It is probably a bargain in isolation, but in the end the extra picks they use move to the back of the draft, so if they have 5 or 6 spots on their list to fill (for example) and they end up going great player + shit picks, are they better off than if they use the 2 or 3 second round picks they would have stockpiled in the trades?
That certainly is a good point, drafting with points will have to be a very exact science as if your one good draft pick is a bust then you are left with the dross that you picked up in the 60s and 70s. Although there are good very late picks like Swan and Gray, these are very few and far between. Brisbane are expected to effectively use two picks as they will draft Schache and then use their picks in the 30s for a bid on an academy player. They will of course have their other picks at the back of the draft after the bidding but they will be so late as to count for very little.
With the early quality of academy players and the shallowness of this years draft putting all your eggs in one basket could be your best option, but it could be a bad choice some years.

They could make a science fiction movie based on this plot. I've given up on it a long time ago.

What happened to KISS ?

They got old...

Nah, quite the opposite.
The new generation took over and forgot to keep it simple.
As we know they always get to the end part without doing any of the hard yards that must come first. :D

Or maybe keeping it simple got old
I have finally worked out why people are saying our first pick will go backwards.

Our first pick may well be the 38th or whatever player chosen BUT if we were to keep it simple and use the same criteria as in previous years and remove the academy and FS players whenever that team's first pick becomes available, then we will not picking the 32nd player available, but an earlier one.

i think the the word above bolded and underlined is the imperative one. Cos reality is the other players arent available to us.

Draft machines up and running tons of highlights available

After looking at the machine decided who im most keen on

1st pick: Johnson/Mutimer/White

2nd pick: Charlie Bance: who? Exactly; the type of guy we pick from left field. NSW/ACT boy who no one knows anything about. Build solidly at 184cms and 89 kgs. Had OP much of 2015 and Models his game on Wines and Kennedy (swans). Funnily enough he looks a bit like Ollie in his draft picture and has strong legs

In 2001 we had pick 15.
Using this new system it would be counted as 16 because if GAJ.

Yep, plus as GWS will be forced to use more than one pick on one player we'll move up.
In the past they would have used the two picks to pick up 2 players.

EDIT: Like Geelong did with Ablett and Bartell.

Under the points system they would not have been able to get both. Certainly if another team made a bid for Ablett at pick 1 they wouldn't as 3000 points would have been ascribed and even with the f/s discount they'd only have enough left for a late pick. Geelong would have to make up the points with their first and second and wouldn't have another pick till 40. Even if a team had not bid till as late as 5 Geelong could still have only matched it with their first pick instead of a combination of late picks and they could not have got Bartel as well at their 2nd round pick.

How far into debt would they have been allowed to go for the following season? They could have gone into a points debt that had to be paid back the following season, but with the fluidity of picks, on top of not knowing where you're going to finish... You could also trade extra players out for picks because of an accrued points debt, but that would be like an asset fire sale where buyers know you've got a fixed deadline to pay off creditors. The potential for off the book side agreements there is entertaining.

Here's a question about the draft. The Hawks at the moment have picks two first round picks, 15 and 18. According to the mock draft in "Inside Football" and probably a few others, they will be picks 18 and 22 when they are selected. Will these still both qualify as first round picks although 22 is technically in the second round? This may seem a pointless question, but part of the future draft picks legislation is that a team must have at least 2 first round picks in a four year period. With Hawthorn's usual predilection to trade their first-rounders, getting the requirement of two in four years out of the way as soon as possible could be very important for them.

I was having a look at the "Inside Football" mock draft. It has us bidding 37 for Harrison Himmelberg but GWS matching so we take Brandon White with 38. And then we bid 43 for Jock Cornell, GWS do not match and we take him. Next at 72(brought forward from 86 by bidding) it has us taking Nick Coughlan. I thought we were drafting two and upgrading Sam Gray?

I have a feeling that with our picks we're going after one the the GWS academy players Himmelberg or Cornell

Then we delisted Mitchell

They would have to count as first rounders.
Would have been much easier and simpler if the academy and FS was done prior to the draft. However this way it's more theatrical and the AFL loves comedy.
Whoops I meant to say drama. :)

On a slightly different note, does anyone else feel that this is the AFL's version of Big Footy's yearly trading quantity for quality posts. :D

Biemens not listed as resigning with the maggies today(yet)....possible rookie spot to sign with the power?

Does he have to resign from the maggies before being drafted?

Sam Gray was contracted to the Maggies when we rookie listed him.

They have to be under 23 when we first sign them but we can give them 1 year deals until they either leave or retire.

Masters listed as a contact maggies player-doesn't sound like he's going to be rookied :(

Hopefully he has a big 2016, I reckon he's a good chance to be rookied at the end of next season. Only 19 years old.

Does anyone know if we had any interest in Oleg Markov last year? Like did we interview him or anything? Big upside by all reports.
