What Ghost and Rahul alluded to the last 24 hours is there are rumours of a downgrade trade with the expansion clubs. We will still draft in the top 10 but have a pick in the teens for Carlisle whilst also giving up our second. The hope is matho lasts until this pick
What about our two years 2nd rounders to Essendon? If they also happen to get Melbourne's pick 25 for Melksham, that would leave them with picks 23, 24 and 25 this year and with two 2nd rounders in next year's draft.

They could do a hell of a lot with those picks with teams like GWS, Brisbane and Sydney needing points for their academy selections (including GWS needing more for next year) and likely to have a shit-tonne of picks between them, after trading out the likes of Treloar, Redden, Luenberger, and maybe McCarthy and Aish!

Essendon could do a hell of a lot of damage with picks 4, 23, 24, 25 and those two 2nd rounders next year and two 2nd rounders alone are worth more points than GWS's current pick 9, so they could easily enough get their hands on that pick for a start. Trade another couple of those picks for a teens pick and all of a sudden they have picks 4, 9 and 15ish and they're in business.

Alternatively, if GWS get Collingwood's pick 7 for Treloar, they would have 7 and 9 and then maybe Freo's first rounder for McCarthy, so Essendon could even trade 4 and one or two of their later picks for 7, 9 and 15ish and another couple of their 2nd rounders for Sydney's 15ish, leaving them with 7, 9, 15 and 16 or so. I reckon it would be pretty hard for them to complain about that. The good thing about that too is that with GWS then having pick 4, they'll almost certainly have to give that pick up for Hopper, so they won't be using that pick as a "live pick", which means Essendon would still be a decent chance of landing whoever they were going to take at 4 at 7 and it also means we could get one of the top 4 (excluding academy picks) with pick 5.

Unless we really want to, I don't see why we should have to give up 5. We just need to get creative with all these picks the teams with academies are going to have and to ensure Essendon are going to be able to do a deal or two with them. Then everyone's happy.

I don't hate the idea of 5 & 24being swapped for 10 & 19 with GC. Will 19 on its own get the job done?

Who are the possibilities at 10- Matho, Tucker, Gresham, Collins, Bonner?

I wonder who goes 5-9
Curnow
Weiderman
Milera
McKay
Achee

Any thought Rahul and Barrels? Worth the risk of getting someone decent at 10?

Personally what i would do is offer our 2nd rounders this year and next to essendon.

Give our 3rd rounder to the pies for freeman because lets face it hasnt played a game is out of contract and wants to leave. Our 2nd rounder is over when you consider aish will probably be around that mark.

Down grade pick 5 for pick around 10 and also one around 15. The reason for this is that from 5 onwards it is very very even when you have players like balic, tucker, milera, gresham etc

He is a very private kid , my step daughter goes to school with him and NOTHING no inside word ,
He does speak very highly of StKilda tho if that means anything .
I'm only going off a gut feeling. You think being a Blues supporter he would have come out weeks ago about wanting to join the club. Him not choosing yet makes me think we might be the destination he wants...

I think a fair and reasonable deal would be this years and next year's 3rd rounders to Collingwood for Freeman, which they can then on-trade to GWS in the trade for Treloar. One third is not enough and I reckon our 2nd is too much.

Yeah this is my ideal trade, reckon it's about quality for us now so I don't mind at all missing out on a couple of second rounders, whilst it also being a reasonable deal, perhaps throw in a pierce/wright/Saunders steak knives

Just watched his highlights on youtube. Looks absolutely unbelievable. Does it all. Inside outside. Kicks goals. Lays tackles.

Kicked 5 in a senior SANFL match. Not many 17yo midfielders (he was 17 at the time) have done that ever. Probably in 100 years.
Also ran 7th in repeat sprints at combine this weekend.

That would be fair, however we are not in the business of being fair and with the luke ball fiasco still fresh id stay stuff you here is a 3rd rounder pick either this years or next or he walks to us.

2 third round picks is a good deal for us, it is heavily in our favor and we would be the clear winners. Yes he's hasn't played a game yet but was a top 10 draftee and the club is confident his body will hold up.

If we can get a deal done similar to that early in the week would accept it quickly IMO, no need to totally screw over every club like Essendon have tried to do in the past, look what it has done to them, some clubs wont even deal with them unless they have to.

The thing is though, look at last years draft and the type of quality that is available in the 3rd round. Yea he was a top 10 pick but the kid hasnt played a game and god knows if he ever will. One pick is more than enough to get him down here and a swap future picks maybe.

That is true for last year's draft yes, but this year's draft is much shallower.. I doubt there will be many picks used over 30 other than for rookie upgrades and maybe academy picks etc. There may be a few clubs that take speculative picks but not like in a good draft year..

They say that it doesnt bat as deep, however there are always gems to unearth in every single draft and i for one would rather be able to have that pick than not

Maybe it could be 5 & 24 for 8 & 16 from GWS? That would be far more compelling.

Could work well for GWS if Essendon don't bid on Hopper, they could pick up a top first rounder plus Hopper and Kennedy?

Wonder who they would pick? Weiderman to replace McCarthy?

Then I guess they use 7 on Hopper, who do Melbourne pick? Curnow would surely be a chance, to work alongside Hogan?

This deal might also hinge on Freo having a high first rounder next year, do we trade our 1st for next year for their first plus Weller- hence the Weller talk.

Maybe this has become way to convoluted and more like a conspiracy theory. I will see myself out....

If it is one pick it will likely be a second rounder, probably next years. We would still be winners in that trade without totally screwing Collingwood over. The club would not recruit him if they weren't confident his body will hold up.

We were very lucky to get Lonie with our third round pick (we rated him top 20), but that wont happen every year. James Hird was pick 79, but again that was very lucky. Two picks in the 40's for a former top 10 pick is a bloody bargain!

I hate other teams!
i just worry that this will be the last year we have a top 5 pick and as you said other clubs have given up less for the dons talent. i mean look at port with ryder
Given up less for the Dons talent? Port with Ryder?

Ryder for picks 17 & 37?

Essendon win that trade by a mile.

Kurt Tippett is a better forward/ruck than Ryder, & Tippett is the most overrated & overpayed player in the AFL

Ryder is good, but not picks 17 & 37 good that's for sure

There's a lot talk here that Mathieson is the man we should be drafting and making sure we keep a pick that will secure his services.

Hopefully I'm not the only one that is completely unsold that he is the man for us.

There are a few reasons for this but basically I don't think he his very dynamic nor does he give us anything we don't already have. I agree we need a midfielder but the club has said we've got enough inside mids and we need address a lack of outside run. Parish would be perfect and while Francis may not address this need, he does offer versatility and something both dynamic and different not to mention talent. Although unlikely to be available, even at pick 5, I would take either of those two if available. Otherwise I think it's time, this year, to start addressing needs, take a risk. Not go the safe option in Mathieson, who I see as a solid inside mid which we have in Dunstan, Newnes, Armo, Ross, Weller. Earlier I've advocated for Wayne Milera. I also think Darcy Tucker would give us what we need while like Francis, Curnow offers versatility, something dynamic and something different. I think it is these three we should talking about regarding our top 10 draft selection.

Hibberd and Bonner are guys I'm looking at if we end with later 1st round or early 2nd round selections.

Thoughts?

That was daylight robbery!!

I rate ryder higher than carisle based on performances to date. He was also under contract so based on all of that pick 24 is perfectly fine with a future 3rd as a sweetner

if he does nominate us this week with the new father son bidding would Carlton still try to out bid us even though he nominates Saints?
