Depends on the price and what position you want him playing
I be honest I think he could play either forward or back. From what I have seen of him he is defensively sound, and is willing to run to defend. We need to find a way to stop the ball from just waltzing out of our forward line as soon as the ball hits the deck.

I'm not convinced he is a defender and at the price he would command it is a tough call in terms of a forward.

The lack of a small forward in the side is a little overstated to me. The three most appropriate players to play the small, tackling forward role (Rohan, Heeney, McGlynn) have all been injured and two of them have been out for a long while now. All three would be spending time in the forward line if they were fit.

Alex Silvagni, Jack Leslie, Tanner Smith, Tom Simpkin, Sam Siggins, Sam Shaw and Lachie Plowman are the young key defenders I'd consider offering good money to to come in next season. Particularly Smith, Siggins and Plowman.

John Butcher, Mason Shaw, Jack Fitzpatrick and Fraser McIness are some other youngish utilities who could be convinced to change clubs and take up a KPD spot. I'd be very interested in seeing what Butcher could do as a defender.

Siggins is a spud and will probably be delisted this year. Plowman high draft pick we can't get and can't pay for. Butcher will do just that to the ball as a defender, same as he does as a forward.

I like that you're looking though :)

Your idea is to turn one of the worst kicks on an AFL list into a defender....oh my! McIness is the best of those options though. Plowman is worth an enquiry at the very least.

Plowman can't get a game at GWS and hasn't played 20 games yet, he couldn't command too high a salary. The main gripe I have with him is that he seems to be more of a rebounding/3rd tall kind of defender, which we don't need more of, we need someone who can take up one of the two KP spots.

That said, I wouldn't have thought Ted would fill out to become an All Australian KPD. so Plowman might be able to do the same thing.

Tanner Smith would be my primary target for a KPD.

I disagree on Plowman. Think he has the potential to at least be the 2nd tall, plus he has good speed and a decent intercept mark. I would be very interested, the question is, how much though...

What difference does it make if our defender misses his target by 2 metres instead of 1 metre?
I think you are onto something there actually.

If we missed by more we wouldn't necessarily kick it straight to the other guys and we might be able to get another stoppage because you can never have too many of them.

We need worse kicks not better. Should be achievable as well with very little tweaking.

Sorry to intrude but thought i could provide a little insight. Butcher's back is rooted and it's killed his agility and a bit of his speed which makes him unviable as an option for a defender. He just won't be able to keep up on the lead, he can't get down for the low ball and he won't ever have the strength one on one now.

Word is that Mason has an offer on the table to come back to WA (with the crazies down by the water) and is tossing up between staying where he is or coming back to WA.

In regards to fraser if you were to chase someone i think he would give you a decent option. He is never going to be afl quality as a key forward however his ruckwork is very, very good for his height and i think long term he could play as a second ruck and at least break even there whilst being useful around the ground. The other part of his game which really hasn't been developed and it's something im quite annoyed about is his ability as a key defender. Having watched him as a junior myself and a few others really thought he was a much better option as a key defender rather than a key forward as he isn't an amazing mark on the lead (he tends to jump with straight arms meaning contact from a defender regularly (most of the time against good players) knocks the ball loose. He is however quite quick in a straight line, good at reading the play and very strong one vs one (why he's able to contend in the ruck well at his size). We are likely to offer him a 1 year deal on low money with an auto second year based on games played and other key criteria. A straight 2 year deal on higher money (280-300k a year instead of 150-180) would likely get him interested in moving and i see genuine upside. From an eagles perspective he isn't worth much but i could see him along with a couple of picks being packaged up in a trade for Jetta particularly if you guys are chasing a tall utility with upside whilst maintaining and improving your draft position so as not to go into debt with your academy picks and slightly lowering the strain on your salary cap.
