I reckon we should publicly state we are out ... Suddenly hawthorn realise that with St Kilda out they don't need to give up two first rounders for him cause realistically they should get him with just pick 18 ... Suddenly Essendon start to panic because they went to hard and scared us off so hawthorn could screw them over ... Pick 18 to Essendon for Carlsile.. Hawthorn get a bargain st kilda go to the draft ... Essendon are left scratching their head ask what the hell just happened

Refresh my memory, when was the last time an out of contract player nominated a club as his preferred destination, the player came out in the media and said he would be at that club the following season, the nominated club and his current club were unable to negotiate a satisfactory trade, and the player said “OK then, no skin off my nose, I’ll go somewhere else”?

The concern is Jake folds and runs with the Hawks on the basis that we have been unable to get a deal done.

By all reports Jake is dumb as a fricking post and Dodo is well aware of this, definitely susceptible to being threatened by the big bad PSD. The uncertainty won't sit well with home and the Bombers have used that as leverage.

I hate to say it, but they have played this well. They were lucky to some degree that Hawks swooped, but it has worked for them. He needs to come out and say he is prepared to get to the Saints via the PSD, he hasn't. We now definitely have the weak hand.

However, we can't be critical of the club if they hold on to pick 5, we should not give this away under any circumstances. I am over the whole Carlisle saga, more concerned by the fact we seem willing to use pick 5 on Mathieson. If we think we could get him for a pick around 10-11 a downgrade should be considered to secure 2 picks. Well worth the risk.
As a viable option to Carlisle, the form Mitch Brown was displaying at Sandy our 2nd rd pick would be about right.

Pick 5 is too much. Dododododo won't back down because ego is huge.

Hawks willing to overpay as its not that risky for them. Anderson, 2 late seconds and a very late first is worth giving up from a premiers perspective.

A top 5 pick is not from the perspective of a team who's Window won't be open till 2018.

they are approaching a cliff in a couple of years. they will get plenty of memberships and residual fans from going at one more flag. They will be doing well if they get two more years from Mitchell, Lewis, Hodge and Burgoyne and then they need to find some serious quality to rebuild with. I actually reckon this will be their last roll of the dice and they probably won't win one again for another 10 years.

DEFINITION of 'Opportunity Cost'
1. The cost of an alternative that must be forgone in order to pursue a certain action.

This is essentially what it comes down to IMO. what is the opportunity cost to our club for offering pick 5?

Surely next year's 1st would be better for them given the draft pool? we can always trade back in when the time comes.

That's why it probably won't happen we gave our drafting team full control for these situations so we don't give up both 1st rounds for Tom Lee and Hickey and then Grundy Slides past they fixed that when they nabbed Longer so I have faith in their choices except we rookied the wrong Saad but I understand that too

EFC set an internal dead line for the trade. Or at least, thats what was rumoured.
Could be more bullshit to scare the Saints into pick 555.

i much prefer that option. Get Brown with a late pick- screws Essendon who want him. He's actually going to make it a very rounded defence and back a guy like Lee to have a crack if we get multiple tall forwards up against us. I would rather an elite mid from the draft or Francis. Pick 5 gives us the opportunity to get an elite kid in.

Nick Stevens.

But that wasn't quite the same situation.

Hawks wouldn't change the deal if we had 18 and 15 we would hand them over from whats been said about this draft

If their salary cap, player base and draft picks gets them 3 or so miss who'll be around for 4-6 years, they'll get away with it.

They'll fall hard at some point, but if they can continue to buy somewhat low in either salary or draft pick terms, and sell high (Savage, Hallahan, Anderson, Suckling etc.) , I can see it taking maybe half a decade if they're lucky.

Guys how would any of you blokes feel being put in a situation were you could end up in Queensland or back at the club you want out of? It's not as simple as the saints are my only option as essendon could be like well good luck in the draft. It works both ways

i hear you but other clubs seems to be able to get their targets to stick fat and get them to their club of choice

I'd be more than happy to get $1.5m to spend a year in Brisbane or to work for a shit employer before getting to do what I really wanted.

E: Alternatively, I could come out publicly and re-affirm my commitment to my chosen club and explain my willingness to go to the PSD to make it happen. That would help me get to my chosen destination by giving them more leverage.

Nick Stevens.

His manager came out and said he would be happy to go to the Blues.

Where's Carlisle going in the PSD in 2015?

Carlton - he's knocked them back already
Gold Coast - will pass, he won't go interstate
Brisbane - see Gold Coast
Essendon - that club is f**cked

Won't happen, but one of the shrewdest posts I have read on here in a long time. In other words, call their bluff.

Love your work Trav!

Just to be clear we are Carlisle's number one choice. No doubt about it.

Hawthorn is his fall back

Maybe I am being naive, but couldn't the saints chat with recruiters from Bris and GC and get an undertaking that they're not interested in him? Especially at the price tag attached to him.

I would think other clubs would be pretty amicable, especially when they see how bad Essendon have been in this whole affair

Exactly!
This is completely in Carlisle and his managers control.
Only have to come out and state "I will only play for Saints" and it's all over red rover.

I would have thought there would have been an honest conversation about all possible outcomes before the nomination, so that all parties were mentally prepared.

I find it disappointing that it may have taken only 4 days for this trade to fall apart.

Interstate teams probably don't want to force Carlisle to them but its not in their interest to help good players go through the PSD no matter the situation really we just got trumped and unless he really wants to get to use we have to move on grab Mitch Brown or Talia and focus on the players we will get

Dodoro backed himself into a corner and maybe was fighting for his job and you know what they say about a cornered rat.

I'm not sure they got much for Savage, he was steak knives in the Mc Evoy trade. Losing Mitchell who is about 34 next year, Hodge who is 32, Lewis is 30, Burgoyne 34, Gibson at 32 and Rougie is 29 next year. They are approaching a huge cliff. One more year at best and they will fall back. Geelong at least kept developing talented kids. Once the Hawks fall they will nose dive. Their next tier is a long way off those old guys.

Any other club holds firm: “They’re very shrewd operators. Obviously the asking price is a bit high so they’re doing what they can behind the scenes to get a deal happening, but they’re prepared to walk away if a deal can’t be done.”

Saints hold firm: “omg cant believe u st flogs are holding this up lol no player will eva want to come to u now hahaha typical st blunda”

Any other club overpays: “That’s how it's done Saints, get the job done at the trade table. Sometimes you have to pay overs for the player you want. So much more professional than your mob.”

Saints overpay: “lol cant believe you folded we bent u ova st failda suck it minnow flogs”

Are you Jay Clark??
