I have said a few times that our overall structure is good. Unlike a lot of clubs, we do have both quality and depth at the key forward and key defender positions.

We do need another gut runner or two to cover the ground and spread (have a look at how often we get little or nor movement up the ground when we have a kick-in/mark/free kick deep in defence). But they might be on the list already and just have not put the work in yet to get like that. A young ruckman project would be on the agenda if Zac leaves.

But at this stage, the thing we most need is better players. It sounds simple but health plus 4 or 5 upgrades around the ground (either new players or internal improvement) and we can be very good. Which is why I am less worried about where we pick so long as the player we pick is an upgrade in the next 2 -3 years. We don't absolutely need an upgrade in any particular place but we do need better players.

I agree with others that we need a ruck backup. We won't be contending with Harbs or Shawry in the team either. More young talent that can kick.

Id prefer Harbs in the forward half then back half. In the back 50 his kicks turn the ball over..
In the forward half he runs and kicks long into the 50

So who do we take at #3 given Schache and Weitering will most likely go #1 and #2?

Francis? Parish? Wouldn't be displeased with either but is there anyone else who might be better for us?

Sam Weideman & Ryan Burton both key forwards and without their injuries would be spoken about more and would be top 10's.
Parish 24 possessions against Dylan Buckley, Armfield, Andrew Walker earlier this year despite breaking his hand early in the 1st qtr. Slight frame. Returned with game high 22 against Werribee up against Nth players Leigh Adams, O'Shea, Harper, Tarrant etc.
No real stand out at 3, depends on what you need.
Parish / Francis?

No

chance of getting him now, last night was excactly what I didn't want to see, we had to either smash them or lose. A piss weak win that costs us pick 2 is hard to swallow
If Carlton win this week we move back to 17th. It would then come down to our games against Essendon & Port.

A big bodied 191cm midfielder like Aaron Francis would help replenish any A grade midfield talent we may lose over the coming years?

All depends how they interview I guess and being prepared to move interstate.

I'm always wary of South Australian lads & the go home factor for some reason?

I agree
I think the S.A clubs chase hardest to get there homegrown talent back where they think it belongs..

Im just worried Francis could be another McKenzie..
Francis isnt really a classfied as a midfielder at all, played the odd game there, but you wouldnt draft him thinking he'll be a gun Josh Kennedy.. Because fair chance you'll be let down.
Probably more of a Ben Reid/harry Taylor/Roughead swingman maybe slightly more agile

Starting to think we are OK for midfielders now and it isn't a huge need. Looking at the list on paper although we could always use more it is starting to look pretty decent:

Center square

A team:

Ablett, Prestia, Swallow

B team:

Rischatelli, Miller, Hall

C team:

Lonergan, Hallahan, Stanley

Wings/Flankers

A team:

HBFs: Malceski & Kolo
Wings: Bennell & O'Meara (with 2 knee injuries in last 12 months keep him out on the wing next year)
HFFs: Garlett & Martin

B team:

HBFs: Harbrow & McKenzie
Wings: Shaw & Glenn
HFFs: Sexton & Boston/Hall/Stanley

Knightmare in his thread saying Charlie Curnow and Francis are fighting for that 3rd best player.

Curnow stands 191 and 95kg as a Powerful mid/forward
Disslocated his knee earlier this year and hasnt played since
If Curnow can play the 3rd tall then he probably suits us down to the ground from a needs basis.

Thinking if we want him at #3 we could then have a crack at his brother Ed, the quintessential B grader, to make sure he feels right at home at the Suns and reduce the flight risk. Averaging 21 touches last 2 years, 26 next year, elite fitness, can tag (Carlton have got too many taggers), and possibly convert him to a lock down back pocket with his propensity for tagging. Surely he would jump at the chance to play with his brother and a club on the verge of success.

If we were only going to use our first 2 picks on draftees I would be confident our pick 2nd rounder would be more than enough to get the job done (maybe they could send us a 2016 3rd rounder as well), or else they can have McKenzie.
