Would like to hear you thoughts on William and Chol, as they seem likely to be taken with our later picks.

Also Marcus Adams, Understand he's a mature ager and you mightn't have seen that much of him thou.

Cheers

I was warmish on William after the Champs but I like it that he has continued to develop. I hope we pick him up.

Chol I really have no interest in. I don't think he will make it and if he is going to make it he needs to be taken outside his current peer group.

Adams has gotten a bit of attention lately but I have not seen anything of him personally. He is one of the guys who I will be looking at for one of the last few positions.

Hey Quigley, what is the likely scenario in your opinion if either Hipwood or Keays gets bid on say pick 5 or 6? Do we pass or match? If we match, does this make it almost impossible for the Lions to draft 1 or 2 of the other potentials. (ie. Wagner, William, Chol)
IMO, Cory Wagner is being dramatically under rated. His work rate is huge, his decision making is spot on, his disposals by hand and foot are fantastic & he tackles all day.

Wagner would be a bargain in the rookie draft IMO. From what I saw during the champs I'd like to develop him down back and use his footskills.

I take them even if there is a very high bid and if that results in us missing out on one or two of the lesser talents than so be it. You get the best talent you can in your side. We would already have comparable talents in our squad to the likes of William and Wagner competing for a top 25ish spot and I do not pass on a potential top 12 player for guys that could easily be replaced in the 22. Also I am looking at the guys coming through in the academy in the next couple of years and the competition for spots is only going to get greater.

I agree. I have him the third of our academy players off the board in the late second / early third round. I probably would not have him down back though. He lacks a bit of size and strength.

I really like draftees who have a strong finish to the season, particularly if they perform relatively well in senior company. William falls into this category for me.

William, I feel has the potential to become absolutely anything. I want that kid on our list. Chol is someone who I'm pretty certain we are going to be picking up, he also has potential to become a good ruckman. Not straight away by any means. I think the club will weigh up Chol vs an experienced back up ruckman.

The Marcus Adams that plays for West Perth? Haven't really seen much of him. So I can only go on what I've heard which isn't exactly a lot either. Only seen him once. Seemed a smart type with a knack for intercept marks. Can't add much more than that.

He's probably similar to Claye Beams but there are quite a few skinny and small forwards he could matchup on but may get exposed if he has to cover on a bigger forward.

Hey quigley if you have the time would love to hear about some of the future academy boys to get excited about. Especially seeing as it looks like we are going to try and pick mainly from the academy in the years to come.

Yep both of the two academy boy are exciting prospects, from the little I've seen of them. Would be happy to welcome both to the club.

A mate was talking Adams up the other day, and got me onto the video on the AFL Draft Machine (which he did look impressive, good marking and decent boot) but hadn't heard too much more about him.

Thanks for the reply, Quigley too

Williams? In three words- outstanding, eye-catching pace. This you can't buy every day, or every draft for that matter.

Chol? Don't know how long he has been in the game, but assuming it's about 5 minutes, then it's a brave forecast to say he isn't going to make it, from the admittedly very little I've seen.

Clayton- a likely type but played in a very ordinary team so not too difficult to stand out.

Just the far from expert opinion of a keen, occasional observer.

If your picking Chol, like most young ruckman he has a lot of flaws. You select them on what they could become in 5 years times. Like tall forwards, all you do is look for signs at the moment. And Chol has showed them.

Clayton who?

I'm not Quigley, but the only reason Brisbane would not match a bid for either Hipwood or Keayes is if Carlton bid for one of them at pick 1. We've already signaled that's what's going to happen by trading down to pick 38. If we pass on one of these 2 boys, the chances of picking up a decent player with the picks we have are very slim. Every club knows we're going to match the bids... but so far there seems to be an environment of other clubs ensuring fair value is paid - but no one is discussing screwing the academy clubs over. Maybe this changes in the future... but unlikely I think.

Surely Carlton (along with other clubs) wouldn't be stupid enough to play a trick like that. Screwing us over would most likely screw themselves over as like you stated would very much mean they get a player they did not desire. The risk factor is just so great with this system that it works out for all sides when teams don't pull jerk moves.

That's not how the Academy picks work.

If Hipwood and Keays both get bids around 5 and 6, all of our picks would move to the end of the draft, and our next year's first rounder would be pushed back to compensate. It's worth noting that we have enough for Keays and Hipwood at about 8 and 9, so it's really really unlikely that we'd run out of points. Even if one of them gets a top 10 bid, it's highly unlikely both would.

Even if that happened though, we would still be able to draft another academy boy - if William gets a bid in the 3rd round, and we don't have a 3rd rounder, we can still match, with our next year's 3rd rounder pushed back to compensate. We would absolutely have the choice to match the bid though, even if we don't have the picks this year.

Posters who continue to find ways to panic about missing out on Schache/Keays/Hipwood should receive an electric jolt from their PCs. There are three certainties in life: Death, taxes and the Lions netting the aforementioned draftees next week.

For those in the know how would you compare Hipwood to Ayce Cordy back in his draft year of 08? I seem to recall many describing Cordy as a skinny, athletic 200cm + type that had the traits to play anywhere on the ground once he matured. Admittedly I don't know anything of Hipwood other than what gets posted here, but the description of his attributes rang a few bells.

That doesn't sound right. I don't think you pick nor does the round determine where your points come from in the following year, I believe they come off your first, but will defer to others in the know.
