As an exercise in having a look at what our idealised VFL side might look like for much of the 2015 year to see what chance we are of doing well in the VFL 2105 season. Obviously I am bored with so little footy news – it has come to this desperate attempt to add some more optimism for our club in the 2015 season.

I have tried to create a team and place them in a likely position as well. Some might be a bit controversial – and obviously 1 or 2 might step up and get in the best 22 in the senior side by year’s end. But that would result in 1 or 2 players I have listed in the best 22 side would come back into the VFL side. They would still be good players for us at the VFL level – and you would expect their skills and experience would make them players who likely to be above this level.

I have used BHP’s senior team (except Cowan who I replaced with Hartman. Just think he will be more likely to make it thru the season, and Cowan has missed a ton of footy and is a bit injury prone) so I can eliminate 22 players that will not be available for selection in the VFL.

FB Bews Lonergan Rivers

HB Mackie Taylor Enright

C Duncan Guthrie Caddy

HF Motlop Clarke Kersten

FF Stokes Hawkins Bartel

Foll. Stanley Selwood Johnson

Bench. Blicavs, Hartman, GHS, Murdoch.

Now that we have eliminated 22 players from the list – the rst of the senior listed players left play will play in the VFL team this year if fit (I assume some of the guys that will be noted here will get some senior games but come Sept. they will come back down to the VFL as we pick our best senior side).

Smedts Cockatoo McCarthy* Vardy * Kolo Lang Blease Kelly
Gore Simpson* Hmac* Menzel* Gregson Cunico Walker Jansen
Cowan* Luxford Read Thurlow Toohey Lucey Bates* Delaney*

(24 players from the senior list who are most likely to play VFL ahead of most of the VFL listed players)

  • Players that are either injured now or their history suggests they are suspect to injury. So may need to be replaced I make that around 8 players in total. That is a huge number and has to be dealt with be seasons end. Cannot carry too many players that are injury prone IMO. Takes away our depth and the need to concentrate on those players that are likely to be available most of the year if we need a call up for a suspended or injured player in the best 22.

FB Kolo Delaney* Luxford

HB Thurlow Walker Kelly

C Cockatoo Cowan* Blease

HF Menzel* Vardy* Smedts

FF Gregson Toohey McCarthy*

Foll. Simpson* Jansen Lang

Bench. Bates* Gore HMac* Lucey Read Cunico

Plus there will be some of the GFC VFL listed guys –

Gleeson, Hollmer, Linton, Bath, Tudor, Leerson, Herbison, Corrigan, Fort, Maas, Sully, Raidme, Measures, Sherman, Banjanin, Lynch, Paliouras, Lever, McFarlane and Duncan.

Gleeson is obviously a starter and given they have played VFL for us in the past the others on the bench are likely to come from Hollmer, Corrigan, Maas, Sully and Raidme.

For me that is a pretty strong VFL line up. Of course there will be personnel missing due to injury (especially as there are 8 somewhat injury prone players in this list. But we have pretty good back up players on our VFL list that have played quite a few VFL games for us in the past few seasons.

So basically this is my ideal VFL team to play finals in 2015 – and I reckon have a really serious chance of winning the big one, although much of our success may depend on our injury list.

It has a heap of talls, especially rucks and some real talent that will likely find its way into the best 22 in the next season or two. There is enough leg speed and a fair amount of experience at VFL level – and some at senior level. Not sure how Kelly will like his role but he would be a gun at this level and be the quarter back in defence.

If we can get anywhere near this team on the park come September – we are a serious chance of getting many of our newer players to experience success and a Premiership. I think this helps their development. Success generally breeds success.

What do you think of the team and its chances in 2015 of doing well (in the finals ? - yes I am very optimistic about our chances if we can get at least half of the injured or injury prone (asterisked players above) fit and playing in the VFL come September 2015.

Please feel free to change the side - the players, the positions or anything else that you think is most likely to happen. This is an ideal side - not based on probability as having Menzel, Cowan, Simpson, Delaney and McCarthy in the one side is probably 100 to 1 chance unfortunately (but technically possible).

Gleeson has retired [now at Torquay ?]
Corrigan doesn't play VFL anymore, even though he was on the list.He does coaching with them.
Sully has gone to the NEAFL in QLD
Banjanin has retired from VFL

Thanks for those details - I just used the Geelong website to get a list of the VFL players available - perhaps they have not updated it from last season ?

So we have a fit Hamish McIntosh and Simpson playing in the VFL and Stanley and Blitz lining up in the 1st 22?to fanciful for me byby.

I'm with you - if Simpson is fit and playing ok - he becomes first ruck in the senior side - and maybe Stanley goes out of the 22 and into the VFL side.

I know it looks strange but I had to start somewhere and I plucked a side from BHP's best team so I had somewhere to start.

really,picking a VFL finals team NOW ? o_O

I wrote Fred that I was bored with no footy on (I even started watching the footy on TV from the NT to get some fix as well as watching some replays of 2014 games on Foxtel) - so I put this together so I could keep being in that footy space I am current craving for. And maybe for others in a similar position to me.

What do you do when the footy season is over ? Sit around twiddling your digits ? Or try and create, no matter how pathetically, something that might break the deafening silence ?

PS. I still maintain we are a real show this season to win the VFL comp. But then again I thought that for the last 3 seasons - and the last 2 have not been really what I predicted. Injuries have played a bit of a role in this - but I just get the feeling we will just get better over the season and by the time we play finals we would have gelled quite well as a unit. The only thing that may stop the momentum is a bad run with injuries.

I thought it was a stimulating exercise JD, not just for VFL die hards, but also because its a very good illustration of the depth we now have in every position. There will of course be injuries in 2015, but if we are lucky with them as you say I can definitely see our VFL team giving the premiership a good shake again.

What's wrong with the fine BigFooty tradition of accusing everyone else of being either too positive or too cynical about the GFC?

:)

Spend time with other pastimes. I'm catching up on my books at the moment which is great (not that footy affects that either way).

Yes I like reading but reading is part of my job.

Footy takes me to a different space than reading. I sort of feel the game as I watch it being played.

And I am just so committed to GFC - far more than any book.

And the final point - is that book has a start a middle and a finish. The GFC never finishes it just changes - like each year being a chapter of a never ending story.

I often find myself somehow having wondering off (without even realising I am doing it sometimes) what we can do to be a better team, moving players across the park to find the best combinations, thinking of what we need to make our first priority, the small things we can do that might give us an edge, what players look like they could develop well and make us a force and a real premiership threat, etc.

Perhaps it is an addiction for some ? - a fix that takes them to another, better place. But like any drug there are good times and bad.

Footy is a book you never finish (for some anyway).

Great analogy, JD. Maybe spend some time watching games from the past couple of years and see if you notice different setups on the field, different payer roles, or player weaknesses and strengths that you might've missed when watching the game live.
Then, when you've worked it all out, you can share your thoughts with us here :) There are many posters who love discussing that sort of thing.

I wont go in detail here - but for me really most things are the same - not better or worse (on a philosophical level). Some people are right into gardening, others trail bike riding, others painting, others AFL, etc. These things, for whatever reason, draw us in. It is what we do with our time and want to use our time on.

And time is really all we get. You can make and lose money, and make it again. You can have a lover, fall out of love and find another lover.

What you spend your time on is the really the most important decision you ever make (though we rarely look at it like this). Time is gold time and is IT.

Some get only a few years while other get a century. But one thing is for sure - IT will end - and usually quicker than you thought.

Basically if you find something that uses your rare and limited time and you find joy in it - that is gold and you should get on with the mining of it.

Some of my friends who like art say to me that they paint and they look at the clock and 5 hours has disappeared but it felt like 10 minutes. To be that absorbed in something is special.

Geelong Football Club is special to me. I really like the game but I love the club.

That's great, JD. Some wonderful wise words there!

I think it's important to never feel guilty about how you spend your free time- if people are making you feel like you've wasted time on something that makes you happy, you have 2 choices: 1. Feel bad- and maybe change what you do with your time, resulting in you being less happy; or 2. ignore them and keep doing what makes you happy. You're better off choosing #2 because those people are never going to be happy, however much you change to suit them. :)
