Part of the issue I think is the mind numbing monotony of being an AFL player. They have everything managed, do little in the way of outside training or education in most cases and have large amounts of cash for young guys. When the pressure valve is released in the offseason they explode..
When we were at the player sponsor thing we were shown a breakdown of their average week and I was really surprised at how much free time players generally have. Free time in which you nonetheless have to closely monitor what you eat and drink and the level of physical activity you perform. Be a hard way to live.

Getting up at 6am everyday for work and having an active lunch , those poor dears can swap anytime they like with me.

Absolutely. I was given an insight into a normal training session the other day. Each player is given an individualized program at this particular club to the extent that player A is told they are going to run 2.35 km today whereas player B will run 3.75 km. They are pulled off the track as soon as this distance is met in the GPS. The scrutinisation is remarkable. As you say diets are strictly monitored, sleep, everything.

I was involved in a high level sport in the 90's (world champ level) and we never had this level of management. It would be mind numbing. I truly reckon we really have lost sight of what "sport" actually is.

That would get frustrating. I mean there's "doing 5 laps of the oval then come off" vs. "you will run 2.35km today then no more physical activity" etc - eat this drink that.

I don't even drink that much but there's no way I'm not having a small can of beer or a glass of wine whenever I feel like it. Players would all do the same thing.

Can you imagine doing all that running, then being told 'no beer'! :D
Six figuires salary would compensate it nicely.

Yes their jobs are hard, yes the training is hard , yes the discipline is hard.

But compared to the sacrifice and mind numbing routine for a lowly paid job they can HTFU.

And we're supposed to believe Essendon didn't record who got what injections, when footy clubs document and control every other detail to the nth.

Hello..? Try being a servant to 4 legged friend for sfa renumaration!

There is so much more that goes into preparing an athlete than what is visibly accessible.

post from Hawthorn vs WCE preview thread.

Not sure why everyone is making a big deal over the Hawks having to go to Perth. Google says it's only a 20 min drive from Aurora stadium. View attachment 171167

Lol, now that's something you can post on those campaigner's board.

Can long term use of cocaine cause epilepsy?

Not even trolling.... serious question
Yeah but pretty small odds.

Cocaine use can reduce seizure threshold in patients with underlying epilepsy as a direct toxic effect or indirectly by contributing to poor compliance with antiepileptic drug treatment, poor diet, or poor sleep habits. In 12 of the 58 patients, cocaine appeared to be the only provocative factor. This may be a less significant risk factor for epilepsy than either alcohol or head trauma.

I thought I heard the Swans say he is where he needs to be right now, and the club decided he needed treatment for his health issue.
I wonder if he's in a treatment place.

Possibly. A serious substance problem could be classified as a mental health problem couldn't it?
But also substance addiction/use can come from "self medicating" an existing mental health problem.
Or drug use could have nothing to do with it at all, "treatment" places can be just for mental health.
And who knows if those rumours from strange absences and then epileptic seizures simply led people to wrongly assume drugs when it could have been depression all along.

Whatever it is, hopefully he gets well soon.
