Well this is where I disagree. The days of 2 ruckman who cannot play forward are over no matter if its a 4 man beach and 90 interchanges or 20 interchanges. The game will become a game with less and less talls who cannot get up and down the ground. I wish we rucked Hickey myself. Think he is ideal in todays footy. Longer seems like a person from the past. Obviously the club think differently to me.
I think everyone thinks different to you

Club has been transparent that they are well into the long term project of developing our own rucks. Can't see them trading longer who is our number 1 ruck

Pretty sure Hickey is able to play forward. Showed success this year doing so. Also his a different Ruckman to billy. One is more athletic one is your battering ram. Both have a spot and it removes the need to go top heavy in your forward half by playing another tall

I think we wait until Melksham is done and hope something they get for him comes back to us, hopefully a little better than their 2nd
True.

If we have to trade pick 5 ideally we get an early 2nd rounder back & potentially on-trade that with our 3rd for Sydney's 1st (they'd do that as it equates to more draft points for Mills). Then trade our 2nd & 4th for Freeman & the Pies 3rd.

Carlisle
Freeman
Pick 14 (via Syd)
Pick 43 (via Pies)
Pick 78 (RU) - Sinclair

That would just about do me.

Having an excellent #1 ruck in longer and a not bad fwd/ruck in Hickey that are able to tag in and out throughout a match with the return of a full interchange will be invaluable. Especially in finals I would think. Longer shows a lot when it comes to taking contested marks around the ground, and well, tom hickey's nick is "stickey" isn't it? Great pair of dukes

Surely the strategy at this stage is to get Freeman and Carlisle, keep pick 5 and one other pick.

Personally, I think it will take a future draft pick to get that done.
It's actually crossed my mind that we may look at keeping pick 5 for this years draft, use next years early picks with a focus on free agency in 2016.

Classy bunch over on the Collingwood board
they're even bringing up Greening
You know what I might even do a list for you to take back there. These guys are basically untouchable:

Billings
McCartin
Bruce
Goddard
Acres
Dunstan
Armitage
Lonie
Sinclair
Steven
Roberton
Savage
Newnes
Longer
Webster
McKenzie

Basically anyone that's seen as a future best 22.
you forget Shenton.....

Id trade Longer if it meant getting Carlisle for just him. I don't rate tap ruckman who cant get the ball around the ground though. It seems plenty do.
Trade Longer?! He's untouchable for a reason, have a look at how far he's come since Round 1 last year. At 21 he had made a #1 ruck position his own, he held his own plenty of times this year and a lot of our runs came from his work in the ruck (seriously, go through the first dozen games of the season and our strong quarters coincide with Billy's strong quarters). He'll be a top 4 ruckman in the game when he's 26, a physical beast ala Shane Mumford whose importance in the side will be seen when he's missing.

As for him not winning ball around the ground, he came into the year at 21. You can't expect him to have the whole package by now.

Yep...something like:

25 & 44 -> Freeman & 27
27 & 2016 2nd -> Carlisle & 43

Trade Player + 43 -> Pick 35ish

Draft 5, 43 & Sincs

I reckon any of the bolded are tradeable, at the right price (not taking current contracts into account)
If you ever want to trade in someone good, you need to trade out someone rated best 22

Depending on how he goes next season, I reckon I could add Dunstan to that bolded list

Declaring all of those guys untouchable I reckon is a tad optimistic
Roberton Longer and Webster are easily best 22 and only going to get better, all hold valuable positions on field, they are essential for future success. no way they get traded

We've been searching for this KPD since the days of Watters. If Carlisle isn't the perfect fit for our needs, he's doing a damn fine impersonation. We should move heaven and earth to get him. Pick 5 though? Jee-zus. Makes me about as comfortable as a 1-armed taxi driver with crabs.

Our second rounder and Seb Ross for Carlisle seems about right to me. Anything to do with pick 5 I am not interested. We are a real chance at getting 1 of Parish or Francis at pick 5, particularly as Curnow seems to be firming. It is not worth giving that away and a truckload of cap space for Carlisle (Essendon's 3rd best defender). He is a good player, but he is not that good.

If it was Alex Rance we were talking about, I would be throwing everything at it but Carlisle is just not in that league. Let's not lose our composure because there are a couple of other clubs in the mix.

I'd love to keep pick 5, but this is quite good. Well done

FWIW I would do this.
JC, Freeman and a mid at 14 still good value and we keep Ross.
Spine sorted for 8+years.
Knocks out the dogs and saves them from cap oblivion.

Of course JC has to nominate us first but this is a good example that there are a number of ways of getting there if we choose to.

True destination of choice next year and beyond.

What would be our take it or leave it $$$ figure for JC?

It's looking like the only way we can sway him in our direction is with a godfather offer he can't refuse. I'm torn on this, he would be a huge get for us, but if he's only here for our money it just doesn't set a very good precedent or team vibe. Plus 800k+ over 5 years for a player with the clouds Jake has over him and you're asking for trouble. I think I'm leaning towards passing

Only a guess but I think around 400k to 450k could get it done. The years may also be important. Maybe 4 years at 400k.

Even with a godfather offer from us, Dons might agree to top up his salary in order to get better picks from another club. He simply must commit to us for us to do our trade.

Trade Hypothetical:

Given Geelong did us a solid last year with pick 21 for Rhys and this year they need to come up with a suitable deal for Dangerfield, would there be any interest in offering them Pick 5 for say Pick 9 and Jordan Murdoch?

PS Go easy on me, might well be stupid, just a thought ....
