Why waste a rookie spot on him? we're just going to dump him when his contract runs out.

Does the AFL have rules in place to stop clubs simply delisting players whilst they're still under contract?

Ethically, the rookie list is the least we could offer him. You never know, he may work on his deficiencies ala Jetta and push for best 22 down the track.

I suppose there is also the chance someone else could pick him in the RD.

I don't think they just transfer. Terlich contracted to the senior list the process of delisting him and moving offering him a rookie contract would break the current contract and we'd have to pay him out.

If we have to to go the trouble of paying him out to get him to the rookie we may as well just get rid of him altogether. but i think the club wants to let his contract run out

Was always going to happen. Recruiters would be wanting to use pick 50 (will jump up to about pick 38 after academy bidding) in the draft. Ending up with picks 3, 7, 34, and 38 is a pretty good result for us in the end. Not a huge deal in the end that we lost pick 25 (would have become 24) for Melksham, essentially just a 13 pick downgrade to 38 given we'd have only had the list space to use 4 picks anyway (assuming we wouldn't have delisted anyone else). Melksham for 25 -> 38 feels a lot better than Melksham for 25.

Salary cap would cover that, I'd think. If a club want to delist a guy and he's still under contract, they get to pay him to not play football.

Yeah fair enough. I suppose in theory, delisting Terlich is a much better option, but if there is all sorts of contract mess around it that there isn't with Michie it works out. Same result at the end of next season really, if Michie improves, he'll do a Nev, if he doesn't he'll be delisted ... and Terlich will be delisted regardless.

Is it a fair assumption that we now have 4 spots, 2 first rounders that we are pretty sure of who we are getting, a diamond in the rough for JT to work his magic on and an insurance policy in case someone bids on Lovett?

I believe Michie was out of contract, and they want to retain him, whereas dumping Terlich to the rookie list would be to free up another senior list spot, which we now don't have to do. Though I am sure the preference is/was to get him to agree to a payout to leave completely ala Michael Evans.

I just wonder whether there is any sneaky chance at all that we might look at a DFA? Only ones I could think of are Jed Adcock, Matthew Wright or a ruckman of some sort...

That's good by the club. Basically saying if he doesn't get picked up they are going to try and get him up to the standard and grab next year.

Puts in a ton of hard work, makes some mistakes but that's why he isn't playing AFL. Excluding dressing up as Rolf, what's he done to generate this level of hate? Its just unpleasant, IMO. Stop sticking the boot into a guy because he wants to see out his contract.

Doubt anyone hates the bloke. Here's our list at present. In terms of chances of getting a game next year, I'd put Terlich in the bottom three of that 38 with King and Hunt. The latter two are developing players, Terlich is not. Why waste a year of development on Terlich when it will require a comeback rivaling Lazarus for the bloke to not get delisted at the end of next season? Delist, pay him out, throw Lovett or someone else a lifeline. Might not payoff, but I don't see Terlich playing for the club again.

I remember Terlich being a crowd favourite in 2013 because he'd take it on and try to get the ball away from our defence with Garland. As melbourne supporters back then that's all we had asides from Howe taking marks and Jones trying his heard out. If he can find his way back into the best 22 i'd be very impressed, but our defence is a pretty solid area of our game and with Bugg coming in it's hard to crack into. I guess why people hate on Terlich as now 2013 is gone he looks quite mediocre in a competitive side, but he could do a Jetta and pull one out of the hat but he'll need to do it soon because time is running out for him
