On Knightmare, is it just me, or whenever there's a whisper of Richmond rating a junior, he goes off them completely? He didn't rate Vlastuin, didn't rate Lennon, didn't rate C Ellis, and this was leading up to the draft when it was strongly rumoured that we'd take them. Now I look at his latest update, and he has us taking Ah Chee, who he's chucked down to #45 in his power rankings! I mean seriously. The guy must have some serious bias against our recruiting.

No, it's just that he's a dud. Archie at 45 is definitive proof (again).

LOl who gives a crap about his power rankings, I just look at his phantom to see the height, weight of the players and also see who he jas lined up to which club , The funny thing is that he seems to change it depending on the rumour where as i would have more respect if he did his phantom and left it as is as his opinion rather than chop and change

In order of preference at this stage (assuming Oliver is already gone, even then though I'm not sure where he sits):

  1. Ryan Burton.
  2. Rhys Mathieson.
  3. Ben McKay
  4. Callum Ah Chee.

Burton:
  • Like him the most on the basis there is at least an 80% chance he will recover from the broken leg.
  • Most talented player likely to be available come draft night.
  • Doesn't necessarily fill a need but would make a potentially excellent third with the possibility of eventually playing some midfield minutes.
Mathieson:
  • Rated him higher at the beginning on the year and have somewhat cooled on him.
  • Is a strange player as he rarely looks in control and to be frank doesn't look at all like an AFL footballer, but last year especially he showcased the ability to find/win the football and give him to his teammates on the outside.
  • Kicking is a bit hit and miss.
  • Strong overhead.
  • Good hands.
  • Average athlete.
  • Hard to go wrong with Mathieson but at the same time he doesn't scream pick me, regardless any club would be lucky/grateful to have him.
Ben McKay:
  • Admittedly have seen bugger all footage of McKay, but in the limited I have seen, I really like as a prospect at both ends of the ground. As a forward he reminds me of Tom Lynch with his set shot needing improvement. As a defender I don't have a like for like comparison but his aggressiveness and strength in the contest really stands out.
  • Strong overhead and uses his body well in the contest.
  • Kicking needs improvement but shouldn't take a lot of work.
  • Youngest prospect in the draft (key factor). Really think his lack of experience and exposure to prior to this year will result in huge improvements across the board once Ben enters the AFL system.
Ah Chee:
  • Personally don't find him all that exciting, with the exception of the odd high flying mark. Sure he makes an impact with his disposals but not in the way I would normally picture someone of his physique and background.
  • He's quick but I wouldn't say he is line breaker or game breaker and whilst he is nimble, he isn't as nimble as most small forwards in the league.
  • He's very strong overhead for someone of his size and has good awareness.
  • Kicking is very accurate and is capable of pin point passes.
  • Not sure what he is at the next level, eg. small forward, half forward, wingman, rebounding defender?

Q for those who watch these things more closely, or who have better powers of perception:

What's a sign(s) that an underage inside mid, especially one who is more physically developed like Oliver, who's beaten up on others at TAC Cup level, will have a lower ceiling? I sense plenty go well at juniors, but fail to translate. Arnot was no star, but he's an example. Many highly regarded and honoured (at junior level) insiders go by the wayside once the others catch up (Bulldogs had a Morrish medal winner I think - keg on legs - who was picked late and then found out at senior level).

I like the urgency seen in Oliver's tape, but wasn't he playing against weaker/ diluted TAC Cup teams during the Champs, perhaps inflating his numbers?

What suggests Oliver will go to the next level and not just do well when he first hits AFL (different player, but ala Daniel Rich) due to size & physicality, then plateau or regress? It's great that he models his game on Rockliff and that Carlton rising star runner-up (legit forgot his name for this minute and because he's Carlton I'm not even going to try to look up the knob's name), but both those guys are hard at it, with so-so disposal. A worry?

Devil's advocate stuff - I'm not slotting him. Cheers in advance

Ha Ha, Arnott was lucky to be drafted at all!

Steele is okay but way overrated IMO.

I am not saying Steele will not be a player but some are blowing their loads way way prematurely IMO.

Steele just seems to be a hard tough player to me atm and not necessarily anything special

From memory he rated our young McKenzie inside the top 30.

I don't think he's very astute, but he's good for a sketch and his efforts should be appreciated.

Couldn't be more bias. There are 7 Lollingwood players in his top 50 from 2010 - 2014 ahead Miles, Flossy and B Ellis who didn't make it. In last year's draft rated McKenzie as a first rounder. I am sure his rating would dropped as soon as we picked him.

Must be envy because we are the number one supported club now.

How do you know he is going to leave after 2 years?
As I have explained flea his family is extremely close and crave being together . He is all offensive and IMO those types tend not to adjust well to defensive structures required at AFL level .
I don't know it is merely a gut feel I guess and to me he is very much a type we have abundance of and as such may be behind plenty of others .
I am a lot like toadvine in that I am not sure what role he could play at AFL level . He is physically not ready and is unlikely to be for 2 years which I think is likely to see him feel he is being starved of opportunity and head home .

Anyway, Mathieson's Draft Machine package is a bit more impressive than Skippos' youtube montage. I'm starting to really like him, he'd be a solid addition no doubt.
Agree. He shows a few more virtues in that Draft Machine set of clips, particularly his overhead marking.

Nice interview up on AFL.com.au with him today as well. You can tell this kid has a bit of fire in the belly, no doubt about it.

Wouldn't be disappointed if we picked him. With a bit of polish could be a gun.
I remember hearing a recruiter (cant remember who) say if hes in the middle he will get first hands on it and the clearance. Thats a lock he just always gets the first touch

Knightmare's player comparisons make them all sound hopeless tbh. One poor draftee got called a poor man's Matthew Broadbent.
Watch them become superstars when they join Collingwood though. Why people hang off his every word is beyond me. He's a f***ing muppet.
