2015 Draft Discussion

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Hi all,

Apologies for the intrusion, but considering the level of interest from Brisbane Lions fans surrounding this year's Draft, I thought you might be interested to hear that the Club will be hosting a special 'Draft Night' event in Melbourne (Platform 28 at Docklands) on 24 November.

It's something that we've never done before, and figured 2015 would be as good a year as any to trial something new like this.

Essentially it will be a big screen viewing of the Draft in Melbourne, with some of our recruiters (those who aren't in SA) in attendance to provide blow-by-blow commentary and show exclusive vision of our selections as they're drafted.

You can find out full details HERE

Information about the event will be promoted on lions.com.au and through our social channels later this week, but I thought I'd give those passionate (and vocal) draft followers on BigFooty a head-start in terms of accessing tickets. We're limiting space to just the first 100 bookings, 40 of which have already been sold through priority access for player sponsors, coaches club, coteries etc.

If it proves popular, then it might just become a regular fixture on our events calendar in VIC (although hopefully we don't get used to having high draft picks each year).

Guests will also receive an in-depth recruiters' guide which will profile some of the top prospects, outline our recent draft history, and explain how the Academy bidding system works (I obviously have to brush up on that myself!)

Even if you can't attend, I'd be interested to hear your feedback as to whether you think it's a worthwhile initiative for the future.
Well done mate....great idea !

The idea has certainly been floated. With the bulk of our recruiters based at Etihad Stadium, it made sense to hold this one in Melbourne. But with some pretty handy Queenslanders coming through the ranks in the Academy, there's no reason why it can't be replicated at the Gabba in the future.

It would be great to possibly stream it as well for some of us further reaching fans who wont be able to make the trip down for it...Id watch it if it were streamed on the Clubs site!

This sounds like an awesome idea, one that is very appealing to people like myself who can't get along to ressies games and rely on the great work of people like Crusha and Quigs to provide player info.

Also just want to say it is great seeing a club person such as yourself on the boards. :)

Another question on points and bidding (if anyone has some info). Again, using Allison as the example. If Brisbane is holding pick 5, and another club says they will take him at pick 4, Brisbane will agree to match the bid.

Brisbane's pick 5 is worth 1878 points.
Allison at pick 4 would cost 2034 - 20% so total 1627.

Do we get the remaining 251 points credited back somewhere? I've not seen any examples where this is illustrated. All the examples I have seen so far talk about a point deficit - ie. we need an additional 251 points, so our next pick would slide in the draft by the equivalent of 250 points. If our next pick is pick 23, then this would slide to 33.

Also, further to this point posted late last week, hopefully the below (taken from the official AFL Bidding System Rule book issued to Club recruiters) serves as some clarification:

Once the player has been “paid” for by the forfeiting of a single selection or multiple selections, there may be a surplus of points. With the exception of the circumstance set out below, those surplus points are converted to another selection in the current National Draft using the DVI.

The exception to the above point is where a player is bid for at pick 18 or earlier and the Club’s next available selection is worth more points than the value that must be paid to acquire the player. In this case, the surplus points are not converted to a selection in the current National Draft, but are retained and used to offset any deficit arising at the conclusion of this National Draft or future National Drafts.

Thanks for digging that up! That's a new piece of info compared to what was released to us poor plebs. :D

For $70 I'd hope to get a few drinks included. Great initiative by the club but value proposition is a bit hard to justify.

I'm sure there are 100 people who can afford to justify that expense for the insight on offer.

If it was in Brisbane I'd definitely pay for something like that. $70 seems like a bargain to get inside some of the heads making big decisions at the club

As long as there are sausage rolls included, I'll be happy...
