It's not really downgrading picks though, dependent on the points and where one feels they'll end up.

If we feel that we'll finish bottom four, then we effectively have 200 points to play with, where no impact to our selection will be felt.

Points come off the club's pick in the round the bid is placed. So a bid for SOSOS in round 2 (if we don't have enough points) would downgrade our second round pick next year - approximately 1 pick down per 35 points.

O.K. I didn't know that.......learn something new........every.........every second day :)

That could really push someone out of latter rounds altogether then.

Certainly a possibility. Though with the 197 point discount, any bid after 55 technically costs nothing in points (just the matching club's next pick). There's probably a sweet (sour?) spot in there somewhere but I can't be arsed finding it :p

O.K. thought that would happen but genuinely keen for SOS at the Dogs....nothing ventured...

There are a few The Dogs may like here and we're ready to take a bit of a reach into a 'project' player.
There are a couple still available.....There's the beast athlete but we're going for the beast 'jumping machine' here...... cfc4life ...you're up

Yep, correct. In matching for their own academy kids, GWS, Sydney and Brisbane have lost a few of their later picks to the back of the draft, improving our placement.

I am just surprised that our pick values ALSO get upgraded in the process. I could understand the later picks becoming "dead" picks, as their points have been used up, but to also get a points upgrade on our picks is a HUGE bonus to us. So not only did we gain benefits from having more players available at our pick be we also benefit from those picks having a higher point value.

Yeah - I really quite like the system. As I've said a few times, it encourages clubs with academy kids to trade for multiple late picks, which in turn gives more opportunity for other clubs to improve their draft position. Fringe players become valuable in trades, because even if you only get a late pick in return for them, there is both a market for those late picks and a likelihood that they'll improve as the draft progresses.

Only issue would be is early picks get "downgraded" to the point where a second selection needs to be used to get a player e.g. if the GWS #10 ends up being downgraded to #14 and the loss of points means that an additional pick is required to pick up a player. Not a HUGE issue if a side has a single academy/ f/s selection but if they have 2 or 3 then the difference in points MAY lead to a pick in the next years draft being effected when they otherwise wouldn't be,

Yep - more incentive for them to trade out for late picks :D

You either want what Brisbane have (very high pick + late picks) or what Sydney have (nothing but late picks). Holding onto a mid-range pick in the hope that you get an extra player is a bit counter-intuitive, I think.
