If anyone is interested, SA vs Vic Country is about to start on Fox Footy. A lot of talent and big names in this game.
And a few big man child boys like Vic Country's Kieran Collins.

It will be interesting to see how long 20 minutes quarters go for in U/18 games. AFL games are stretching out to 32 minutes and only 3-4 goals kicked.

Edit Bugger me - no time on its straight 20 minutes. No wonder its only a 2 hour telecast and not 3 hours.

"The Anti density Rules" as Kevin Shifter Sheehan called them, for the U/18 championships might have to consider one or two of them for the main game.

* 5 forwards to play inside their half at all times

* No tagging/run with players whose sole purpose is to prevent an opposition player gaining possession

* No rolling zone or press is permitted at any time

* 5 forwards and defenders must re-set to their required starting position should they not be directly involved in the play

Shifter reckons they have been designed to spread the players out a bit, and in simple terms both sides 5 forwards and 5 defenders over half way and 2 each inside 50, spread out for tallent to shine, and have stronger bodies at this level to dominate, and want one on one contests instead of forward press.

Schache killing it.

McKay also looking very nice. Great great athlete, but showing a lot more composure than regularly and he's finally holding marks! So much upside.

SA getting dominated everywhere. Matthew Allen has looked alright up forward.

Gee I like McKay... Upside is through the roof.

If we could get a late first / early second, I'd be happy to draft best available mid with the first pick and McKay with the second.

Schache has kicked 6th - the 4th and 5th were gifts by the SA defence, but it is his kicking action that is impressive. a left footer without an arc and I cant think of anyone who had a more relaxed kicking action and ball drop. Plugger was a great kick but his kicking action was always that he would squeeze all of the air out of the ball and kick the shit out of the ball.

The first (modern?) key defender to go number 1?

First since Gaspar. But unless you were absolutely screaming for a key forward (like Brisbane), you'd have to go Weitering.

It feels like whichever team he went to, he'd then go "alright boys, now this is what we have to do to turn it around".

Good effort by SA - travelling team, outmatched in talent (especially in key position stocks) and only lost by 11.

If the draft was held now, you'd think:

1. Weitering
2. Schache
3. Francis

They're the standouts. The midfield order could really shake up. Partington didn't have a great showing - although I haven't rated him in the championships anyway, his games always seem to be like a Cotchin at his worst. Parish had a quiet one, although I still feel he's the best mid available (outside Callum Mills). Mathieson certainly did his draft stocks no harm - an excellent game.

I don't like the no tagging rule
Annoyed i was at work and missed it

How easy/difficult is it for the umps to enforce those rules?

What was mathisons disposal like? And when they say inside mid is he a body to body crashing inside mid or an inside mid that can pluck the ball from a contest and get the ball out of the stoppage ?

His disposal is neat when he has time - he's not a burst out of stoppage type really, more a Lachie Neale get the hard ball and get a clearance forward. But he's also got an outside game that I don't think gets talked about enough. Early on in that game, he looked more like Luke Partington than Luke Partington did!

So who would we pick if we had the first pick?

Couldn't understand the love affair with Parish last year. Had a lot of the ball but was never dominating, today hasn't really enthused me either.

Schache would be the sexy pick, Francis would be the high risk high reward pick (for our situation)... but I think we'd probably go Weitering. With the way we play being defence first. But because of our supposed key forward woes, Schache is just as much a chance, not that we'd play him to his strengths (he's dominated being a stay at home forward, which the Under 18 not only allows for, but encourages).

I really really like Parish. Just seems to know what to do in any situation. Can play off a half back, can play as a small forward, is an inside and outside mid. His versatility is great, although his talent was more present in the last game versus SA than it was in this one.
