Same. Schache is going to be the better player IMO, absolute gun with no real deficiencies

I certainly won't be crying if we get Weitering... By far the best player in the draft. Would be a huge get for us.

His manager on the other hand...

Carlton will take Weitering; no need to stress

Now that we're at the end of trade week I can't see anybody upset that we beat the doggies to avoid that spoon! Pick 2 was a blessing in disguise.

I think Schache will be the more valuable player down the track. He really is the complete package for a KPF. We can deal with not having an attacking CHB like Weitering, but it's a lot harder to win games of footy without a big key forward

In the champs they threw Weitering forward and looked a gun up there too.

Like Brab mentioned, we have nothing to worry about with Schache. Weitering is the clear number 1, we have pick 2 :)

Schache is exactly the type of player we need but don't expect any miracles. It's going to take at least 3-4 seasons for him to fill out and be a dominant forward.

Yeah Weitering is a good swingman who can do some damage up forward, but Schache is clearly ahead of him purely as a forward IMO. Schache just looks very natural as a forward, gets to the right spots, pushes up the ground, leads well, clean hands, clever around goals, agile, fairly quick off the mark, huge tank, very accurate kick for goal and a decent field kick. What more would you want in a forward? As opposed to Weitering who looks much more competent as a defender. I just think Schache will be more valuable to our side than Weitering. McStay can be our swingman

After the dust has settled after the trade period it is pretty evident that we are focusing on taking Schache/Weideman and then Keays and Hipwood. The only issue I have with the amount of points that we are left with is that it doesn't really leave us with much room for another one of our academy boys. I would like to see one of Chol or Williams also taken and even though that they would be project players i think that they would add another dimension for our team. Might also be the romantic in me but with where they have had to come from I would love to see them prt of our squad and future.

I desperately hope the club does not chase Weideman! His dad and grandfather both played for the Pies, it would only be a matter of time before he requested a trade to them....

Would've been entertaining to muck around with Wobbles regarding Aish if we had PSD #1. ;).

That said, I don't want the spoon so I am glad we did avoid it.

Would be interesting to know how Schache is compared to the previous set of forwards in Boyd, McCartin etc.
i asked that same question of knightmare on the draft board a few weeks back and he rated schache right up there with all the high draft key forwards of the last few years.

"Shifter" Sheahan rated him on top of all the KPF's to come through the TAC Cup in recent seasons.... for what that's worth.

EDIT: "This has been the best set of five games I've seen in living memory"

I hope Schache will be the player we want him to be. IMO it will take him a couple of years to be our #1 forward. He needs time to devolp and we need to just ease him into seniors.

Yeah of course, no doubting that. He isn't going to have an immediate impact, but he's got all the attributes to become an elite key forward at AFL level down the track. I'd be very surprised if he doesn't make it

The problem for us is that in a few years time we won't be able to get our hands on the academy kids at all and will be crippled.

Here's an idea. What if the northern frontier clubs see their best chance the secure the future of their Academies is to have some good success stories at other clubs?

With Schache, Hipwood, Andrews, and Archie Smith, we've got a lot a thin young talls and the reality is, we'll struggle to find opportunities for Chol without compromising one of the others.

If Chol or Williams ended up as good news stories at Melbourne or Essendon or Adelaide that might ultimately make it easier to sell the 'Academies are good for everyone' argument.

We're getting the diamonds and we want to make sure that continues in the future. Sometimes it's useful to let a few pearls slip through to make everyone feel good about themselves.

The first time a Heeney comes along, Eddie gets grumpy and has the system changed. If Hopper Keays and Mills all debut and land rising star nominations by round 10, you'll be able to hear the teeth gnashing from space.

Our best defence against that Kickback might be Chol getting a rising star nomination for Adelaide (or wherever).

Until one of them becomes a star at another club and the media decide to clip the Lions... "geez they have these academies and they arent even using it properly... how did they let this kid go!"

At which point we activate the must come home after 2 years clause that we put into all academy boys contracts when they join the academy.
