Analysis 2015 Forward structure

HF: Walker Rowe Everitt
FF: Menzel Casboult Jones

Would like a small crumbing forward in there somewhere.
I would be tempted to move Walker and Everitt to the wings with that setup. Bring in Dick and Buckley as the small forwards.

Smith could be a good small forward type, particularly until he gets his fitness up. Tough crumber, handy for forward pressure.

Walkers coming from say way back with his knee.
His main weapons were taken away from him last year being his leap, agility and speed due to his knee issue.
There have been rumours that it will never be as good as it was but I must say, I liked the way he moved via the gameday footage from last week.

Can only hope (???) that it's as good as it can be.

A few things I noticed there. His handball usage. His good vision to find a teammate by hand in traffic from stoppages, and his inside 50 entry. Needs a few runs in the middle.

I wonder if we might try Byrne as a forward. Played hsi first Northern game as a forward and performed well. With hsi speed, tacklign and marking ability he might sneak under the guard

What is the view of Jones' game yesterday?

He took 3 or 4 very nice contested marks and presented well. If he works into space and gets the ball 3 to 5 more times a game it's about what you want from at least one of the key forwards.

It's a bit like Carlisle has been forward prior to this year, Jones is doing the hard things well but just needs to keep his work rate up and work into space a bit more to get that easy ball.

A lot of it has to do with developing chemistry and the quality of the ball movement. It's no surprise that he has looked best in a team in which the midfield turned up for the best part of 4 quarters.

Surely, the forward line needs some players that can get separation and lose their opponents. That is an important part in the art of being a dangerous and good forward. For that skill a player needs speed of the mark and the natural talent to read the play and know when and where to lead, or run up and back and all around to lose their opponent. Sadly, I don't see too many current Blues players that display that talent. Betts, Garlett and Waite have that ability. Gone. So who is left?

To my eyes there are only a few:
Walker
Yarran
Thomas
Judd
Murphy (though it looks like he has lost his zip)

On top of that separation and leading ability, the good forward needs that instinctive and accurate goal kicking ability. That also means being a penetrating kick. That deletes Thomas, Judd and Murphy from the list.

So what?

Deduction: The Blues need to play both Walker and Yarran in the forward line. Playing one is not enough. A good forward line needs at least two dangerous forwards like this because most opposition can easily take out one with their best close checking defender. Taking out two is a different story.

Walker also adds another dimension due to being a high flyer. If his knee injury comes good and stands up then the forward line doesn't need 3 big talls. The forward line could become much quicker and apply more pressure on the ground with only 2 talls. With 2 attacking players who know how to lead for the ball like Walker and Yarran, the forward line only needs the 2 big talls to be pack crunchers. Casboult and Jones can do that. That would allow Henderson to move back to his best position at CHB. The whole backline could be built around a gun CHB like Henderson was starting to show 2 years ago.

Just food for thought????????????

Carlton Forwards Training Session:

Forward Coach - "Now remember what I've been instructing you boys for the last three years - BOMB IT LONG AND HIGH!"

Player 1 - "Yeah, but coach what about leading to space?"

Forward Coach - "Nah, **** that shit. Bomb it long and try to take a speccy or clunk it!"

Player 2 - "Coach, how about we discuss clearing the forward fifty so I can have some space to lead and mark?""

Forward Coach - "Nah, **** that shit. Bomb it long and compete against each other! Whoever clunks it wins a Freddo Frog!"

Player 3 - "Coach, I can't kick to save my life, can someone help me?"

Forward Coach - "Nah, **** that shit. You can clunk 'em real good, just keep clunkin' them."

Player 2 - "Coach, can we have a talented, nimble small forward who reads the play well and doesn't fly for pack marks who will crumb the loose ball and kick goals?"

Forward Coach - "Nah, **** that shit. So, to summarize, I want the mids bombing the ball long and high into the forward 50. I want them to land it on your head. You'll most likely have at least two opponents and another team mate trying to mark and spoil the ball. We all love a challenge don't we? No need to practice our kicking this week boys."

From his 8 touches, I think about 5 of them were entries inside 50. So I like the fact that he seems to leading up the ground a bit to provide a link up option. We need a bit more of that if we are going to play 3 talls. Can't have them all standing there waiting for the bomb to come in then competing in the same pack. You need one, or sometimes even two of them, to lead up the ground and give the others space. This also drags one of the defenders up the ground a bit. Also gives the smalls a better chance at running onto it at pace and crumbing. We just aren't getting any crumbing at the moment. That's where we are obviously missing Betts and Garlett, but even they dropped off from crumbing towards the end and tended to lead more.

Since Cringle and Robbo's my hero seem intent on polluting the Round 10 preview thread with a tiresome Watson vs Jones stalemate death-match, time for a post-Mick analysis.

Averages:
  • Marks Inside 50: Casboult & Jones are tied at 1.7. Henderson comes in at 1.3.
  • Goals: Casboult & Henderson are tied at 1.3. Jones comes in at 0.7 (Menz leads at 1.6)
  • Carlton are 17th for inside 50s, so whichever talls we play, they're starved.
  • Everyone's new whipping boy Tutt, is equal 8th for inside 50s and 5th for uncontested possessions. Doing the job but needs to work on disposal.
We can't carrry 3 blokes over 195cm in our forward line if they average less than 4 goals between them. If we want to give Watson another go, it'll only work if Henderson moves to CHB. Otherwise, Walker, Everitt and White should rotate accordingly as the 3rd tall forward alongside Lachie and Levi. They're fitter and more agile than Liam or Matty.

Creative use of Jaksch and Kreuzer up forward is something Barker should experiment with.

Great stuff Azul! Appreciate the stats.
Very much would prefer Jaksch up forward.
