Can we draft him? Stick him at full-forward and just get him to scowl at the opposition defenders.

Golby's highlights look good but if Brisbane have delisted him it's not exactly a glowing endorsement. Does have a excellent left leg though.

Paige Cardona phantom draft has Port taking Will Snelling and Stephen Tahana.

I'm interested in both. Not sure we have a need for a 176cm Snelling but if he's there at one of our picks then he'd be hard to overlook. Really hope we snag Tahana. Good size, goot attributes, good skills. Neat player.

With 3 spots on the rookie list and Mitchell a target for 1 spot that leaves 2 spots for 2 18 year olds.

I suspect we will draft a key defender and a ruckman with those spots.

e.g.

Sam Skinner (VIC – KPP)
Height: 197cm, Weight: 96kg, DOB: 29/06/1997
Recruited from: Gippsland Power
Range: 15-rookie
Profile: Promising key position player who missed much of this season hurt.

Luke Surman (196cm, 97kg defender from Norwood)

Surman will be a great player to have on the rookie list, being such a strong and raw tall defender. He's primarily played basketball before this year, but his development as a player has been quite rapid. Smart defender, reminds me a bit of Heath Grundy. Brenton Phillips thinks he'll be an imposing player once he starts to play to his 97kg frame, and it's hard to argue with that.

Andre Parrella (21/9/1997. 203cm, 104kg. Sturt)

AFL biography: Tennis convert at 203cm, displays great touch and understanding as a ruckman and how to position his body in ruck contests. Averaged 28.8 hitouts at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, with many being to the advantage of his team mates.

"He's probably the best ruckman in our group. He's got a really good work ethic, he listens and he wants to learn. He's not scared to get in the weights room and throw the weights around. I thought his ruck work and his hit to advantage stuff was really good this year."
Brenton Phillips, SA talent manager

Dylan Smith (7/2/1997. 198cm, 81kg. Swan Districts)
Tall defender/forward

AFL biography: Key position player with elite speed for a player of his size. Displays many quality traits to make him an AFL prospect, including his clean hands and marking ability. Had a standout performance against South Australia in game one, collecting 18 possessions and taking eight marks. Averaged 8.2 possessions and four marks in six games at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.

"Dylan's very rare: a kid at 198cm who can play both ends as a key position player. I would suggest his personality isn't a look-at-me-type person. He's a quiet sort of kid, so I see him more in the backline, but he can play as a forward as well. He has good size, speed, endurance and when he's on with his contested game he's very hard to beat. He's a diligent worker and only entered the game at 13, through some friends at school. He's not really from a football background at all."
Raff Guadagnino, WA talent manager

Only going on 5 min of vision, but Tahana seems to get it ok but looks scrappy with his skills. His handballs go from AhChee-like with their depth and weighting to completely indiscriminate. His kicking looks timid in that footage.
Looks like there's a bit to work with but a few holes in his game. I guess that's what you expect drafting from pick 32 down.

From Paige Cardona phantom draft

39: Port Adelaide – Will Snelling
Height: 176cm, Weight: 75kg, DOB: 06/08/1997
Recruited from: West Adelaide
Draft Range: 30-50

Productive small midfielder who has stood up at league level in the SANFL this year. Finds the ball easily and uses it efficiently around the field and going inside 50. Covers ground with ease and is regarded as a two-way runner. Isn’t bullied out of a contest, having prided himself on his contested game, and provided a few eye-catching moments as an extractor for West Adelaide.

I noticed him in the U/18 championships and made some comments in one of the threads here that he looks good but lamented his lack of height given how many small guys we had on our list that werent performing. But geez he was impressive in the Sanfl finals especially the GF and having watched Sammy Gray turn it around, and Ah Chee stepped up as a big bodied mid, I wouldnt be upset if our recruiters drafted him. Like Sammy he is a natural footballer and natural midfielder.

A lot to like there! At times off with his disposal efficiency, but could see him playing AFL at some point.

Yeah but rookie draft?
scottjr thinks we should trade Hartlett to make room for him. :D
I'm only half kidding. Port would love to get him A grade kid in every sense. Maybe we can combine next years first pick with the following years as mooted with the Saints this year for pick 5?

I reckon we could do better than Snelling

At that point in the draft it may be difficult to do so. We either get snelling/lovell types or tall skinny lanky types that should take a while to develop but may debut in their first year as bailey dale had. These players hewett. Jeffs and greg clark. Alternatively we could turn to mature aged players but on revaluation it would just stunt the growth of gray and ah chee so picking someone like menegola up would be good as a rookie so we have a break glass in case of emergency player.

Yeah me too. Half kidding that is. :D

How'd he go at the Roosters? Fairly sure he got to play some games in the ones.

Wouldn't mind taking a punt on Snelling. If he can figure out how to translate his game at AFL level, he could be another Lachie Neale or Sam Gray.

Even though we might not have a glaring need for him, I really hope we grab Jordan Dawson with our second pick. He's a ball of potential waiting to happen. No one is really talking about him in the phantom drafts. 190cm forward with X factor. I'll be surprised if he isn't drafted, yet only Skippos has him in his phantom draft.

In those phantoms, Nick O'Kearney is falling rapidly and I have no idea why. If he's there at our first pick, that's who I want.

Just on this word out of Westies during the year is that Freo have taken a fancy to Snelling. Works bloody hard, wasn't overawed by SANFL finals and I'm sure I overheard at Westies game that he has been doing a lot of work to be able to kick well with both feet. Feel like he is the sort of player you get at our picks.

I enjoy your insights mate

Wouldn't mind seeing your phantom draft ;)

O'Kearney would be one i'd be happy to get with our first pick. Alex Morgan another. Aidyn Johnson, Stephen Tahana the 2 more obvious choices but we rarely go obvious.

Honestly wouldnt surprise me if we bid on Harry Himmelberg with our first pick.

Alex Morgan is a jet, he carved up in the Under 18s with his composure and skills yet he's only really started to jump up the boards later in the season. I can see him becoming a Kade Simpson type.
