I think the club will cross the too many talls bridge when they come to it.

I definitely think we shouldn't bring in an average key forward like black as harvey shaw or butch could surprise us and be ready for games to at least a decent level.

I assume he's a Scott Welsh type.

Burton is a genuine forward that could play as the 2nd or third forward next to a big guy. 191/192 and sure hands.

Claims he aims to. I'm unsure. Certainly has the hands, aerial ability and marking but genuinely haven't seen him in the middle to judge. I look at how he plays forward and go he could be okay but I'm not sure he'd ever be a primary midfielder. Could be wrong though, if I'd actually seen him play through the middle I'd be able to give him a more accurate assessment but he's been more forward while in the system.

Would love absolutely either of these three and think that parish and Mathieson are bound to be 200 game afl players on,y a question of how good. Curnow I have no idea about but like the upside of him.

I'm a big fan of the players who have a long history of dominant games where they rack up lots of disposals.

Players who consistently rack up 25+ possies in juniors often translate well to afl as long as they don't have other glaring deficiencies. Which i have t heard about parish.

I haven't followed the draft prospects anywhere near as closely as usual this year.
Anybody that has care to give a run down of likely types for us.
I'd imagine we'd be after either a gun KPF or inside mid depending on where our pick is and who is left. Seems like the inside mids are mostly academy options, but seems to be a fair few KPFs around. Are they quality?

Does anyone know how recruiters plan for the draft? I had a dream last night about our recruiting team at this years draft getting caught out by another club picking who we wanted right before us. We blundered about not knowing what to do until Burgo blurted out "Jason Primus!", followed by a Kern facepalm. It got me thinking...

I would approach as follows:

A) Pre-prepared list of our top 100 or so prospects, ranked from most wanted to least wanted
B) Predefined list of needs with top prospects in these areas
C) Integrate where necessary

As the draft progresses, I would simply cross off players on my list as other teams pick them. When it came to my pick, the highest player on my list would be the one we pick. An example of this method being useful in practice would be in last years draft where Richmond picked McKenzie the pick before ours. It was reported that we fluffed around for a couple of minutes (inferring that we were about to pick McKenzie), before we crossed him off our list and picked palmer instead.

The predefined list of needs would come into play when we need a certain type of player and focus on that type over a best available type approach. The example in our recent drafting history would be last year, where we obviously had a list of talls and just picked off that list (Howard, Austin, McKenzie (until Richmond snaffled him), Palmer (not really a tall but not short either) and Frampton.

We had a similar type year in 2013 with speedy flankers with an aim to bolster the wings and back pocket areas (although obviously punctuated with the selection of the biggest, slowest reddest haired player on our list in Harvey - just pipping the Lobbester in this regard )

The final step would be to integrate the two, as I imagine would have occurred in 2009. We knew we had a driving need for a KPF, hence the hope against hope that the magic from maffra would slide to our pick 8. I reckon we would have had a list of KPFs that we would take at pick 8 (Butcher, Talia, Carlisle) and we would have taken the best one available at our pick. Once we picked one however we changed our strategy back to best available. The converse would be a list of players we would break our 'needs' style of recruiting for should they slip to one of our picks (A grundy type slide for example).

Intrigued to hear others thoughts on how this process should, or actually does, work?

I saw that and read the extract. In all honesty, pick number one is the least interesting pick to read about. (Oh no - do we go for a KPF who will have pressure on them to be Nick Riewoldt or do we pick a midfielder who will have slightly less pressure but is also lees likely t be the backbone of our team purely by dent of the fact he is not a KPF? Decisions.)

I'm far more interested in how recruiters weigh the needs of the list against the best available talent once we get a couple of rounds in - weighing up the belief that player x may be the next late draft steal ala robbie gray or hird against the fact that the team desperately needs a lock down defender and team y bloody nabbed the one we wanted two picks before ours...

Great, I can't wait to get this - loved her work with The Draft.

I reckon Elshaug's philosophy is spot on.

"What changed? The price you have to pay to get something that is very, very hard to find. You have to give up a lot, you have to pay them a lot and you basically have to say to the rest of the group, 'It's about this guy now, so you get a bit less, and you get a bit less, and we can't go and get this other player because this guy's getting most of the dough'. That's what you're saying. At the end of the day, we'd like to have a group of players coming through in every position, and that's how we'll build a team over time. But if you don't have a quality key forward it won't be 2018 when we're planning to play finals, it will be 2025. You've got to have at least one."

With speculation mounting that Jay Schulz will join Fremantle in October, the Power will want to add a key forward to its squad. The man widely tipped to fill that void is Gold Coast's Charlie Dixon – although his arrival could cause a few headaches in terms of how coach Ken Hinkley handles the balance of Dixon, Patrick Ryder and Matthew Lobbe. Hinkley has flagged a desire to add strong, inside midfielders to his side but would have been pleased by the emergence of Brendon Ah Chee late in the season. Set to finish just outside the top eight the Power could receive a top-10 pick, which might be needed to secure Dixon. Overall the club still has a relatively young, balanced list and drastic changes or needs aren't overly apparent. - Harry Thring

Cal Twomey says: If there's any benefit to dropping down the ladder like Port did this year it is in securing an earlier first-round pick. Sam Weideman and Harry McKay would be the clear candidates if the Power wants to add a young and developing tall forward to its list, but South Australian half-forward Wayne Milera has put together some great form at SANFL level recently. He might end up a top-10 pick.

Considering it looks like pick one is done in the Dixon deal, the second and third round picks become a little more interesting. It's a shame as I think Harry McKay would suit Port well as a hard running KPF who can pinch hit in the ruck.

I am not sure another KPP from that late in the draft is worthwhile pursuing, perhaps with the exception of Sam Skinner who did his knee and missed out on showing he was more than a late pick.

Clayton Oliver is a pure inside mid, who maybe worthwhile looking at. Not overly quick or fit, but gets good numbers.

Aidyn Johnson is a 184cm mid who is fast but has struggled with injury all year. Originally thought of as a top 30 pick, he may slide due to a lack of football.

Agius seems like an option too, elite kick with great forward smarts who hasn't had a great season. Question marks over his attitude, but I always think this is unfair considering these lads are 17-18 and often make great strides once they are in a good environment. Maybe available as a rookie or late pick.

Oleg Markov had a reasonable start to the championship but has dropped off the radar of late. Has incredible athleticism.

Add Jayden Brind and its a farely solid late list! This draft's depth will surprise quite a few!

I'll stand by Matthew Flynn from the GWS Academy in the same role currently 200cm but with a late birthday could get the extra 5cm most rucks seem to need now days, 95 kilos very agile a basket ball convert. There is a Kreuzer comparison by those who have watched him play and he does move packs. He's squeezed out of GWS bidding on him with the excess of talls currently on their list and the gws academy system is a terrific shopping ground for us.
