Id rather keep all of those picks and players to be honest. Im not all that interested in anyone thats been bandied about, except maybe Coniglio. There are good players in the 1st and 2nd rounds apparently, then it starts to fall away dramatically. I would rather we use our first, second and the Selwood compo (if he leaves). If we trade players to upgrade our position in the draft and secure more picks in those rounds then im cool with that too.
I'm going to pose you a question. Compare the 2003 draft and the 2008,10,14 drafts. Would you rather pick 15 and 33 in the 03 draft and no trades or say trading 15 and 33 and getting coniglio and using pick 51, 69 and upgrading a rookie.
Compare the same deal but using the potential prospects around in the 2008,2010,14 drafts. In situation 1 i would take coniglio and the prospect picks every day of the week. If it was option 2 we were looking at i'd be running to the draft. To me lit looks like we're looking at this being an option 1 not an option 2 draft.
A quality known player is worth so many times more than a late first and late second rounder. Coniglio will be a top 10 player on our list in years to come if we were to secure him or someone of similar quality. Potentially top 5 on our list. If you were to go to arguably the worst draft in the past decade and pull out a player who's in your top 5 players you would be stoked. People need to stop overrating draft picks.
