I think we can generally assume that all News Limited stuff needs to be taken with a grain of salt without needing a disclaimer each time.

Imagine working for such a terrible organisation!

Would be able to use a combination of the "hidden picks".

Kepe in mind that once we get to the fourth round though, we can match any bid with our last pick.

I got the answer from Quayle on Twitter.

Not that it applies to you this year, but Academy clubs are limited to matching a bid (for the final player on their list) with a single pick. Can't use a combo of picks. Which is interesting.

My understanding from reading that article is that that the available picks (and points) are dependent on your list spaces and this changes during as you fill spots during the draft.

For example (ignoring all shuffling of picks), Brisbane go into the draft with 5 list spots which gives us 5 picks: 2, 38, 39, 40 and 41 (42 is hidden).
We use pick 2 which leaves us with 4 list spots (38, 39, 40, 41).
Hipwood is bid on and subsequently matched with picks 38 and 40. Leaves us with three list spots and picks 40, 41 and opens up pick 42.
Keays is bid on and subsequently matched with picks 40 and 41. Leaves us with two list spots and picks 42 and opens up 76 (approximately).
We use pick 42 which leaves us with 1 list spot (pick 76).
Therefore we only have one pick (76) if we have to match a bid for an academy player with.

Could be completely off the mark with that.

Yes I think that's right.

So (made up example here) a team has one list spot left, and they get a bid at pick 30. They have picks 51 and 53 and 100 left. They can only use the points from 51 in matching the bid. 53 and 100 go un-used, and the team goes into deficit.

This scenario may be unlikely but that's how it would play out according to Quayle. Not relevant to you this year, but may be to a team one day.

Might be relevant for GWS though. They've got four spots available, and after Kennedy and Hopper there's a chance Himmelberg and someone like Flynn might get bids they need to match.

GWS are still operating with an expanded senior list, so they have 8 free list spots.

My mistake. I had thought 2016 was the last year of concessions, but in fact it's 2018.

It's weird, I have both dreams and nightmares about it... but I didn't get an NT News cadetship unfortunately.

Geez, Sam Landsberger has us getting Hipwood and Keays at 15 and 22.

Seems optimistic but that would be huge. If my maths is correct, we'd keep pick 42 and our pick 41 would be shuffled back.

This means we'd have Schache, Hipwood, Keays plus picks 42 & 55 to play with.

Would surely be enough to fill our other two senior spots with any other academy players we like (if not someone else). Pick 42 could match a bid as high as pick 32 and pick 55 could match a bid of pick 42.

Together they could match a bid of 24. Shame we don't have another high second round prospect. :P

*This doesn't factor in pick shuffling from other club academy selections obviously.

Wouldn't it be good if we could utilise this thought. And to think if we picked up a gun by pure luck. Now that would really tick Eddie off.

I'd think if there was any genuine risk of being caught out by this rule we'd be delisting players with a commitment to redraft them. There enough lack of talent on our list to manage the situation.

42 would end up about five or six spots higher, too.

An excellent chance that we'd be able to use that late second rounder, and have a pick capable of matching any bids on William or Wagner if we wanted.
I think you are on the money. A week or so ago I think I mentioned that the field would bunch near the straight, and this is happening, with many different scenarios being proposed, and a generally much higher regard for the talent...especially key position players...emerging. In this situation, I think it less likely clubs are going to stuff around nominating players whose bid is going to be comfortably covered. Also, with the talent base being regarded more positively now, our guys are slipping in most of the draft guides.

Keeping my lid on the Schache hype express but it's hard to not get excited.

I'm sure his old man would be proud, let's hope he has a long successful career at the Lions.

Is Callum Twomey reasonably reliable with his predictions or not? Someone care to fill me in cause im not exactly sure what his record is with phantom drafts is.

Probably more reliable then most phantom drafts I would suggest. Having said that I'm pretty sure this year will be one of the most difficult to get right in terms of predictions

OK thanks :). I'd like it if he's right though, get Hipwood and Keays at pick 12 and 21 and if im correct, not a pro, would leave enough points/picks to possibly snag 2 of Williams/Chol/Wagner.

Yeah if Keays goes as late as pick 21 our later picks will very much be available to match bids on Chol, Wagner or William if we want. Just depends on who the club values the most of those 3.
