I can see a fringe player or two being moved on for token 3rd/4th rounders so that we can protect next year's first rounder from copping a points hit. Perhaps we can accomplish this while also securing Weller?

Perhaps Fremantle may see value in losing pick 22, 2016 first round pick, and Weller for McCarthy and Lee? In such a trade, I hope we could get a cheap pick from GWS that they won't use, anyway. This would leave Fremantle with a 10 year KPF and a solid 3rd tall forward, or defender if they choose. This could potentially take their tall forward stocks from a weakness to a reasonable strength, whilst also preventing them from being forced to play Fyfe forward; perfect whilst they're in their window.
On the topic of Fremantle, maybe Ross may see use in Ray once more? Certainly a handy type that would come cheaply (if not "free", in the sense that he could be an addition to the above trade).

Why we can always trade 2017 picks.
No matter what, it's still a negative.
For example, imagine if we're chasing JOM and Weller next year. JOM will most likely require us to give up our first rounder of that year, and our 2017 first round pick, with maybe something small coming back. Weller, if nominating us, could be secured with a second round pick.....which we won't have since it was traded to Collingwood this year, and we also won't be able to offer our 2017 second pick, due to having traded the first to Gold Coast for JOM.

It could be the difference between getting a great player on the cheap, and missing out altogether.

In other words- sure we can trade our 2017 picks next year... But so can everyone else.

Including those clubs that have their 2016 picks intact, who now have an advantage over us securing a jaeger etc.

BTW, I'm happy with what we paid for Freeman - I think he'll be great... But he did come at a cost.

Yes but we already have a player we want in Freeman so it's not a negative unless Freeman fails.

We have players we may trade next year. Bains would have taken everything into account and will have a plan in place.

I actually feel that Melbourne are building a better list than us.

Especially with 3 & 10 to go with the host of young guys they've got recently
You'd bloody hope so. They've been building for 10 years now!

But on another note can you imagine how furious we'd be if we'd spent pick 24 on Melksham?

Really? I don't see it.

I reckon we have them.easily covered in the backline and forwardine.

Their young mids beat our young miss but Armitage and Steven aren't going anywhere any time soon.

Can't see Port trading Lobbe. They will back themselves in to play finals next year and if they trade Lobbe, who will be there ruckman? Ryder can't play there full time
