Look, I want to stress, I have no problem with Bennell going and playing AFL somewhere else. In fact, I think it'd be a tragedy if he doesn't - not only for the viewing public, but for himself: probably the best chance he's got of beating this reputation/cycle etc, is to play footy well, in a good strong culture, like (dare I say it) Hawthorn. Hawks have a great history of rehabilitating players. I'm simply stating we are not the club to do that right now. The risks are too great if he stuffs up (bad for us), but they're also too great for HIM, because I don't think we have the money or background to effectively give him the support he needs to succeed.

So Finnis and Richardson and the rest have been crapping on about our changed culture but you reckon we are weak. How did Hawthorn's culture go with Lance Franklin? Everyone knows what he was doing.

And why cant he get support from the Saints? Why have you such little faith in the club you support?

Joey didn't set fire to a dwarf. Bennell is a dickhead, couldn't give a stuff if he is the next Gary Ablett, he can play in the NTFL.
Would you also rate every indigenous bloke that gets done for drink driving and thrown in jail a dickhead as well? I mean really, what has he actually done? Sam Gilbert is still on our list, is he also a dickhead? Sorry but I don't follow here

No our boys don't drink.

That has all been put on ICE until next season.

Bloody hell there are some very naïve people out there.

Go back to Caro's allegations about one of our AA's. Is he a risk to our sponsors and "brand"?
Bennell is a proven talent, who just might've been caught up in the GC lifestyle..
If a current Tiger, Pie & a Saint, can work through their issues, & bounce back why not Harley.
I could be wrong, but it was mentioned that Harley was a good kid growing up recently.
You are who you associate with, & just maybe Harley could re-discover the self-respect he enjoyed, prior to his move to the GC. And coke is a lot simpler than ICE, to get out of your life. Just ask a Blues player, who is going to be traded in a month.....!!!!!

you do get the difference between a 1 off incident and a sequence of breaches

gilbert complies with what the club expects of him. bennell doesnt

Don't know what Mav Wellers issues at GC was, but was seen to be a dickhead.

Two years later is on the Saints leadership group.

Can turn it around with a good bunch of players and not a bunch of Hunt's about.

Really?
Such a myth about these cultures…
Who have Hawthorn "rehabilitated"?
They left Thompson & Hay for dead when they were in desperate need of support, shoving them out the door to an unsuspecting North for good picks.
They left a famous family son for dead in Travis Tuck after he was found in his car OD'd, they promised to re-draft him but never did.
They took on Garlett last year which lasted all of about 2 weeks.
There was a famous drug culture in the place for years

Don't let the "family" club tag fool you… Hawthorn are just a callous organisation,

Mav's issues were never so widely publicised as Harley's have been.

Amazing that this incident (LOL) is being plastered everywhere yet the skipper of the AFL's golden club can get a serious DUI on the eve of the finals and I've barely heard a thing about it

God I hate the footy media, I know Harley's got some issues but they're out to get this kid.

Go get him Saints, be bold.

Murdoch's media empire is renowned for casting African Americans, Indigenous Australians in a negative light.
This coming from the same rag, that backed James Hird every step of the way.

Linton St The other day you said that "Harley Bennell and Jakey Carlisle are the club's main priorities this off-season". Is this your opinion or is it based off some main you have from an inside source?

I'm with Stavro on this one, buy low on elite talent and Harley would probably be the most talented player on our list, bar Nick. Read what was written after he opened up, he hasn't had it easy growing up and I'd seriously doubt he's had good football mentors in junior footy or at the Suns. He'd greatly benefit from having a strong system around him and being in a fishbowl in Victoria (either that or we'd know very early that he isn't fit to make it). The photo of him was taken 2 and a half years ago, and he's only 22!

In a football/trade sense, feeling is he has played his last game for GCS (at a guess) and I don't think we'll be willing to satisfy GCS in a trade, but who would? I would like to see him at St Kilda, in some ways I would prefer him over Carlisle.

Can you expand on this please? I'm not sure what you mean.

given the karma going around in football... it'd be nice for him to go to essendon after a nice character reference from an ex gold coast player like campbell brown

Forgive me for being a little incredulous about our ability, after years of stuff ups in terms of player behaviour. And heck, maybe you're right, and we are. Are you willing to risk 10,000 members, or a million dollar sponsor? Because I'm telling you right now, if Bennell is on our list and stuffs up, that's what it'll cost us. If you don't believe me, just ask Nettlefold after the Lovett thing went down.

And it would be totally unfair. It was unfair back then, too. The guy never even put on the Saints jumper. But that didn't matter. It doesn't matter that it's unfair either. It just matters that we'd be up the creek - even more than we are - if things went pear shaped, which there is a high potential that they will.

The Sun rag also blamed Liverpool fans for the Hillsborough tragedy as well.

Loves to put the boot into disadvantaged groups.

Hates the working class, African Americans, Middle Easterners, and Aboriginals.

Unless they're super keen to move him on, Gold Coast hold all the cards in terms of him being contracted & having other suitors. I highly, highly doubt (in fact I'd be shocked) we would offer our first pick but his talent and output warrant it. Wouldn't be surprised if he's a Hawk.
