lol Bundy for 21 is bad enough but losing Varcoe for Clark is a joke

Varcoe should be worth around pick 25-30 considering he is contracted, Clark is worth around pick 40 at best and that is generous considering his issues and the fact he chose us. If we give up Varcoe then Melbourne should be giving us at least pick 23 for the 27 we hopefully get for lonergan.

Just don't understand how Varcoe can play every game, play his best games in finals and then get shipped of in a deal where we should be bending over Melbourne? Why aren't we just giving them 55? or finding a way to get a pick in the 40's?

Whats next? maybe Taylor Hunt for a token late round pick is my guess.
Unlike Bundy Clark was contracted and while I think ultimately he would have been allowed to break the contract and get to us in the draft if he wanted, it was more complicated.

Also the reality is Clark is a very good player when fit, as is Varcoe, it's a fair swap for two equally injury prone players.

Now I would have rather kept Varcoe and traded a 2nd rounder as I rate Varcoe more than the 2nd rounder, but the reality is when you consider what Varcoe would have got as FA next year and what Clark is worth it is reasonably fair.

I think clearly there are two factors, firstly Varcoe seems to want a fresh start and secondly it is well known the club is very very keen to chase Dangerfield and Selwood next year, and with the new rule allowing you to bank unused cap for the next year, I think in the end they were happy to clear a very large chunk of next year's cap as it will help with that.

I love Varcoe though and I will be sad if he goes. My wife wears his number and she is very sad about the prospect, so as a family we will miss him if he goes.

On Bundy, no doubt it is a bad trade result, no question.

On Clak, I disagree. Sure I don' think we can win the flag next yea but he is the same age as Hawkins and I think we all think we will be pushing for a flag before Tom's career is out. And Clark fills an obvious positional need. The risk with him is his foot not his age.

On Hunt my word fom a good source was that he wanted to go months ago. Sure we could have tried harder to retain him if we knew about Bundy, but Bundy didn't tell the club, not their fault.

We need to bolester our midfield but a good draft with one or two ready made Dunstan types and a good free agent pick next year and we are back in it. Next year's free agency pool is way better than this year's so we just need to succeed then.

Your post about the draft shows how much luck is involved. If Menz and Vardy hadn't got injured and Bundy hadn't left it would have been our best draft since 2001. And with no picks inside 15! Wells might do it again this year so not all is lost.
Keeping filling the glass but I think the bottom's cracked.

Reasoned and I can agree with most. No matter what happens at the draft I doubt we will add a Dunstan play now type, just is not Wells way. He will add what he see as the best long term upside.

On Clark , can not agree. I think it was time to have a Mooney/Hawkins type succession plan.(like the old bull and the young bull) Nothing wrong with Walker as the second , they needed help at their feet ,and some resting goal scoring mids. Think we saw it once with Caddy.
Still I could be seeing it all wrong thru neg eyes.

Whats the chance we trade in a mid or two , or add a mature delisting. Thats sure to please many , adding some recycles.Again was fin with that when we were in NOW mode.
Add some not so young youthful types..You mention Newton etc , what this kid Whiley they talk about at GWS?

What is your next available pick higher than 47. Not saying he is worth it but just looking…

29 which Hunt isn't worth. Maybe our 35 and Hunt for their 29? Probably too much, they have 47 and 49 and either would be fair, though I would like to keep Hunt.

I don't think he'll go to GC though their midfield is very deep and he will go to a more bottom club so he can have a shot at secure gametime, which is what he wants.

Yeah that's too high but thanks. Wonder if we could get that with him and a pick…

Maybe maybe not.
14, 21, 29, 35 would be good for us.

After getting fisted in the Bundy deal, just looking to get some good picks.

Not suggesting fisting you just because we got it….

Thanks mate just the info I was after. Haven't heard anything about us being keen but I would give our pick 47 for him in a heartbeat.
47? That early? ...cant you get something in the 60's . 47 is almost usable.;)

If this trade period keeps up we will be luck to get anything at all that resembles par. 8 and 15 More youth Really?

True but we lack taggers. Hunt fills a need for us.

An interesting week coming up. I'll assume that Clark and pick 21 will be at Geelong no later than Tuesday.

This leaves a net result of Clark (Varcoe), 14, 21, 35 and 55 for the rest of the trade/draft period. If Hunt is set on leaving, perhaps we can package him up with 55 for St Kilda's pick 41? It'd leave us with 14, 21, 35 and 41 for the draft. Pick 55 for Newton instead maybe?

I would say Newton will cost either 35 or 41. Save 55 for the Blicavs upgrade

Out: Schroder, Burbury, Stringer, Christensen
So as it stands: 14, 21, 35, (55 - Blicavs Upgrade)

14, 21, 35 I would like to try and get anyone of Duggan / Ahern / Laverde / Marchbank / Goddard / Cockatoo / Garlett
55 for Newton would be okay if Port will agree to it.

I'd like to take 4 picks to the draft.
14 = Burbury
21 = Christensen
35 = Schroder
55 = Stringer
73 = Blicavs upgrade
Is that right? If Hunt goes we'll have 5 picks?

yep... Id love another pick inside 30 but I don't see it happening
we'd lose a pick but perhaps we could take 21 + 35 to get another 10-15 pick. Two inside top 15 would be good.

eg 11, 14, 55 and Blitz upgrade.

Only carry 43 players. It can be done.

Saves on SC too, as minimal as draft pick salary can be.

im not sure with our rather long injury and injury prone list we should go a player short.
