Just gave Steven a wrap in the midfielders thread, 88 from 33 possies is very disappointing. 54% DE, maybe he really is a risk vs reward sort of player.

The one thing I guess you could take from it, is it seems he is moving well. Half of last year he seemed to lack confidence in his leg after the break. Doesn't seem to be worrying him any more.

Just needs to fix his DE, no point getting 33 touches when half of them dont count.

Maybe better suited to AFL fantasy.

The worst part is there's no more chances to see him in action before we get stuck into the real stuff.

Ideally I'd like to see him get to a 100+ average, then be M7-8 by seasons end. If that's the case, I'll be happy. But I suppose if worse comes to worse, I might be able to cash out at his peak price (maybe around 550k) and get a super premium. Just seems too cheap to pass up if he stays on the park.

Every senior Hawk had a great game today, gotta be a bit cautious in picking up some of these players as a result of a dominant game.
Lets be honest, Hawthorn will win at least 15 games, most of those will be by 5-6 goals at worst. Ive had these guys for a couple of weeks but I'll be locking in Gibson and Newnes after tonight.

Jordan Lewis will be in the top 5 midfielders for the year.

Is a lock in my team and a great pod and captain option.
He is good value. There is no Sewell to compete with in terms of inside contested ball, really there is only Liam Shiels and Langford to compete with in that regard but they don't spend the same amount of time in the coalface as Lewis does. The only query is how much time Mitchell spends in the midfield.

Either way the Hawks early season draw looks good, it might pay to put a few of them in your team.

I agree on Newnes. I'm only referring to Hawks players, it was good to see Newnes compete and pull a good score against a strong Hawks team.

How will Birchall returning effect Gibson though? He's had a good NAB being that extra defender but there's no way he will get as much freedom in the real stuff.

Also last year he had a few 120 games but the thing that has turned me off him is he had about 5-6 games where he scored 50-60. Lake won't play a full season and Frawley is yet to prove himself. One injury and he's stuck as a KPD dishing out 50's

The way I see it, opposition teams like to keep Gibson accountable in the air, and Birchall accountable on the rebound due to his pace. With two quality talls in Lake and Frawley I think this favors Gibson as he is an underated rebounder.
If either Frawley/Lake are injured they simply bring in Spangher-Man.

Webster was a back flanker wasn't he? Newnes is playing in the middle, scoring a ton in a 100 point loss is a good sign.
Maybe. Not a lot of accountability in the NAB, especially from a side that's up by a lot. Hawks didn't seem to give a rats about him and let him run free.

Not saying he won't be good, just saying ignore the NAB completely unless it's a rookie :)

NAB is a whole different prospect now that it's practice games pure and simple rather than a competition with prize money.

SAM Mitchell???
If that's who you mean you had better re-check his stats. He's averaged 100+ in 8 of the past 10 years and 98.9 in another. He's also averaged 110+ in 3 of those years.

I stand corrected! My source for SC stats was apparently wrong.. Yes, he averaged over 110 in 2005, 2011 and 2012, then dipped to under 105 (2013), and was injured last year. At nearly 33 I'm not confident he can get back over 110 - which I think he'll need to do for his price.

I think Mitchell, Hodge and Burgoyne go ok with contested ball as well, no?

My takeaways from last nights night's game:
* The form of O'Rourke and Anderson likely pushes Whitecross further away from selection. Not good news for all those who still have him selected in defence.
* Duryea's place in the side may come under pressure from the above 2. If Birchall is fit, Duryea would be the only spot in the side I see as being up for grabs. Only one of Anderson and O'Rourke will play though. Only other change from the GF side of last year is Spangher out, Frawley in.
* If Duryea does lose his spot, it likely means the trio of Burgoyne, Hodge and Mitchell see a little more time in the back 6. Anyone planning to select one of these, just keep this in mind come Rd1 teams being announced.
* The top 2 scorers from St Kilda were heartening. Newnes appears to be genuinely spending plenty of time running through the middle, perhaps even in their best centre square set up.
* Steven butchered the footy a little, the fact that he found it so often was pleasing. He's not a great kick, but he'll be better than the 50 odd percent DE that he was last night. Bit of rust, but I think he is a very viable selection at his price. While I take peoples point about Hawthorn not paying him a lot of attention, keep in mind, St Kilda are going to be bad all year. Plenty of other teams won't pay him much attention either. That and there generally aren't too many teams applying hard tags anymore anyhow. From what I understand he has coped reasonably well with negative attention in the past. I'd like to hear what St Kilda fans think?
* No Goddard for St Kilda was disappointing. He hasn't done a lot wrong, didn't look out of place at the next level. I was hopeful he was one of the rookie defenders we could expect to play early, but I'm not so sure. Fisher and Delaney seemed certainties, but unsure of who might get the 3rd tall position. In recent years, they've often only played the 2, with guys like Dempster and Roberton taking care of any other talls. Might be one less rook to choose from sadly.

Absolutely, but their midfield time has been managed for the past couple of years and their roles have changes a bit with Mitchell and Hodge spending more time down back. Burgoyne tends to float forward and back and only really seems to go to the midfield when Hawthorn are in trouble on the scoreboard and need some quick clearances, which ain't that often.

The likes of Lewis/Shiels/Langford have been given a lot more responsibility for the inside mid grunt work for the H&A season, to keep the older guys fresh for September which has worked well as those three have peaked in September the last two years. With Sewell out I think Lewis has flourished as the go to inside mid and I think he can maintain that 110 odd average this year, he has to be considered if not for Round 1 then as an upgrade target.
