It's all fun and games until one OD's.

I would not be surprised if this is the next challenge the AFL has to face; a player overdosing but a long as they can control that very unpredictable habit.
Mainwaring wasn't a great look for the Afl even though he had retired.

If you want to try to make strawman arguments take it somewhere else

ofcourse drugs and alcohol negatively affect some people

but there's plenty of people who live fine with them
So no duty of care then.

Rightio... That's professional.

meanwhile Darren Millane has basically been cannonised despite the fact he was as drunk as a barge and could've easily killed someone else and not just himself....
Since when?

Most I know think he was a drunk dickhead who recklessly brought his life to a wasteful short end.

i don't give a one slightest damn if AFL players snort coke or drop pills - and as long as they have control over their habit, no one else should care either...
You got a son that idolises a player?

since they retired his jumper and any attempts to bring it back are fought with resistance
But they are magpie supporters...it's all they know. ;) But seriously, we need to be concerned about the drug and alcohol problems in our society in general, not just because they are footballers. But because OUR passion is football, that is what we focus on. The glorification of drug taking by elite athletes perpetuates the allure that anyone could do it. Fact is, while everyone can, not everyone makes it out alive. Not everyone makes it out unscathed. Addiction of any sort (alcohol, drugs, gambling) is an absolute scourge on society. It destroys families, relationships, lives. These young men have a huge disposable income and plenty of time on their hands. A recipe for disaster. I care what they do as players of my club. We invest a lot of time and money into them. I'd rather they not be snorting it up or pissing it away and wasting a spot on our list. I'd be pissed off at buddy if he were playing for adelaide, and we'd signed him for ten years at a ridiculous cost, and he couldn't play in the most important games of the year because of an addiction.

if your concerned about your son taking drugs, sit down and talk to him and make sure you let him know that if he's going to experiment, that he do it in a safe environment

This makes me think it's better that you don't.

ha ok - it would be totally better if my (hypothetical) child was experimenting drugs in silly situations because they didn't think they could talk to one of the people they should be able to trust in life....

i'm also making the assumption that jenny's kids are not yet adults -

radiojake is correct, we can not put our head in the sand and ignore it.

Kids (young adults) will experiment with drugs and if they do, they need to do it in a safe place and with people around who can and will help if something goes wrong.

I just thing the AFL have to be realistic and transparent about how they deal with the drugs culture in the AFL instead of ignoring it.

A new breakthrough in women's tennis you can't hear Maria Sharapova if you don't allow her the opportunity of returning the ball
