The higher your draft number, the less time you have to make it.

Murdoch has already shown more than Acres (for example), yes, he was drafted one year earlier, but he's on the chopping block for some, whilst Acres is the next Pendlebury.

I remember an interview with Lenny when he was retiring and somehow Murdoch was mentioned, and Hayes commented something to the effect of, he's got everything, but it was the inflection in his voice that struck home, it came across as though Lenny had supreme confidence in his talent.

More broadly speaking, clubs are getting more realistic with player development now a days. Youngsters aren't expected to make it by their third season or its out the door. Look at Langford at Hawthorn, or the Cats youngsters - plenty of VFL time and average AFL games in between.

He's shown more than Acres for one.

I don't hear calls for Acres to get the chop.
No he hasn't. Not even close.

Murds has talent, a contract & most importantly, finally a healthy body. 2016 will be a big year for him but surely he's as safe as houses.

Isn't he the lions academy bloke?
Yes but if the Lions use pick 2 on someone else (e.g Schache) and we nominated Keays at pick 5 - the Lions will be in a pickle and be forced to use a high pick (20) meaning we go ahead one spot in the 20s.

Of course if they get a compo pick for Leunberger.... plus something Aish and Redden, they will be able to draft as they please....

Yes he is. I have him as a top 10 pick and *based on the limited viewing I had with the Foxtel games* I really really rate him, but no way is he in front of Parish.
Well I am not going to get in a fight over this. But Knightmare has him clearly ahead of Parish.
Its an opinion game as they say :). Hes also a leftie so Pelchen would love him.

Unless of course they get a compo pick for Leunberger.... In which case they will be able to get both Schache and Keays.
Why wouldn't they have enough points? Can't they use other picks?

If we nominate Keays at pick 5 (1878 points) they need to match that -20%. So they need 15002 points to get him.

Pick 20 - 912
Pick 38- 465
Pick 56 - 194
Total = 1571

So yes. I am wrong! They can still get him if we nominate him at 5....... just.

So we should nominate him anyway - to knock them out of the way at pick 20. This will put us up one place in the 20s.

So we can nominate him and either land him or at least make them pay a premium and we then take best avail.

Trouble is for them that they also have Hipwood's points who they would need to match if they want to pick him up too - hence their demand for a priority pick. As it stands they will likely have to trade out in order to find enough points to pick up both - even and end of 1st round pp would pretty much cover them to pick up all these players even before trades are taken in to account.

This, or worst case scenario for them is they just go into debit. If the 'AFL is corrupt' scenario is explored, they wouldn't actually use the PP (after their first) on Keays either as it would fall before the bid.

Chances are they will lose both Aish and Redden, the picks they receive for these two would then be used to match the bids on both Keays and Hipwood.

sonnywalters Im not trying to 'fight' so apologies if it came across that way, I just don't think Knightmares opinion is the beginning and the end of all arguments - nothing against anyone, just don't agree with him this time as I think Parish is a jet and the best mid in the draft.

Edit: just noticed you mentioned Pelchen, he left last year so wouldn't have any bearing on the decision. As for Libba, Trout and Bains - perhaps they share his love for the leftie? :)

You seriously think he is worth Pick 2 in compensation?

Injury prone, inconsistent?

He is good on his day don't get me wrong but not worth pick 2. The system is flawed.

PS - I also think we got to much for Stanley.
I never said he was worth pick 2. I just said he was worth a first rounder.

Yes, they would. If we bid on him with our pick - assuming no compo picks above us and that Hopper and Mills went above us, then our pick would be #7 - equating to 1644 points. The Lions would have to find 80% of that, equating to 1315 points - they would use their 2nd (#22

Trouble is for them that they also have Hipwood's points who they would need to match if they want to pick him up too - hence their demand for a priority pick. OK so do you think if Mills and Hopper are removed our pick officially becomes pick 7 for the points system? I guess it does... Makes sense.
Not that it matters because the Lions still have enough points for Keays.
But as you say - they cant get Hipwood as well.
Either way they will need to use their pick 20 so - if we nominate Keays - we knock their pick 20 out.
Although with Redden, Aish and Leunberger wanting out - anything could happen. They might end up with a stack of high picks. But nominating Keays early still forces them to use a high pick. So we should do it anyway.
Certainly makes the draft/trade period more complex....

No no i definitely didnt mean that. Poor choice of words from me. Knightmare certainly isnt the be all and end all. I guess I am just trying to say that if we dont get Parish, it may not be the end of the world. It seems Saints fans have their heart set on him. So if he goes at pick 4, some will be disappointed. But at this stage anything could happen. We could be shunted down the draft order a few spots. Maybe we need a Plan B and a Plan C. It seems Parish is our Plan A but that may not work out. So I am keen to discuss alternative strategies.

But I guess none of this will matter. Chances are the Lions will end up with 3 or 4 picks in top 20. They will definitely want to the two Qld kids given their 'go home' problems of late. That is almost certain.
