I can't see any club bidding on a player they don't intend on taking. Stakes are just too high for that kind of tomfoolery
Perhaps it's time for the next "line in the sand" moment... Swann to come and and give it a bit of "we absolutely won't be matching any bids on our academy players inside the top-10, so nominate at your peril of you don't want them!".
After such a strong stand during the trade period where Aish was pushed to the PSD*, other clubs would have no choice but to believe him.

*This is still happening right? We haven't backed down yet have we? Because saying something like that and not following through would really not do much to instill fear in our words going forward!

Personally still can't say I'd match a top 15 pick for Hipwood.
Yeah you would. if the player available at pick 17 (assuming that's still our next available pick) is not a better player than Hipwood, then you will match the pick. The only reason I can see us not matching a pick is if it means we're going to be throwing everything at one player and force us to pass on the next, and/or carry over a debt.

Keays & Hipwood both grew up in Melbourne
Not sure this is quite true. I know Hipwood has lived on the Sunny Coast for a fair while. Not sure what he was doing earlier but I'm fairly sure he did high school up here.

And Keays has been playing juniors for Morningside for years, never heard of a Melbourne connection before.

I don't rate him as high as others do, plain and simple. Sure I'm going against the majority but I've done it plenty of times before, sometimes I'm wrong and sometimes I'm right. And I'm comfortable with that. I spend half of my time watching junior footy, it's what I do. I live in Melbourne which means I have not been able to see a lot of him(my focus is purely TAC Cup and the odd state league game if I can fit it in. But I've seen enough to make my own opinion.

I haven't seen him at all (I live in Germany for god's sake!). My rationale is more around if we don't use pick 17 on him, who would we get instead? Assuming we have to match Keays and Hipwood above pick 17 and out next pick is 39... if we pass on Hipwood and take Keays with 17 then what do we get for pick 39? Surely Hipwood shows more potential than what's likely available at 39.

If we only had Hipwood to match, and we thought we could do better at 17 than take Hipwood, then by all means pass on him.

Since 2002, according to his Wikipedia page (yes, an undrafted footballer has a Wikipedia page!).

Just found out his great grandfather fought in Gallipoli and played senior football for both Fitzroy (5 games) and Collingwood (3 games) for a return of 1 goal (while playing for Fitzroy).

The connection is strong.

Wikipedia :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Was also surprised to read that his net worth exceeds $50 million after inventing the purple monkey dishwasher. Amazing for a 17 year old if true. No references for that information though so I have no choice but to be suspicious of that last paragraph of info. ;)

Quite amazing to think the last 3 drafts (this including have brought us the likes of:

Taylor
Mcstay
Robertson
Freeman
Gardiner
Aish*
Mcgrath
Beasley
Andrews
Dawson
Schache
Hipwood
Keays

Who all look very promising prospects for the long term.

*douche bag

Pretty good strike rate - 12 good to very good players / 1 douche bag

Of course if you include pre 2014 drafts the douche bag side increases by 5

Even if our next pick after the Bastinac trade is in the 30s? You fancy getting something better with that pick?

I personally predict a lot of surprises on draft day

Keays & Hipwood both grew up in Melbourne, not much of a flight risk for a Vic club. Apparently they still have family in Melbourne.
Hipwood born in Melbourne. Moved to Sunny Coast when 3 years old. Loved soccer when young and was going to be his only winter sport till Lions Academy spotted him playing school afl & invited him into it. Loved cricket also & played plenty of rep for his region.
Was always a average height till 16 & then started a massive growth spurt. Played most of his junior afl as a wingman or on baller till 15 then played a kpf for Caloundra Seniors up until last year.

Depends who's available, I have Hipwood rated around that pick 25 - 30 range. I've missed a bit of the news about trade week. What's the supposed deal for Bastinac?

I have Hipwood at 10.

Love the thought of what he could do for our team as a ruck.

It would be nice if some academy boys did a wingard and scared the other clubs off in the combine interviews
I heard Hipwood smokes and refuses to give it up.
