mean we miss out on a player like Williams.William's improvement this season has been impressive and has moved him in my opinion from rookie chance to a ND certainty. He's got plenty to work on still, but clubs love those late bloomers and there's plenty of upside there. Hope the Lions can afford to pick him up.

I would still be wary about putting too much emphasis on form in the NEAFL and Div 2 Queensland sides. I would think Hipwood and Keays are obvious gets but the others, not sure about. If we don't get them, l have faith in the recruiting department to make the right choice as they have seen more than us. They do seem to make good choices with later picks ... if only they can make better with their 1st pick choices. If we want to take him we will be able to, it just means we carry a deficit into next year.
I also read somewhere we won't be able to take part in bidding for academy players if we are already at a deficit. Example would be Keays and Hipwood costing us all our picks and a slight deficit into next year (assuming both get top 15 bids or thereabouts), we would not be able to match any bids on other academy prospects at all even if they are going to cost us 0 draft points after 25% discount.I would still be wary about putting too much emphasis on form in the NEAFL and Div 2 Queensland sides. Good thinking that does sound promising. dlanod As the academy "expert" could you possibly confirm this?I don't have the degree required to understand the academy system, but it sounds like the recent change to the system where the deficit generated in a certain round this year affects the same round next year could come in handy for someone like William. Provided we get Keays and Hipwood without going into deficit, we'll be able to match a third round bid for William and it only affects our third round pick next year (instead of our first).

Let's just hope we get at least a top 25 pick for Aish to off set this.

Jas nailed it. According to the article on its introduction, it was specifically to handle this, i.e. avoiding a situation where clubs don't want to match late bids because it would devalue their first rounder.
Out of interest, say we match a third round pick which impacts our third round pick next year, when is the pick shifted down? Is it before or after the compensation picks get dished out? I assume that dropping from say pick 35 to 45 has a different points value to dropping from 40 to 50.
Reading between the lines it was brought in as a result of lobbying by Carlton because of a couple of prospective father/sons they have this year...not academy clubs like some had assumed (cos really, why would the League pay any attention to frontier clubs...).Nah that's a misread of the system. It's only if we have a deficit that takes out all our picks in the draft (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th, minus any used for trades). If we have a deficit that's covered by our existing picks we're ok.

I know the media had built last night up as the Schache cup but I think it might not have had too much bearing on who Carlton and who we will pick. I still see them going for Weitering when you look at what they have down back with Jamieson pretty well much finished and not really not too much else. Understandably they also need a KPF and depending on who they trade out (Henderson and Yarren) they would most probably get first round picks for them and the likes of Weiderman, Burton, Curnow, Skinner and H.McKay still left on the table to get KPF's. That's what I'm telling myself anyway!
I've got everything crossed!!!!!!Carlton seem very, very keen on Weitering and considering their KPD stocks it's quite understandable. Weitering was the VC skipper and would help that club immensely. Schache will be welcomed to Brisbane with open arms
If that is what happens on draft night, Lions v Blues games will be that much more exciting over the next 10+ year's with the top two picks battling it out

That's a good way to give yourself testicular torsion.I've got everything crossed!!!!!!
