Opinion 2015 Starting 22 for Round 1

Based on your last nab game i dont expect to see either Petterd or Lloyd. I think Lambert will either be sub or just miss and Mcintosh will play maybe as the sub if Lambert misses.

I wouldn't read too much into NAB a number of players were rotated due to playing in games 1 and 2.

Lambert was probably given a run in NAB 3 to see if he could earn a spot but I really don't think he did, McIntosh on the other hand looks more likely. I wouldn't discount Petterd or Lloyd as both are close to selection, I'd be surprised if Petterd doesn't play unless there is an unkown setback.

I disagree with Gordon getting gift games, as last year we really didn't have any runners prepared to gut run to open the field(and provide a target) which is what Gordon did well. Plus he did kick quite a few goals as well. I don't think Madonna can do this, but he has other skill sets, which I hope he can prove is up to it.
Gordon's work rate is first class, has the size and bulk to win the contested ball, but lacks quality. He needs to improve his skills, agility and reading of the play to be a very good player. If you combined Gordon and Lennon then you would have the perfect half forward. For me Lloyd is the best option at the moment for the second half forward role.

I think Lloyd gets a game if we go for a 2 tall setup, considering we play a mid as a resting small as well. That means the other small is Edwards, with Morris just a stopper.

Hey guys.

Sorry to intrude, especially on game day (FWIW I can't wait either) but I have been active posting best 22's for all 18 clubs on the main AFL board. Would love to get your thoughts on my Richmond BEST 22.

Not necessarily the Round 1 team but i believe it to be the best available so yes that means Vickery will force his way in to the best 22 as that 3rd tall/ ruckman, maybe not tonight but over the season yes.

FULL BACKS: Dylan Grimes ~ Alex Rance ~ Troy Chaplin
HALF BACKS: Taylor Hunt ~ David Astbury ~ Bachar Houli

MIDFIELDERS:
Brandon Ellis ~ Dustin Martin ~ Nick Vlastuin
FOLLOWERS: Ivan Maric ~ Trent Cotchin ~ Anthony Miles

HALF FORWARDS:
Brett Deledio ~ Ben Griffiths ~ Shane Edwards
FULL FORWARDS: Steven Morris ~ Jack Riewoldt ~ Ty Vickery

INTERCHANGE:
Chris Newman ~ Chris Knights ~ Reece Conca
SUB: Ben Lennon

  • Think initially Newman will be a required player with his experience but pressure from VFL players will need to be applied during 2015. Arguably in his final year and if VFL form warrants it I'd be inclined to send Newman to the VFL or into early retirement. Not forgetting his heart issues from a few weeks ago to. Personally I'm a fan of draftee Nathan Drummond. Would love to see him get senior exposure during 2015.
  • Batchelor V Grimes is really 2 guys battling for one defensive spot IMO. I prefer DG's ability to run off and create and has the flexibility to play taller or smaller. In a considered slow in pace back line his run will be vital as well.
  • Hunt's the other back line addition. Handy in and will be a good role player in the back half/ midfield.
  • The midfield doesn't need to change to much.
  • Steven Morris has been talked up as that defensive forward pressure specialist who will lock the ball inside 50. Has shown his capability as a lock down defender but looks to be set for a new role in 2015.
  • Vickery probably won't play tonight but I don't think it will take long for him to force his way into the 21 over a smaller forward like Sam Lloyd.

You're probably not too far off the mark

Well I guess it is that time of year where we start discussing the best 22 for the 2015 season. For mine this is the side I'd go with assuming everyone is 100% fit:

B: Steven Morris 64 games 25 years old 185cm 83kg David Astbury 37 games 23 years old 195cm 96kg Troy Chaplin 185 games 28 years old 195cm 99kg

HB: Bachar Houli 114 games 26 years old 180cm 84kg Alex Rance 107 games 25 years old 194cm 96kg Nick Vlastuin 38 games 20 years old 187cm 86kg

C: Brett Deledio 214 games 27 years old 188cm 88kg Reece Conca 71 games 22 years old 185cm 83kg Brandon Ellis 65 games 21 years old 181cm 81kg

HF: Chris Knights 101 games 28 years old 184cm 84kg Ben Griffiths 35 games 23 years old 200cm 104kg Dustin Martin 108 games 23 years old 187cm 89kg

F: Tyrone Vickery 87 games 24 years old 200cm 97kg Jack Riewoldt 157 games 26 years old 195cm 94 kg Shane Edwards 152 games 26 years old 182cm 83kg

R: Ivan Maric 132 games 28 years old 200cm 102kg Trent Cotchin 131 games 24 years old 185cm 85 kg Anthony Miles 23 games 22 years old 179cm 78kg

INT: Ricky Petterd 83 games 26 years old 185cm 85kg Jake Batchelor 52 games 22 years old 188cm 88kg Taylor Hunt 63 games 24 years old 183cm 80kg Shaun Grigg 124 games 26 years old 190cm 85kg

Averages:
97.4 games
24.5 years old
188.5cm
88.6kg

Very even side IMO, solid defensively with a nice mix of accountability and rebound. Midfield looks much stronger with the addition of Deledio to the wing opposite Ellis. Both will provide us with support for the back line and good link up on the rebound. The forward line with another summer under their belts should work better as Jack Griffiths & Vickery learn how to work for each other rather than against each other. The bench gives us plenty of variety with Petterd and Hunt who can play back, forward or midfield, while the addition of Batchelor(who I wanted in the original line up) provides the ability if needed to move Vlastuin into the middle as needed. Grigg while not everyones favorite player is a capable ball winner who can accumulate possessions if he can get back to his hard running ways of 2012.

Amazing the turnover in a 5 year period. Of those that have left only 3 remain on AFL lists and it makes you wonder how we achieved what we did in the 2013-2015 seasons(3 straight finals appearances) when looking at that 22.

I think we only have 13 players on the list that lost the final to Carlton in 2013
