Schache, Hipwood, Keays, Mathieson, Skinner.
Offer that collection of players to any other club instead of their own selections and I reckon they would take it.
I know you're excited, but this is a bit much. I image Carlton, Essendon & GWS are all pretty happy with who they got!

By any definition, that is an absolute quality draft, especially given the solid trade period as well.
Our list is now better than it was this time last year or the year before.
This part I agree with... but given we really only "lost" Redden, Leuey and Aish, the in's were always going to outweigh the ins (there's a good reason we finished 17th). Every club is positive this time of year...

Having Had a chance to sleep on it, I am just as excited by this draft as I was last night. Not just because of the player we picked but because it suggest our back office knows what it is doing. My take-aways from the draft

- We got the three players we really wanted and two more that we were probably surprised were still there when we came to pick. That's a win.
- There will be the talk about Mathieson going home in two years, but I'd put him in the Lewy Taylor category. Here is a straightforward kid who was expected to go top 20 and watched as every team (apart from the cats) was happy to pass on him. Given our draft position and the academy boys we arguably grabbed him as soon as possible. I'm not so cynical as to think that will be forgotten.
- we didn't succumb to the temptation to only get Queenslanders. I'm not sure how much of a temptation it actually was. We didn't match for Wagner clearly because there were other players we thought provided better value, but to pass on that shows the club has faith both in teir assessment of talent and also in the systems in place to keep it (lambo). Backing ourselves.
- This draft was set up in trade week. I was bothered by having a plethora of mid/ late picks and thought the actual pick levels we got for Aish were unders, but clearly our back room guys, knew and understood the bidding system and used it beautifully. There was actually a point during the draft, when we basically got Hipwood for pick 38. and Keays for Pick 40 and only got downgraded from 41 to 47 for doing it (and then grabbed Mathieson), that I almost thought Eddie had a point. But then I remembered what we have put into those kids for years.
-Three academy players + 1 got drafted. At least one more may go by the end of the week, there is football talent in this town, it's still the frontier but that will help.

Head in sand?

Yep you're right.... Sorry.

We offered them a spot in the Lions Academy over a bunch of other prospects.....

Then invested countless hours into their development both on and off the field...

Then despite them being the absolute best option for our club at the picks we had..... we ignored them because they are black.

You're comment actually cheapens their efforts and journey..... And speaks horrible things about the people at the Lions.

Worst post I've read on BigFooty.

haven't read back through all the posts from last night so might have been answered. there was a bit of confusion re. our rookie draft spots available post last nights draft. can we still take william, chol and paine (as promised) in the rookie draft or not enough list spots left?

Keays bid incoming.

Who is this Aish you speak of as a loss :)

Well I think that we are covered for talls and inside mids for awhile. Looking forward (had been for awhile already knowing about our first three picks) we really do need to add players with two or more combinations of elite speed, outside run and kicking skills and also a ruck. Do really like Ben Ainsworth for that point of difference up front (plus he's Vic C) and obviously there's also Rolls and Allison. Was watching some vision last night and Petrovski-Seton just oodles class (few more cms would be nice). Just something to be aware of but Reiwoldt also played on the wing as a 17year old and then CHF as an 18 year old and he and Allison are similar heights. 193cms is damn tall for a mid that's all. Anyways let's enjoy this years recruits and hope that they get a game here or there.

think ainsworth and petrovski-seton are elite talents. lets hope we don't finish low enough on the ladder in 2016 to be in the running for them. allison also likely to be bid on reasonably high.

Was there much disappointment when Wagner was bid on?
Not really. We apparently rated him significantly below that bid, which is interesting given there's wasn't a "significant" amount of the draft to come. All night they'd been saying "one of William or Wagner" but I think the "one of" part was if William got nominated quite early instead of slipping right through.

We are going to have some trouble for sure in the coming years fitting all the young talls into our team. Ballenden who is rated highly as well and if Allison continues to grow he could be another.

Somewhat I think but it was hard to tell. Before the draft kicked off, they said we were hoping to get Schache, Hipwood, Keays and hopeful of a Mathieson, Skinner or another two names I can't remember with our fourth and either Wagner or William with our fifth.

I suspect the fact Mathieson was available, which one of the recruiters said after the first round was who he thought we'd go with with our fourth was on the money. As for Wagner, I can only guess that due to Skinner and someone else still being available, they rated higher but I've no doubt, had Skinner been taken prior, we would have matched North's bid.

Sounds to me that whilst the Lions rated Wagner pretty highly, and rightly so, they feel like Reuben has the greater upside despite being the riskier pick.

Anyway, I'll be hoping that Corey either carves out a good career at North or, preferably, does just that here after coming home in a few years.

So how did we get matheisons pick in trade week?

38 North Melbourne via the Bastinac trade (originally The Hawks)
39 Leuys compensation
40 North Melbourne via the Bastinac trade (originally Suckling compensation)
41 Carlton via the bell trade.
42 Our third ound selection.

Mathieson was selected with our original third rounder, pick 41 was push back to 46 when we matched Keays bid.

Woke up this morning and had to double check to make sure we did actually slay this draft.

And yep. We sure did. Massive win for us, at the very least 3 out of 5 of the kids drafted will have huge careers with us. The other 2 hopefully will as well!

The "significantly higher" in my post was meant to indicate somewhere in the 60s (at my estimate), so I don't think we rated him very highly at all. That and we didn't think we needed more outside midfielders, which probably also is part of the reason he may have been in the 60s.

Mathieson interviewed extremely well with us, we certainly we're expecting him to be available. Leppa is a big fan. Loves a bit of a sledge so he'll certainly get along with Rocky and co.

Skinner was someone we thought we had a decent chance of landing. But to get both was seriously good.

Yeah, William will be with us. Chol looking like missing out.

Good luck to Wagner too. Wish him well.

Please note that I meant that we did not expect Mathieson to be available at our pick.

Leppa has said a bunch of times that we have a really quiet group, and that we need to rectify that. I reckon he'd be well pleased to have picked up a couple of chirpy types in Keays and Mathieson.

Apart from Twomey we've hardly been noted at all. Frankly couldn't give a rats as we now who we've brought in and the quality of kids that they are.

I think there is an ambient level of anger that the academy clubs scooped up so many of the groupthink top-20 or so prospects (Mills, Hopper, Kennedy, Keays, Hipwood, potentially throw in Himmelberg as well). Our absence from those discussions may have something to do with that. I also think it's a good thing, otherwise we would be expecting massive reprisals and rule-changes next year.
