Acuguy has a decent point he's just going about it in a ******ed way. It's not racism though it's just different ethnicity's. E.g. Patty k coming from a big Greek family therefore more prone to homesickness. The Sudanese guys have shown to waver a bit in regards to application etc. I would be very surprised if recruiters don't think about these things, it isn't racism it's just how things are. No ones gonna jump down my throat if I claim that a guy we just drafted from a big Greek family is going to be more prone to homesickness. Seriously this PC crap has gotten absolutely insane lately. Not even allowed to have a discussion without people jumping down throats because someone somewheres feelings might have been a little hurt. Fully expecting to have my arseh*le torn a new one for this post.

No actually I personally think you articulated your point pretty well. But acuguy stating they Would have been drafted if they were white is pretty blatantly suggesting all 18 clubs have racist recruiting (edit - without himself being racist in anyway ). His follow up posts have not even come close to providing sufficient justification for his original point

I stand by original post, if William and Chol were from an anglo saxon background I think they both would have been drafted. Now I am not calling anyone racist, can't believe the tools who jumped to the conclusion and called me a racist. Surely they should be carded.

There was a time where indigenous players were not drafted due to the perceived cultural and behavioural issues. I feel we are going to need to have a number of Sudanese rookie listed players before clubs will confidently draft them.

I have seen racism from know it all white parents when picking Sudanese and African boys in teams. I also feel any of you who refer to Chol and William as project players are racist pigs. When was a white footballer last called a project player.
I'm dumber for reading that.

Well I'm agreeing with him that the background does matter. Just trying to put it in a manner in which people read the post instead of immediately seeing something controversial and firing up at the post without thinking hang on that's actually a reasonable point. And it honestly could mean the difference between a guy going in the national or rookie draft. I mean we see players and homesickness get talked about all the time. As well as aboriginal boys and substance abuse. The nationwide AFL clubs are racist is a bit ridiculous. But it is foolish to suggest clubs don't take into account ethnic background and track record of these groups of boys in there decision making.

Thanks. Found the answer here: http://www.afl.com.au/afl-hq/the-afl-explained/rookie-players - we have to have nominated them as Academy players for the national draft.

Hypothetical: can we delist existing rookies before Friday if we wanted to? Just thinking about Archie Smith v Mabior Chol? I'm guessing we persevere with Smith given he's two years into his development?
Speaking of ruckman, Are we a ruck short on our list...?? Martin, West(highly injury prone) and Smith (never played)... If Stef gets injured we could be into our 2nd and 3rd options pretty quick and they are hardly solid options, I would think our first rookie spot should go to best available ruckman.

Not 100% sold on giving Jackson Paine a rookie spot hasn't looked like it in 2 years... I know he has some talent , but might be just better suited to VFL level of footy. Thoughts??

I assume this draft was very good given the opinion of those 'in the know' (not me!).

I still find it a bit weird that some of these kids are being lauded as the panacea to our problems when really they're untried at this level. Not being pessimistic, i just hope people don't feel let down if some of these kids don't meet 'expectations'. Good luck to them all; onwards and upwards!

Given it would appear we are committed to William, I wouldn't be against letting Paine go in favour of another ruckman, but i suspect Paine may have a contract?

The problem is you clearly jumped to conclusion making the assumption that they weren't drafted because they are black...absolute stupid comment with SFA base or substance to back it up.

Did you not see Wagner not be matched with the Kangas bid? He was with Chol, Williams and Chol as late picks if Hipwood & Keays didnt cost the farm

And you clearly forgot to mention or understand how the draft turned out with some great talent unexpectedly sliding like Mathieson. Just curious do you even follow the under 18's?

Lions did very well in the draft and we can now choose to pick up either Williams or Chol if we wish, and I understand we are super keen on Williams

The whole project player dribble is just that... it is a very common term in the AFL over many many years during drafting... here you again make an arse of yourself. Go educate yourself a bit

Too much internet for you this week I think. Seriously mate you are way off the mark

well there is a way to get a point across... Im not sure suggesting they weren't drafted because they are black is ever going to end well...especially when anyone who remotely followed the draftees know we got lucky with Skinner & Mathieson sliding. Last time I check Williams and chol and available for us in the rookie draft... He needs to pull his head in and leave the race out of it

There may well be a point to be made here re: race. Not necessarily about our club, but about AFL clubs + their draft criteria in general. Acuguy just isn't capable of doing so.

If no one else wants Chol, can we offer him a position in our NEAFL side without having to list him as a rookie? He obviously can't play seniors and doesn't pull a rookie wage, but he's still in the Lions system and we can keep an eye on him and watch if he does develop. He's not going to play seniors next year regardless of being listed as rookie or not.

Or could we move Hammelman on in favour of a ruck, key fwds we are loaded on now, really can't see him playing senior footy at the moment.

if that happen would he be able to be a academy nomination next draft? Really if we like him we should rookie him now

Yep, agreed. I cannot see him playing for the seniors now, loaded up very nicely on our forwards with another highly rated one coming in 2 years as well.

Being a kpd is more than just height. Both of them are over 191. Just because you're tall doesn't mean you have the game style or attributes to play as a real kpd.[/QUOT
I dont see how Skinner will get a game personally. We have Clarke, Merret, Andrews and Hipwood as tall backmen.
skinner will play AFL, Merrett is close to finished , Clarke jury out , Hipwood could end up being better forward, the only lock for the next 10 years is Andrews at the moment , we need depth and we need to try new players, skinner will play minimum 8 games his first two seasons as he develops. I personally would have picked Hartley who went to Essendon, he could play 22 games this coming season if need be, ready made AFL body, mature age, can handle big fellas.

so how does the rookie draft work with the academy kids...do we get to nominate them?

We simply will be nominating William and he is ours as he is a nominated Lions Academy player. We only have one available list spot and William is that last player. No one else will be delisted, that simple.

I think the fact he is coming off an ACL injury means he won't play much this year if at all. He could step in for Merrett but I think he's a different type of tall defender to Andrews and Hipwood who are unlikely to play on a Cloke or Hawkins type forward.
