I hope they give him more time to recover than Ablett, he is a gun and could lead you guys to a premiership in the future.

He did the injury 9 months ago , its well and truly healed , he needs gametime and put his shoulkder through the rigours of a game more often , having a few more weeks off is not going to help Gaz.

@doclarkins: Terrible news for Sun Jaegar O'Meara- ruptured patella tendon means season over - major surgery required

Absolutely gutted JOM is out for the year :(

I wonder if there is some compensation to be gained. Few months after surgery on his patellas he ruptures a patella tendon? Post surgical complication? I suppose it would be pretty easy to say it was more likely due to underlying patella tendonitis.

Sad for Jaeger. We could really have used a bit of his hard edged dynamism today.

from GC Suns website

Gold Coast SUNS midfielder Jaeger O'Meara had scans in Brisbane this afternoon to determine the extent of the right knee injury he suffered in this morning's NEAFL practice match.

O'Meara, who dislocated his kneecap in the incident, will be sidelined for an extended period after scans revealed he will require surgery after rupturing his patella tendon.

General Manager Football Operations, Marcus Ashcroft said it was too early to confirm the specific surgery or an expected return date for O'Meara.

"The results of Jaeger's scans have confirmed he has ruptured his patella tendon. Jaeger and the club will determine the most appropriate treatment of the injury in the coming days.

"The anticipated timeframe that Jaeger will be sidelined for is unknown at this stage and will become more apparent following surgery," Ashcroft said.

O'Meara injured his knee during the second quarter of the game against the Brisbane Lions at Coorparoo.

It was O'Meara's first game back after undergoing patella surgery on both knees in London at the end of last season.

Rocket just said on Gameday on 7 that the GC doctors have spoken to O'Meara's surgeon in London and believe it to be a freak accident unrelated to the surgery. Obviously the pre-existing condition wouldn't help with the strength of the tendon.

Also said he was told that O'Meara was soccering the ball and had someone fall across his leg, hyper-extending the knee.

Hope we get an update on Jack Leslie soon. :( All I know is there was a possible concussion and a neck brace. Ideally there is no spinal damage. That would be horrific!

Please someone tag me if you find anything about Leslie. Thank you.

Commiserations on O'Meara... pretty much the season by the sounds of it.

Disastrous opening round for the two Qld teams. :/

Yes, terrible news. Knee injuries are especially cruel. I remember when O'Meara was being talked up as the next big thing a couple of seasons ago and thinking that unfortunately, injuries more than talent ultimately can determine whether a young player becomes one of the best of his era. Lots of brilliant playing careers can be interrupted by injury so we never get to see enough of their greatness. O'Meara has time on his side, so hopefully he will recover fully and go on to achieve his potential.

Gary would not have played if he didn't feel comfortable playing. It's almost like you're trying to suggest we forced him to play, which I can assure you didn't happen.

Remember, Gary refuses to take any pain killers. So while most would have had a jab to make them fine, or even a pill orally to dull it, he didn't. So he feels every pinch and pull. Significantly more painful for him than most.

We'll see how it pulls up I guess. Rocket is on Game Day today, and I'm sure the question will be posed to him about Ablett.
He could barely lift his arm above his waist, painkillers or not, he didn't appear ready to be playing AFL. I'm not saying the club forced him to play, i'm saying they should stop players playing when they need more time to recover, regardless of their reputation. He's a high risk of recurring injury, i know from following Beau Waters' shoulder injuries. I wished Beau took more time to recover after the first injury, and I hope Ablett takes more time to build to AFL, gradually increasing load and strength rather than diving back into AFL at the earliest opportunity.

Problem is the fact that we are to reliant on him and even coach Eade admitted this yesterday.

gary's had a long, and fairly lucky career. to have his first real major injury at the age of 30 is pretty rare. to be able to play so many games with only a few niggles here and there (we're talking soft tissue, sprained ankle, that sort of thing) and then get a shoulder reco is a massive thing mentally to overcome. he's play with such freedom at such a high standard over so many years of footy, only to have this burden of a bung shoulder put on him.

it's going to effect the way he plays, short term. maybe even long term, but it was only his first game back. personally, when they reported he only had his first contact training session the week leading up to the melbourne game, i'm no doctor/physio but that seems a bit rushed. we've got 24 weeks to build a run at the finals. i'd rather have a fully fit (mentally and physically) gaz playing 16 games than a hesitant, attention-grabbing gaz playing out a full season at half pace. the club needs to be smart long term for not only him, but for our season.

Dixon playing NEAFL in 2 weeks.. Good to see there not rushing him back for once.
Looking to get a good 16+ games out of him for change.

Hope so,,,, geez how injury prone have we been in the past 2 seasons and already this pre season and round 1..... Is there a curse at the Suns HERE,,,

Its been some 7 months since the operation...Even with todays medical science , this is about the best his shoulder will ever be.It wont have improved anymore in 2, 4 or 6 weeks time.So he plays now, not a problem cause you cant do anymore about he nature of the injury.Trust me, I did the same injury years ago,and my shoulder was never the same, especially in extending the arm into the air and tackling.

Not true at all. Anybody in Gary's position has about a 24 month recovery period before the body's natural healing comes to a halt. If Gaz isn't 100% this year, there's still a likelihood that he'll get there in 2016 (no guarantee though). The rehabilitation period after 7 months like Gaz atm has a lot to do with confidence in the injury - if Gaz is favouring it, he isn't doing himself any favours in terms of recovery.

Gaz being as functional as he is at the moment, given he's had a frozen shoulder, is pretty good. Nothing to worry about IMO.

Apparently Jack's the man to step up for O'Meara :)
Nice to see a player other than Gaz appear in the paper!!

States in the CM this morning that Jaegers injury could see him out for 2 YEARS, I am hoping that this is just media crystal balling but if it turns out to be correct it is shattering news for him, the club and us.

Likely to return to WA for recovery and will be out of contract once recovered. Not great all round

Based on what the injury report said, he ruptured his superior tendon completely (meaning nothing is connecting his quads to his knee cap). General recovery is 6 months until running, 12 months until back to normal again. We should hopefully see him ready to train in the next preseason, and unless stated otherwise, it's not unlikely that he won't. I'm pretty optimistic, and pretty confident that CM is just BSing like it always does.

I'd really hope that Jaeger, when recovered, would repay the club by training and playing at his best for the rest of his career. I know his surgery and his injury apparently aren't related, but the club's done a lot for him, and the fans can't wait to see him back in action. Such a blow :(

2 Years!? that's terrible dudes. I used to live on the coast and saw him play a few games, unreal talent. I'm a fan. Hopefully he's back and healthy for next year. I thought that the injury was related to the surgery, was going to say he went to one of the best in the world, he'd have to be very fragile or very unlucky to hurt it so quickly after that. I'd say it all comes down to bad luck.

This is from the AFL website about Jaegers surgery

"The good news out of the bad news is his patella tendon was intact," Eade said.

"He didn't sever that, he didn't rupture that, he pulled it off the bone. That was the extreme force that went through his leg when it was hyperextended."

The best we could of hoped for in the circumstances
