what a bloody rollercoaster, jumped in around pick 30 while i was driving and realised hibberd, balic and bonner were still there and was very excited, one by one they all left and i let out a big eff you along the free way, pleasant surprise when mathison was still there.

would have loved to have got either of those three but mathison isnt the worst get (i realise im spelling his name wrong)

whats the go with Principal Skinner by the way?

Getting Mathieson gives us a bit more long term midfield insurance. As much as you don't want to look too far in advance, all our main midfielders are in the same age bracket and are now in the second half of their careers. We always knew Keays was heading our way but also picking up a guy who was pretty highly regarded among this year's group of midfielders is a really pleasant surprise and gives us midfield depth in that 18-21 age bracket.

As an overall comment about the draft, generally, once you get past the first 30 or so picks, things become a bit speculative. This time, there seemed to be more players available who were on most draft pundits' lists. It kinda puts pay to the arguments around depth. Sure, everyone might hold an opinion that there were only 30 decent prospects. But there is bound to be some divergence in opinion about who falls into that group.

If William and Chol were white, they both would be drafted. Fair to say that we need to see some Sudanese players make it at AFL level from the rookie draft before clubs will be willing to select them in the National draft.

I'm always fairly sceptical of those sorts of claims. But the amount of activity in the trade period made me think that clubs were actually on the same page this year. Guess not.

Lions recruiters here in Melbourne said exactly that and said immediately after the first round that both Mathieson and Skinner were high on our radar if still available.

As an aside the club rated Mathieson their 19th best prospect so a fair coup getting him where we did.

William will also be a Lion by Friday.

Maybe push it back to 3 great years, from 2013, of player drafting who we can almost assure we will retain for the future. If i remember correctly, 2013 was when we drafted the likes of McStay, Freeman and Taylor.

Mathieson interviewed extremely well with us, we certainly we're expecting him to be available. Leppa is a big fan. Loves a bit of a sledge so he'll certainly get along with Rocky and co.

Skinner was someone we thought we had a decent chance of landing. But to get both was seriously good.

Yeah, William will be with us. Chol looking like missing out.
