Was destroyed by Bruce, then by McCarthy and Cameron (though I think his hip was a factor), has missed the last five games and is still a couple of weeks away. He also carried a hip complaint through last year.

He's a very good player, but hip issues make me very nervous, they tend to degrade more than they resolve; I ought to know, I've been in the frame for a double replacement since my 20s...

Jack Leslie.

Undersized ruck made key defender. 198cm 94kg - or 197cm 98kg, depending on your source - and aggressive, former teammate of Tim Supertatts at Gippsland. Held his own physically against Travis Cloke a few weeks ago.

When in doubt, choose a Jack.

Contracted to 2016 though.
From memory was taken a pick after Blacres. Was a surprise. Is he a Sale or a Traralgon kid?

Good, the thought of them getting a compo pick ahead of us if they lost him just entered my mind.
I'm still dirty Geelong are going to end up with Dangerfield and Henderson and we seem to only be able to lose players. Hopefully a few more players see us on our way up and want to ride the train with us. Geelong are playing a risky game with the buy up but they should be good for a temporary reload.

And that's why the AFL is looking very closely at allocating priority picks again.

It might not happen but they definitely need to do something to offset the way that free agency has panned out.

Past history of who has & hasn't got a PP is totally irrelevant IMO.

You have to tip your hat though, they added Stanley, Rivers, Caddy, Mitch Clarke, Hamish Mc Intosh, Delaney and Blease and still have enough cap space on top of a heap of old boys and promising kids to buy a heap more stars. We should offer $600 000 a year for Tomahawk and a few of Guthrie, Murdoch, Duncan Blicavs etc we should offer good coin to. Maybe even Motlop.

Disagree, Geelong lost the greatest player I've ever seen as an uncontracted player and I'm not sure they've added much via Free Agency lately, without checking.

What are everyone's thoughts in Spencer at the end of the year? Only signed on for one year at the end of last season. Was that his choice or the clubs?

Will he be offered up as trade bait? Will he be offered another contract?

it was most likely a mutual decision to put his contract talk off early as he would like to show that he is worth more and saints want to make sure he realises he's playing for his career

Had a chat today with a very trustworthy source & the word on Spence is simply that his work ethic isn't good enough.

He's got 10 weeks to show that he really wants a career otherwise he's done at St Kilda. Someone else might take a chance on him but if he can't do it under a great development coach & with the tutelage of one of the greatest forwards ever then chances are he won't do it anywhere.

Very disappointing, I really thought the penny would drop & he'd show what he can do.

Interesting that he used to ruck. If he can chop ou in the ruck like Blake used to we might be a good way of keeping Bruce forward?

Potentially could, but I'm pretty confident in saying that you don't mess with a defensive unit by taking out a key defender and chucking him in the ruck.

I've never liked the idea of 2nd ruck being a defender... Forwards can dictate how much running they do and what rest periods they get.. Defenders go where there opponents go and have to run as much as there opponents do.. Chances are they'd be spent before even getting to the ruck ( I know Bruce runs himself ragged though)

I used to play on ball and rotate through half back.. I hated it because the idea of changing off ball was to rest but I'd be so spent my opponent would get off me because I couldn't go with him... Forwards the only place to interchange in my opinion

i just can't see us deleting a key forward who they knew would take time 3 years after drafting him. work ethic or not no point giving up on him.

One year contract to keep him motivated. The plan was if he got off to a good start they'd look at a new deal and obviously that hasn't happened. Source: Ameet himself.

I agree but that's what I was told.

There's still hope & he may be saved due to other blokes being flicked before him.

I really hope he survives as he's got such a point of difference to the guys who look like being our future forwards.

Unfortunately for him, I can. If a guys does not want to put in the effort than he's waisting his and the clubs time. He may have a bit if talent, but he's no Jesse Hogan. Let's hope he pulls his finger out of his bum before the end of the year.

There are a lot more blokes who've carved out AFL careers with limited talent who worked their arses off, than there are precociously talented ones who didn't... Example:

Caydn Beetham - Pick 9, 1999:
37 games (9 goals)

Jason Blake - Pick 24, 1999:
219 games (38 goals)

If you have he ruck down back doesn't that mean you can have a more potent fwd line and play another genuine fwd

Think about all the side carrying a not quite fwd to ruck. Doesn't trouble the defenders

Colin Sylvia or Dayle Garlett too.

I would say most blokes off thr rookie list for the other example

I agree with that point entirely.. But I think it's much harder to play ruck / back than other way around
