Will Bennell be the missing link for freo to deliver their first flag?

  • Gilbert Gardiner...
could do... Pav still holds the key I reckon... no cover if he was to go down

If we dont land McCarthy - I think we will - what are our options re KPPs.

Black and Casboult are required it seems and not sure about Kersten. Top end talent like Weitering and Collins will be well gone before our pick 22ish.

We would probably have to look at mature agers like Grimley, Hartley and even Jack Fitzpatrick who Hawks are looking at.

Locally there is not much. Dylan Smith is likely but will take several years to develop. Greg Clark is 193cm so he could be developed as a kpp although only ever heard of him as a mid. Our whole season next year could depend on Apeness and Taberner stepping up. I will not be holding my breath.

The option is there of course to play Fyfe at CHF.

I'm a firm believer that adding talent should be done at the top of the list, rather than bolstering the bottom. We got a potential steal by slotting Bennell in at number 1/2/3 and now our depth just got better.

I think Harley could become our highest impact player. Like Deledio before the media were over Cotchin and realised why Deledio was getting tagged before him.
We have an elite list for sure, but what gets us into trouble is our bottom 5. It is no where near say the bottom 5 of Hawthorn. That how they have managed to win premierships. Granted they have Mitchell, Hodge, Rioli, Roughead. But players like Duryea, Stratton, Shiels, Puopolo, Smith and Schoenmakers all contribute.
It's handy to trade in solid players to limit having a weak bottom 5-6 players.

We don't try to develop will never know, who will think fyfe will be from skinny kid to Brownlow and morabito long term injuries, pitt got heart issue.

One of the McKay boys might be a chance in the draft, but we would need Pav to stay for one more or for Tabs or Apeness to compete.

I agree. I just think that adding stars makes average players around them into good players.

Bradley Hill at Hawthorn is very average when he isn't having his hard running rewarded with guided missile kicks he doesn't have to break step to mark.

What about the delisted free agents?
  • Mason Shaw
  • Spencer White
  • Sam Grimley
  • Rowen Powell
  • Mitch Harvey
...etc.
There were some whispers a while back that Freo were sniffing around Spencer White. Not sure if that is still the case or if it ever was. Moist Biscuit said Harvey is 'fat and slow' Not exactly a ringing endorsement oh and a superfooty guy reckons Grimley is a lazy sod or something like that.

with our treatment regarding tab , i think if hawthorn treat shoemakers the same he is long gone. The biggest problem we have is when come to young player tab,a.pearce we are inpatient , also inflexible with putting young player into playing suban ,d.pearce position. when player retire or delisted we panic in trade if we cannot get it done. Rather look for way to improve weakness in our player we wanted quite fix, if not happening umpire , afl treatment of other team.

Hmm... Well, I reckon if we can't get a forward via trade, then it's a good backup to get one of these guys for free. Also... Arryn Siposs is DFA too. Thought he was a decent player at the Saints.

When you are in a premiership window then you are impatient. Hawthorn don't give extended runs to inexperienced, under-performing players do they? Our weakness is the forward line and that weakness is we don't have any on the roster.

Terry Wallace made a very good point about McStay at Brisbane. He said something along the lines of 'when you put the oppositions best defender on a young up and coming forward, it just kills them, the kid can seriously play.' If we don't grab McCarthy, Tabs might improve next year, but if he cops the best defender it's going to be incredibly unfair on him.

Rare time the List Mismanager is on the money, that McStay kid is a gem.

FWIW I would rookie Shaw and Spencer White, regardless of McCarthy outcome. If there is no McCarthy, then the best preseason of those two could get an immediate upgrade.

Agree, although the same can be said about adding McArthey, how will getting the No 1 defender affect his development? If Pav stays on, that helps obviously

No. The biggest problem with our young KPP players, is they haven't been much chop (AP aside)

As delisted free agents we can sign them up to our main list without going through the drafts. Unless you think no-one else will nab them, of course?

So are we in the premiership window, Harley could be the difference but need to change things up to be in premiership window. Our midfield will have to kick more goals or Fyfe has to play more forward.
