Mitch Brown, Jared Petrenko, Clint Jones, James Magner and Mitch Clisby believed to be the first of Essendon's top-up players according to superfooty. LJ also agreed to terms apparently
LJ. Jetta or Johnson?

I remember a year or two ago cmndstab having a go at the AFL for constantly changing the rules and using the high attendances/ratings as vindication for doing so. He stated that the quality of spectacle has a delayed effect on AFL following and that the high attendance/rating figures were, in his opinion, due to the good work done years earlier and that the effects of all the tinkering would only be truly felt later, perhaps this is a sign of what he was talking about.
Ive certainly gone to less games and paid less attention to teams that arent the crows. all this bullshit with the cola, forced expansion and contrived fixtures has really given me the shits. coupled with the afls desperate clawing for every dollar they can find, im just a bit over it.

Any SANFL player who signs up to Essendon for these NAB cup games believing it will help them get on an AFL list has rocks in their head.

They aren't going to look very good playing with a bunch of strangers against an AFL team. Better off sticking with your SANFL club, getting a proper uninterrupted preseason in you and impressing in real competitive matches, not this Mickey Mouse shiznick.
Could be there for a couple of years though...

Oh Lordy I can see it now. LJ to kick 8 against us while Pets collects 15 x I50 tackles and kicks 4.0.
Lol. Go a splash your face in some cold water!

I thought this was just for NAB cup? But I guess they'll have to cross that bridge eventually.

So if it's a suspension that only lasts a few rounds, what then? Surely the SANFL players can't go back half way through the season?
I think it was NikkiNoo who posted here that the SANFL clubs were nervous that they wouldnt get the players back for a long time. it stands to reason that if the bombers set up a team to cover their deficiencies for the nab cup, and then find their players are suspended, the simplest solution (though probably not the fairest) is to let them keep the top up players theyre already using and who have already agreed to terms.

What happens when the essendon players get rubbed out for a year...

Insightful guy, that cmndstab :p If anything, the lower ratings now are a result of the awful spectacle the AFL put forward a few years back. As much as things are kind of farcical off-field at the moment, I think the game is better to watch now than it has been for most of this century.

In the latter years of last decade it was almost unwatchable, with dozens of terrible HTB decisions every weekend and defenders penalised for even thinking of breathing on their opponents. They've improved it somewhat in recent years but I'm sure it hasn't had a positive affect on viewership.

As someone else said, though, at the end of the day having the teams with the biggest supporter bases winning premierships is the best way to get big numbers. Too many years of teams like Geelong and Sydney winning flags not to mention Port and Brisbane if you go further back. If Carlton, Richmond, Collingwood or West Coast embark on a dynasty watch the numbers go flying up.

SANFL club scared of losing key players to Essendon for extended period of the premiership season

SANFL clubs are furious at Essendon going behind their backs with direct approaches to players to recruit them for the NAB Challenge competition and fear the loan will extend into the premiership season.
Essendon administration continue to act in an unprofessional manner. Not having the courtesy to contact the sanfl clubs is a disgrace.

Doesn't this set a dangerous precedent for the SANFL?

What if the AFL put in place a mid-season draft? Could the AFL just pillage the best players from the SANFL at their whim?

What value is the contract the player has with their SANFL club?

And what of the squad numbers? Essendon's squad size would exceed the limits. Does this mean they officially delist the suspended players and recruit the replacements?

That's exactly what people want with a mid-season draft, to bring in players from other AFL clubs and use the NEAFL/SANFL/WAFL/VFL etc to trial a player/plug a hole. If this happens in the future, there's no stopping players moving from state league to AFL mid season because no player in their right mind would sign a contract restraining the ability of a league promotion.

This would finally relegate the SANFL to the minnow competition they've been running away from being for 20 years.
