I keep hearing about this draft like it's a steaming Mr Whippy.

Is it really that bad?
On 360 they mentioned that this draft has some very good KP players in the 1st and 2nd rounds but they all agreed that as ruckmen, KP players take 3>4 years to really deliver. It was when they were discussing Dixon at the Suns and how GCS really need him to stay as he's just starting to pay dividends.

Even more incentive to get what we can for Selwood as a FA. Trade in Conglio and use our FA and 2nd rounder on a quality KP forward and a KP backman. In 3 years Kennedy will be 31:(, M Brown 30 and likely gone as may Schofield 29.

We looked fine for KP's before MacKenzie and Brown went down and sure we have McInness and Barrass developing but by 2018 we need another couple of talls to be ready to deliver.

Or we just trade in Hogan from the Demons.:D

If a quality mid isn't likely to be around later in the first round we trade one in somehow.

Looking at all of GWS's re-signings last year and this year they have to be pushing the cap limits.

Wasn't Tom Lamb drafted as a forward? He's 193cm and pretty sure he played his junior career as a KPP, although I could be mistaken. I know the club are planning to throw him onto a wing at one stage, but Schofield was a wingman before he played AFL.

We'll want Lamb playing in the middle I think. Get him around the contest as much as possible. His fitness would be wasted as a KPF and the talk of his ability to impact a game around draft time will have us giving him every chance to.

Don't think he has the football IQ to be a midfield or the touch. High half forward, presenting really hard and running back quickly towards goal. Think more athletic than darling but less grunt and much lower ability to read the play. Will take a few years. Still has the propensity to be a bust pick but already a better option than i originally thought. If he develops well think of somewhere in between nick riewoldt and staker. Hopefully more towards the riewoldt side.

Don't know whether it's just me, but he reminds me of Chris Mayne, although with a higher ceiling hopefully

Agree with this, he seems an athletic third tall at the moment rather than a genuine FF/CHF. It would be good to see him back in the WAFL.

Can't see that happening personally

Lamb is a pretty big unknown - could be anything, could be nothing. Going to be really interesting to see him develop, but not holding my breath.

We seem to have a pattern with drafts: first pick is as safe as can be, second pick is high risk.

Or maybe the bloke in the first round is just generally more talented and therefore appears a lot safer

Gaff over Polec has worked well
I'd argue Sheppard over Jetta would be in our favour this year at least

Duggan over Weller/lever/laverde seems too early to call

About the only one that there is an argument is the downgrade of effectively aish to get sheed and karpany

Lamb is a natural forward and it showed in the nab cup that he could turn a game by himself . Having a key forward that can repeatedly run up past centre wing and back is a massive asset .
He will bulk up and be a very hard match with his running capacity .
I don't thing we drafted lamb in the hope of turning him into a mid as it had been 4 years since we last drafted a key forward .

Jetta is having a pretty solid year, i'd still rate his output above Sheppards (although they are different players)

Yeah it's not so much about our first picks being safe but more a tendency for us to use our second picks on our riskier choices. Judd and Naitanui would never have slid past pick 5, so we are talking about a hypothetical reach of two or three spots. In hindsight both players could have gone #1, so yeah.

Obviously I'm not claiming that it's a hard and fast rule that will apply every single year, but it is interesting.

Weedon and Karpany were both high risk insofar as they didn't have an obvious role at AFL level - neither were natural forwards but nor were they obvious midfielders, so their success at AFL level was always going to be dependent on a lot going right development-wise. This has to be considered in light of the fact we have consistently passed up opportunities to get small forwards (Walters, Cameron, et al) in the later rounds and rookie drafts. We clearly didn't take Weedon/Karpany so they could play as small forwards.

Notte was touted as potentially taken in the late teens, but a lot had to go right for him to make it at AFL level. Swift had spent two years out of the game and was again high risk, high reward.

Like Weedon/Karps, Lamb strikes me as someone who we don't have a clear vision for - just a set of abilities that will result in a very good player if everything fits into place.

I don't think it's a bad thing - but I would rather we spread our risk around all of our picks (or save it for rookie picks) and use our second rounders on midfielders - we could have had Duncan, Blakely and Jansen instead of Weedon, Lamb and Karpany.

Good photo is today's West ( back page ) , photo is of Our Forward group together ...including Tom Lamb and Damien Cavka .

The forward line seems to have a bit of depth at the moment , hopefully it continues .

Bit early to be claiming we should have gone for Blakely over Lamb and Jansen over Karpany, I would have thought.

Between the four of them they've played a total of 1 senior game.
Just saying we would have two more midfield options rather than two guys who will take some time to realise a role.

I think we should focus on mids in the second round and use later picks on speculative talls/crumbers
