Roberton has been very good for the Saints, one of their better players in fact. Whether he'd have been best 22 ahead of MJ/Ibbo etc is another story. I don't think he would now just as I didn't think he would back when he left us. No shame in any of that though, we're 1st and competing for the flag while the Saints are in a pack jostling to avoid (or attain if you prefer, Melbourne, Carlton fans) the bottom 4. I think he's good enough for the big league anyway.

Not saying he shouldn't be getting a game for the saints, just saying he is fairly average. Average is absolutely AFL level, but again I don't think we've missed the bloke.

Don't remember one game of his to be frank, can't think of any game I've seen where he has done anything that caught my eye. Admittedly I haven't watched a great deal of the Saints this year. Better player in an ordinary side is still pretty ordinary IMO.

I feel like he left with our blessings at the time, we didn't exactly try to stop him did we?

It was more directed at Latro who in typically blunt fashion straight up called him a hack. It's funny because on the few times I've seen the Saints in the last few years he's been pretty decent. I've noticed he plays more within himself these days as you'd expect as a player matures and understands their game better. I always had an issue with how loopy his kicks were, they'd take longer to reach their target than Garrick Ibbotson takes assessing the situation coming out of defence- a bloody eternity. He's mostly cut out the 'risky' 35-40m kicks which were his biggest weakness at Freo and I'm sure he has a pretty decent disposal efficiency if you care much for that stat.

Anyway, I think he's a touch better than ordinary but really that's just splitting hairs as I basically agree with you. We haven't missed him, he'd have gotten games through injury and suspension but would have lived mostly on the fringe. I'm happy he's secured himself a spot for himself somewhere.

Depends on your definitions of missed and good.

He is AFL quality and one of the better defenders that the saints have. Is he better than MJ? No and I doubt he ever will be. But we have had to draft extra people so that we can find someone to fill a spot in the backline that he was penciled and partly groomed to fill. After all in teh draft you don't bet that everyone will make it. I would think that you have to take 2 or 3 players for every spot you want to fill. So replacing Roberton, given we go nothing in the trade, has meant that we have taken Brady Grey, Tom Vandeleur, Michael Wood in the draft and we redrafted Crytown (not saying they are better or worse) and we could have been using those picks to find a forward.
Roberton has cost us plenty. I miss him because of the missed opportunity cost and because he may not be flash but he will play 100-150 games for the saints easy. No matter what others say, nothing says successful AFL player better than 74 games in your first 5 years of senior footy. Fyfe is a star and has only managed 105 in the same time.

I guess it depends on whether you feel we have replaced Roberton or freed up a spot on the list for a better option. Spurr and Sutcliffe come to mind in our back half.

Perhaps I am underrating him but I'm pretty comfortable seeing him in saints colours to be honest.

Roberton isn't the same kind of player as those 2 really. He's more in the Johnson/Ibbotson mould and plays a similar role for the Saints as Johnson plays for us. 3rd tall and main rebounder. He's 194cm.

Suttcliffe was earmarked to fill Duffields role. Which he is doing.
Spurr is older (mature age recruit) and we need a replacement coming up. This was what Roberton was going to be doing but we have had to sacrifice two draft picks and two rookie picks to get back what Roberton was. Namely a run of the mill small medium lockdown defender. We don't currently have an experienced spare and we have to rely on a HBF or an inexperienced Grey if something happens. It was a big concern for me at the start of the year. less so now that grey is showing promise in the WAFL

Yeah agreed but we already had Ibbo and Johnson on our list, couldn't see him in our current backline setup. McPharlin, Duffield, Ibbo, MJ were already there. Spurr and Sutcliffe have come into our backline since, along with Dawson. None are really the same type of player but I think our backline is better for freeing up a defensive spot on the list with Roberton leaving us.

In retrospect without really putting too much thought into it, it was probably what freed up a spot for MJ to switch into from the forward line where he was stagnating. Again i'm pretty comfortable with that.

I like Jetta. What I really want to see is someone in the backline who will replace Duffield, and be dangerous setting up play from defence. Electric pace and great kicking skills ranked ahead of lock down defensive skills. Hill can do it, but is probably too valuable for now. But if Jetta was in the side they would pair beautifully.

Having said that, some of the young boys already bring that skillset.

The Michael Johnson that plays for Fremantle?
Well Johnson is listed at anywhere between 192-195. Roberton is 194. So let's just say they are the same height. And Roberton plays a similar role at the Saints as what Johnson does for us. Certain more like Johnson than he is like Spurr or Suttcliffe.

Question: How good is Josh Bootsma?

I've heard from pretty reliable sources he is arguably the standout backman in the WAFL, AFL listed players included.

Please refrain from answering if your knowledge of him is limited to snapchat.

I would be happy if the club picked him up. He's pretty good.

Bonus is, he's been in the Peelmantle system all year so would have a decent understanding of the clubs basics down already.

The people who watch Peel weekly have said nothing but good things about him. Consistently among Peel's best players.

I gotchya :)
The AFL listed stat has Johnson one whole centimeter, towering over Dylan with his ten extra monstrous millimeters. haha.

I was actually making sure you weren't confusing an Olympic runner with an AFL footballer.

My best mate in Adelaide believes you guys are targetting Schultz? I guess it kind of makes sense. Letting Pav play second/third tall.

Why does he believe that? Is it simply because he is a KPF who is possibly available, ergo Freo are interested?
Well he is 24, pretty social around the Adelaide scene, knows a few people. Put two and two together and you know. Fremantle are interested in him. Whether he leaves or not, that is the question.
