Sorry, a phantom draft has to take a stab at where the bidding for academy players will come. It is not a phantom otherwise.

GWS has pick 10. If there is a bid before then, that pick moves, the mock draft changes.

Don't like or understand the new bidding system, I suggest not looking at phantom or mock drafts and stick to power rankings instead.
I completely understand how it works - I just don't like it. Pick 3 is pick 3. Four picks in the mid to late 20s shouldn't be pick 3.

Get it?

The system is what it is.
My comment was about mock drafts. Don't like seeing Mills or Hopper at pick 3, don't read mock drafts.

We will like it more next year if have a couple of players that we can get at a discount. Which is what the 4 picks equaling pick 3 means. Getting a higher rated player at a discount.

Phantom drafts really shit me when they include academy players in the first round when everybody knows that nobody is going to nab them except their own club. Keep them out of the ******* list.

I very much doubt that we'll be taking Wiedeman either.
I suggest you dont watch the real draft.

Knightmare's mock draft is the best I've seen as he has gone to the trouble of suggesting where the bids will come in for players and adjusting the picks accordingly.

Although I don't like his picks for us - taking Milera when Curnow is still on the board at 6, or taking Bonner when Hibberd and Oliver are still on the board at 16

On Milera, got this from a friend who knows his stuff about drafts and recruiting in general.
Wayne Milera - Shaun Burgoyne eat your heart out. wow if only this kid racked up huge numbers, wow if only Shaun Burgoyne racked up big numbers. Looks like a skinny kid that would blow over in the wind but has toughness and physical presence of players a lot bigger than him. Can hit the ball with real speed and collect it cleanly, quick hands to dispose of the ball or a very accurate kick. The most skilful kid in this draft. Very good pace mixed with an incredible ability to stop and baulk makes him very hard to apply pressure on him. Even with all this he normally just takes the basic option rather than always trying to create. Have fun manning up on him because if you are not good in the air he will carve you up, at ground level he can swoop on a loose ball and get rid of it or be away before you really know what has happened. If you are after a high forward who can pinch hit in the middle this boy is your man. If he gets the ball 15 times in a game you know you are in trouble. No problems finding target inside 50, has that competitive instinct and agility and strength to get to the right position even when he is out positioned. One of the few in this draft who can truly become elite. The engine is the query and his ability to push himself hard to cover the big yards. The first non KPP or genuine mid to go in this draft. As high as 5 if that is what you need. Dale Thomas like with a bullet between now and draft time
The Burgoyne comparison is a very good one.

Yeah sure Wayne's mum ;)
Ha - nope! You'll just have to believe me. Comes from a person with a heap of knowledge about it. This person wouldn't (and doesn't) hesitate to turn up the heat on shit players. Not a Paige-clone where they are all faultless.

Cal Twomey on his podcast said that a few clubs had Milera as a top 5 pick this year. So there must be something there. Importantly, they must think his skills will translate really well to the AFL level. Some players impact the game in the same way when they go up a level. Get 20 touches with impact at junior level, get 20 touches with impact in the AFL.

We all think Clayton had a couple of players in mind who would be there at 6 and have just as much potential as Parrish or Francis at pick 3. Can't wait to see who it is, or who slides for some reason like 2MP last year.

If he ends up a Burgoyne clone (either one), I'm sold ;) From what I saw, I tend to agree with KM's assessment of his weaknesses - lacks line breaking, straight-line pace, and size/strength. Still if he has good disposal and can deliver the ball to our forwards with something better than what they are accustomed to, which seemed apparent from the footage, he'll improve our team. Still yet to be convinced. Someone said he just doesn't look like a high end top 6 type draftee, not an absolute gun. thats the impression I get too.

Personally with a pick as early as 6
And probably our last inside the top 10 for the next 5 years...

I wouldn't really want to use it on a skinny whippet quick skillful kid who likes to evade traffic

Rather use it on a KPP like Francis who can mark and intercept everything even push forward or another Tall forward option or
a dominate brut of a midfielder who pushes his way through tacklers

Twomey did also say in the podcast that he thought the talls in this draft were better than next years talls, with next years mids superior to this years. Might be our last chance for a while to grab a highly rated tall?

At 6 - Francis, , Weideman or Curnow - in that order of priority.
We can get one of these three - no Milera thanks,..

Top picks for next year to get with Demons pick (disclaimer: based on what I read I am not a recruiter)

Will Brodie - 190cm inside/outside mid who can play forward
Sam Petrevski-Seton - silky smooth wing - like a Harley Bennell (without the issues)
Jarrod Berry - absolute physical specimen - think James Frawley build with the skills to play back flank or wing
Jonty Scharenberg - tall inside mid
Ben Ainsworth - 178cm - specialist forward pocket (think a rich man's jamie elliott) who will hopefully move into midfield

Note no key forwards or backs so good idea to get one this year

Add a couple of pretty good home grown midfielders as well ..... it has to be talls this draft !

Sportsbet unders/overs has the bottom three as

18. Carlton +4.5
17. Brisbane +5
16. Melbourne +7

Here's to hoping they're right and we get picks 3 and our own 18 in the first round next year ;)

Really liked Brooksby's competitiveness despite being on the short side for a ruck and also think he could provide more than nuisance value if needed up forward.

Brooksby has really taken advantage of his opportunities, considering we drafted him to give us a mature ruck in the NEAFL. Will be interesting to see who out of him and Currie Rocket prefers as backup. I assume Currie, but good depth.

Will be bloody handy having Brooksby on the senior list as a back up big bodied fwd if Lynch gets injured or Wright/Day don't perform consistently.

He could very well push Day out of the best 22 next season as our preferred fwd/ruck.

And if we do recruit Jarrad Grant on the cheap, it gives us a few different fwd set ups to see which clicks best.
