I don't see how you are coming to the conclusion that he might never play again?
Never play again? Have I missed something?

Had a few too many at Mad Sunday (Suns must have issues with daylight saving), bouncer says out you go, knocks gasper out of bouncers hand.

Make no mistake, a bloke like Bennell is a target for steroid abusing flogs who love their little power trips.

If this drops his value trade wise, take it & run.

FFS one of our players set fire to a dwarf & played the next year!

Edit. Was referring to Fred's post!

Very easily. He might play again but not with us if he mucks up again. Having done something about our culture it would be a disaster to slide back.

It smacks of Lovett Mk II.

I hate other teams!
Whod the bombers get with that trade?
It was traded off in the huge trade that saw the pick 16 (Jasper Pittard) go to Port, Burgoyne go to Hawthorn & Mark Williams & pick 24 (Carlisle) go to Essendon.... And a shuffling of other picks along with Jay Nash

While I understand completely why people want a player of Bennell's calibre at our club, I find it hard to justify taking a risk on a guy like this on the basis of 'we will be able to straighten him out' etc. Every single sign here indicates that this is a guy who will not- possibly can not- change. FFS, he had a picture of himself doing lines splashed across the front page of newspapers across the country, went on the Footy Show and told everyone how desperate he was to never get in trouble again and repay the club, and then this happens. While I agree that the incident in isolation is no big deal, the fact that he let himself get in this position AGAIN, knowing full well the consequences, is damning. For someone to change, they need to be the ones to ultimately make it happen, and it doesn't appear that Bennell is capable or willing to make that happen.

So he was drunk and knocked a smoke out of a bouncers hand? Lock him up and throw away the key! ;)

Honestly though, this just makes him cheaper and probably helps sign his papers. Will be a bargain for whichever club picks him up.
Huge opportunity - throw the house at him.

Bloody hell, he had a dust up with a bouncer, he wasn't on the gear and wasn't DUI (like a certain Hawthorn captain).

Everything, and I mean everything should be done to secure him.

Absolutely worth the risk.

I just don't think we're going challenge for a flag without making a few bold moves... I really have no idea how messed up his life is, but I would certainly be exploring the option of recruiting him.
Pretty unfortunate to have those photos circulated when I suspect many many AFL footballers have been upto the same antics.
If after serious due diligence he's too risky then we leave him, but he's too good a player to not spend serious time investigating.

Only difference with Bennell and those pictures and about half a dozen Saints players from a few years back, is that there are pictures of Bennell.

Cant believe this holier than thou rubbish.

We need to get this type of quality into the club.

Carlisle being prepared to walk into the PSD and leave Essendon with nothing is a heavy dose of karma :rainbow:

i remember this exact same argument for dayle garlett. told people the issue would not be during the season it would be during pre-season when he goes back home. he got homesick, hawthorn let him go back home and then bang everything changed

i think the same shit will happen with bennell, we could probably keep him under wraps and busy during the season but come the off-season he'll be out getting drunk again and making stupid decisions

i would be ok with trading for bennell if he showed an indication of wanting to change his behaviour, but that is yet to occur. he was on his last warning, made all those promises about changing and making people proud/repaying the club for drafting him, then he went and did this. i mean the gold coast havent been able to contact him about his latest issue. what kind of message does that send? tells me he doesnt care what his club thinks or what his responsibilities are to the point he wont even pick up a phone FFS. that should raise a big red flag of us ever being able to change his errant ways

Are you joking? Talk about being over dramatic. Sure he messed up and got busted doing drugs, 2 years ago mind you but what the hell are all the signs he can't change?
This is such a non incident it's not even funny, I think the worst thing to come out of this is the incredibly moronic comments people are making about writing him off.
A change of scenery could be exactly what he needs, and I for one would 100% back our club to be that change.

he wont even pick up the phone when his current club is calling him to find out what has happened/manage the issue etc.

what hope in hell do you have of working with him, when he acts like that?

Most underrated post on this thread.

Lets look at this dispassionately.

Look like Carlton and Brisbane will get a leg up with dps if they lose their ruckmen. Sydney and GWS are already getting a leg up with more top five picks because the AFL commissioners want their $$$$ bonuses so corrupt the system to give them concessions hand over fist.

We need to be bold and take a risk. if we have created a culture that the Saints admin crap on about, well Bennell should settle down and play good football for us.

And we have form. Gardiner had no trouble at the Saints and was a very good player for us.

So point to Lovett. he was already a woman hater and wife basher before we foolishly recruited him.

Bennell did a dumb thing a couple of years back and has now did a steroid filled rage machine a favour by getting rid of his cancer stick for him.

Bloody hell, Gilbo was embroiled in a scandal banging 16 y.o.s. Milne played for us for ten years and has been convicted to sexual assault. There have been big ???? over Sam Fisher and his dabbling in certain substances, Gehrig was too pissed for Bangkok. Joey set fire to a Dwarf FFS.

We don't get Bennell because he is a risk? Give me a break

Completely agree that the club will have to make some big decisions in order to challenge for a flag, and also that many many other players in the comp (likely St Kilda players too) would also be taking recreational drugs. But the fact that he was caught and publicly shamed, pleaded on national tv for one last chance and said it had been the final wake up call after a series of regular stuff ups throughout his career, and yet STILL got involved in something like this, should be setting off every possible alarm bell. It's really not that hard to not get involved in an argument with with a bouncer and knock a ciggie out of his hand....

Not interested in Bennell, the guy will damage our brand waaaaaaaay too much.
Well who are we actually into then? You say that Bennell would damage our brand and I can understand that, but surely our brand and the way the club has changed things around with their appointments over the last couple of years and the promising signs we showed on field this year may be enticing to young and established AFL footballers?
