I think we should be able to pick up a small forward reasonably late in the draft. Hisham Kerbatieh and Davin Ferreira look promising types.

What can you tell us about the midfield.foward crumber that will benefit port?

If we've already got enough AFL capable ruckmen on our list to cover our needs, wasting an additional spot for the sole purpose of a guy to play reserves is not a smart move.

I don't know a lot about Kerbatieh but he fills a need on our list. He trained for a week with Richmond as part of a Bacharach Houli award. I liked his highlights reel. I particularly liked that he took a knock and got straight back up. He has a powerful kick, looks like he enjoys kicking a goal and has some vision, evasiveness and creativity. He looks like he has plenty to work with and would fill a hole on our list.

Found my favourites for this year;
bonner: Burgoyne type so efficient and silky with his kicks. Unfortunately we probably won't have a pick in his range
hinchliffe: Sam Mitchell like inside midfielder. Has a strong left boot on him with real punch and penetration. Good vision, roughly same height and from wa - 179cms 81kgs. Gasses a bit needs to work on his endurance and running - burgo should help with that
parsons: Pretty good speed, good size and one of the best kicks in the draft. Played some senior footy with the box hill hawks a while back. Ready to go from year 1 good build aswell 189 cms 75 kg.
Then of course the regular ah chee and tahana.

Bonner I like. Elite kicks are always worth while. Parsons has some elite traits and not elite traits. That's worth a shot. Especially with people here being keen on a long kicking outside runner.

It's always interesting to see how draftees develop between 15 and 18. I played with Riley Bonner for quite a few years (up until 2012), and he was always reasonably good without standing out. I don't recall him making any association teams back when I was playing.

He was always quick and keen to use both feet (kicking accuracy has improved out of sight, in the footage from the U18 Championships). Used to be very small, and limited to either the HFF or the pocket, partly due to his height but also because he completely lacked a defensive side to his game. Obviously he shot up over the past couple of years, as he's now listed as being 191cm and 80kg.

Looks like he'll probably go somewhere after our first pick (which I'm assuming we'll trade), but before our second pick.

On a side note, whoever gets riley bonner will have a player on their hands. If only we did a trade such as moore and our third for the saints second he could possibly be in reach.10/11 there would be better players available according to needs but for pure skill can't go past bonner

Ask Daniel Rioli to describe the best possible Saturday. He won't need to think for very long, or make any of it up.

This time last week the teenager got to run around on the MCG on grand final day, picked to play for the under-18 Allies side that took on the new AFL Academy crop in the curtain-raiser.

Daniel Rioli again. Good in the Clean Hands competition on day 2 of the combine good in the 20 metres sprint and backing it up with winning the 6 back to back 30 metres sprints.

They beat Eastern Ranges utility Liam Jeffs and Northern Territory speedster Daniel Rioli, who both ran 2.89 seconds for the sprint.

Rioli, whose father is a cousin of Hawthorn premiership star Cyril Rioli, has enhanced his draft position in the past week after performing well for the Allies in the Grand Final morning curtain-raiser.

The 18-year-old won the repeat sprint test on Saturday, running 24.15 seconds for the six back-to-back 30m sprints.

The return to fitness of Ryan Burton was also promising for recruiters. After 14 months out with a severe leg injury, Burton ran confidently at the combine and did well given his circumstances. Before the injury he was considered one of the most talented players of this pool – that hasn't changed. He will be a player recruiting teams spend many hours mulling over.

It's interesting that Rioli test results were elite and that Burton was running well. Both of them could be in the mix for Port.

Burton is a worry. The Crows will end up with two picks before us. It's likely to be hard to get him past their second pick.

If, as expected we enter the draft at #29 then we are pretty much in the hit or miss section of the draft. Going back over previous drafts the (very)general rule has been that once you get to #29 there will be one enduring draftee in every 5-10. Some years it will be worse, some years such as 2001 there may still be quite a few good picks(Mitchell, Montagna, Swan) coming out late.
In the 2009 draft a lot of the better players were taken at 20-30, so there is no reason we cannot pick up a good player with our pick.

True, we're a bit better at drafting than we were but I'm just looking at what's gone before, even Hawthorn have had howlers with 30+ picks. Although they've also taken some doozies, Sam Mitchell at #36 comes to mind. And we have of course had Dom Cassisi at #50, Robbie Gray at #55 and Justin Westhoff at #82.
