I'm sure Pickering canvassed all Vic clubs and took the best deal back to Boyd. No other Vic club had the money in their cap or wished to invest that amount of money on Boyd except the Dogs is my guess. The Griffen situation also a factor. Opportunity to make a transition happen while Boyd was stuck in a contract.
Carlton had a ~900K figure in front of Boyd and I understand we had an agreement in principle.

Pickering, as much as I may not like him isn't silly and seized on the opportunity that presented in the here and now.
Pretty sure we'll get the full version one day but nevertheless, this sort of stuff has been going around forever. Good luck to The Dogs.

Griffen is probably the major factor. As far as I'm aware he would have been willing to go to most clubs in Melbourne with a bright future as long as the money was solid in 2016, Griffen leaving gave him an avenue to get home immediately instead of waiting a year. I don't think we'd have gotten him if we waited another year tbh.

Living in Sydney id disagree a little: he is great mates with Ward. That and the bright future of GWS had a huge pull (and the big money) I see him regularly with ward and other GWS players at the beach having a great time. The players some here for the money, but also because it's an aweosme city to live in. I think Sydney is going to become a very nice location for players in the future. More so then the Gold Coast

You misunderstand; I meant Boyd was probably willing to go to most improving Melbourne clubs and Griffens departure was the fortunate catalyst to get him to the Bulldogs. Griffen was only ever going to GWS.

My understanding is that Boyd's decision to come to the Dogs was largely due to the timing. It wasn't the money as after news got out about our attempts, numerous clubs matched that offer. However, the Griffen decision presented an opportunity to get the deal done. Tom wanted to come home. This was known by a lot of clubs. But while he was contracted, getting a trade done was going to be difficult...until a contracted captain of another club signalled his intentions to leave for GWS. Our recruiting staff and Pickering went into overdrive. If it weren't for this situation, Boyd would still be playing for the Giants this season - and every Victorian club would be putting together enormous offers (both contractually and in terms of trade hypotheticals) to lure him across. It would be open season, and the Dogs would lose their biggest advantage: being able to bring him home a year earlier.

This is why those using the, "Dogs should have traded Griffen for pick 4 and then got Boyd next year," argument are missing the point entirely. Boyd to the Dogs was never a sure thing. It was simply the best option at this point in time.

Sydney is a proper, proper shit hole.

I hate living here.

The sooner my mother in law ships off into the great unknown or recovers from her illness I'm getting the glory be out of here and back to Melbourne, post haste.

Agreed, would much rather live in any of the other major cities in Australia tbh. I hate Sydney and everything about it! :p

Having lived in both Sydney and Melbourne I can honestly say they are both great but in different ways.

You only have to travel around the world to realise how good both are.

People that are negative about either are probably down on their luck or just bitter about life.

Some of our kids that are a bit unsure probably just feel a deficit because we have small crowds and people in Sydney aren't really passionate about AFL.

Give it a few years when we have 20 thousand plus members and playing in GF's and it won't be an issue.

Not many Swans are keen to get out of Sydney...wonder why??

Lived here for 92% of my life.

Place is a shithole. I'd rather live in Syria than Shitney.
Inner west is magic. Erskineville, Newtown, Petersham. Low key, great coffee and bars, great parks, theatre, shopping. Converse and t-shirts all round. The rest of Sydney is bollocks tho. I'd love to get back to melbourne.

Soft spot for Brisbane
I hate the beach.
I don't own a boat.

If you don't do either of those things Sydney is a rubbish place to live. Outdated public transport, pathetic roads, over-priced real estate, terrible pubs, average restaurants, surrounded by flogs...Shit place to live.
Yeah, that's not true.

Plus - the weather is fantastic compared to Melbourne.

(Note: I don't live there, but have lived in both)
