As I said, haven't seen a lot of him. Has he spent much time in the ruck before?

I can't recall seeing him ruck. In fact when I have seen him attend ruck contests it has been as a rover (where he is surprisingly effective).

It just seems to make a lot of sense to try and turn him into a ruck. He has the height and if he can be competitive in the ruck contest itself the freedom that playing in the ruck would allow him would make him a big weapon for us. He could also go forward or back and be a big weapon there. He would be another midfielder who would be an excellent bail out target. He has the best mobility of any 203cm player I have seen and his play reading ability is great. His skills are a bit hit and miss but when they are on they are great. I do think his growth spurt has probably influenced the consistency of his kicking and when he settles down he will be a very good kick of the ball.

Ruck is one position which we need to address and there are a lot of tools that make me think that Hipwood might not just be the answer but an elite option that redefines the role.

If he's still growing or just had a big growth spurt of course his skills wont be on point. Most tall kids have real gumby years while the nerves and stuff catch up to the growth. I'm surprised his kicking is so good for having such a massive and late growth spurt. In a couple years when it all catches up he's gonna be an absolute weapon. I also think him rucking could be a game changer. Stefan Martin 2.0 but potential to be a lot lot better

There is a good chance Chol could get bid on from the 3rd round on. Do you think we match if he does?

That's an exciting thought.

Having said that, I can't shake a natural reluctance to throw our young, talented prospects into the ruck. Whether it is actually the gabba or something else, playing ruck for us almost guarantees prolonged bouts of injury. Just for my interest, do you think he could (for example) spend time as a dedicated wing at AFL level?

This whole Draft mechanism and the complex rules which have evolved due to meddling from vested interests is surely in need of a shake up. I believe it could be much simpler and fairer if handled as an Auction and Trading system. We have moved in this direction with the points allocation already.
Teams would bid on or trade players in Draft Dollars which they received based on finishing position. A simple system would have 18th receiving $5000 descending by $200 a position to $1600 for the Premiers.
Each team must take a minimum of 3 players on Draft night. Academy kids would get a drafting club a $200 bonus, Father son $100 bonus and Free agents maybe $500 top up to the losing club received from the purchasing club or similar. Hawthorn could still get a Free Agent through trading but they would seriously weaken their Auction position for further picks on Draft night.
A system like this should stop tanking as and reduce the impact of Free Agent losses.. Just my simple thoughts as I watch on as people on this board tear each other to pieces due to confusion over the value of picks and points. Draft night Auction and Trade week hagging would be great fun as well just like the Magic Millions! Would this work or am I missing something?

I don't think he'll actually end up in the ruck; I think he will end up being our version of Blicavs in the midfield, obviously without the elite endurance, but certainly with his athleticism. He could develop into a very damaging midfield player.

I have Hipwood at 10.

Love the thought of what he could do for our team as a ruck.

My rating is probably "biased" because I have seen more of the Queensland boys than I have of the others.

But thinking with an Academy bidding hat on, I have only 5 ahead of Hipwood, that I would not match a bid in order to select:
Weitering
Schache
Hopper
Francis
*Kennedy
.............. so I guess that means I currently have him at 6.

(*Kennedy I have not seen anything of other than his match in the Grand Final curtain-raiser - but saw enough there to believe the "hype").

As for Keays, I have another 6 that I would prefer before matching a bid, so that would place him at 13.

That is not where I necessarily believe they will be rated by the clubs, just where I have them relative to others that I like, and matching a bid.

I think I've said this before but I can see a Westhoff type role for Hipwood. He might be nominally a forward but can push up the wings and can go behind the footy when required during games. As with Westhoff, he can ruck but his lack of size might count against him doing that role permanently.

supposedly he measured 203cm at the combine.

I am curious as to how the AFL, all the clubs and the non-NSW &QLD clubs think of the point system and academy players so far in regards to how the trades have gone.

It has become easier for any club that doesn't have an academy to move up the draft which would have to make Eddie happy. Was this one of the intentions or is it just a result of clubs working the system to their advantage?

It'll be fascinating now to see if any of the clubs who traded into the top 10 bid on academy players. I suspect not...at least for the club's they did the trade with... Gentleman's agreement etc.

Whilst I know they will be used for academy kids we have 5 draft picks in a row is that a record?

Also with our future picks does that mean next year we will be barracking for whoever is playing the Saints and whoever is playing the roos?
