Preview 2015 Fixture

From an on-field perspective I think we have another favourable draw this year. If we can get through the first 5 games with a win or 2 and put up good games against the top 4 then the second half of the season should have a lot of games that are winnable.

Seems like a really soft draw for us , 2x up against GWS saints and dogs could give us 6 wins without even improving that much

Melbourne GWS on a Friday night to finish the season will surely be moved for the finals
Considering we beat zero of those teams in 2014, I wouldn't be too confident.

More likely that they'll all embarrass us, while we'll instead achieve stirring wins v Carlton, Essendon, and Richmond when they're all out of form. Plus maybe a game interstate.

That being said, it certainly isn't a bad fixture. I reckon games v GC, Adelaide, Brisbane, Richmond, WC, Essendon, Carlton, and GWS/Collingwood/Saints/WB x2 are possible. If we can even pull off half that would be something.

GC, Adelaide, WC, and Brisbane would be big upsets, but definitely possible.

Haven't had a home game against Carlton in 6 years. Have played one home game in 10 years against Essendon.

FIXture.

I wasn't saying I was confident just pointing out that we could win 10 games without bein THAT much better

That's our problem for being s**t

nickgrant69 - it isn't a problem with being s**t. You still play every team, home or away, regardless of whether you are s**t or not.

Melbourne are getting shafted by being forced to play against interstate sides in every. single. season.

We will have played a total of 12 home games (of a possible 33) against Victorian sides over the 3 seasons. Now, assuming fairness (and with half the comp being Victorian) you would assume a total of 15-16 over a rolling 3 year period. We have played a flat 12.

It is about being s**t , our attendance is down so we don't get to play the big teams

Melbourne GWS on a Friday night to finish the season will surely be moved for the finals

We're not playing on Friday (most likely), the schedule for the last round is worked out towards the end of the season.

It'll be moved to a Wednesday afternoon, in November, at Casey Fields.
They'll aim low and try to beat the crowd at the Dubai Test...

It could possibly be argued that the AFL tried to give MFC a leg up by having interstate teams play Melbourne in Melbourne - isn't there usually some sort of home ground advantage??

In the following example:
- Melbourne vs Brisbane
- Melbourne vs Richmond

I would rather have the Brisbane game in Melbourne and the Richmond game as an away, than having the Richmond game as a home game and the Brisbane game played away - Melbourne has a better chance of getting a win with the former.

^It's a good point. There is a line to walk between on and off field benefits of the fixture.

On a slightly different note, we've played Carlton away a lot, but from memory these nearly always happen at the G? What's the go here? Do Carlton have some sort of agreement to play a certain number of home games there?

Yeah exactly that... Carlton get to play 4 or 5 home games at the G (much the same as Essendon) so it makes sense that the majority of those will be against the 4 tenant clubs and Essendon. Unfortunately we are last on their list of clubs to play twice per year behind those 4 big clubs... Hence we cop the away game every year.

It's the difference between a good on-field draw and a good off-field draw.

You are correct in saying that playing interstate teams at home in Melbourne should provide a larger on-field benefit to us due to the travel required for the opposition.

Unfortunately, playing our home games against interstate clubs means the supporters of those clubs have to travel as well or stay home and watch the game on TV (which is more likely in most cases). This means the attendance at our home games is significantly lower than it would be if we played these games against Richmond, Essendon or Carlton. I can't remember the figure off the top of my head, but you need roughly 20k to attend a game at the MCG to break even. Playing GWS, GC, Freo etc at home puts us in jeopardy of losing money on these games. Playing Essendon or Richmond would never result in a loss financially.

Unfortunately there's no quick solution to this. We need on-field improvement to convince the AFL that we deserve a greater share of the big money games at the MCG and off-field improvement to draw in more revenue (from membership and other sources) so having the odd low-attendance game doesn't cripple the club financially.
