what are wilson and hampton like? Read they are both athletically gifted and to have played 30+ games for the Giants at least shows they are best 22?
Both seem like talented but inconsistent half back flankers to me. Hampton has probably produced more highlights, but Dlanod is probably right about the Jared Brennan sublime/ridiculously stupid play comparisons. From the little I've seen, Wilson is a long kick and might be more solid than Hampton? Wilson's numbers aren't great, though.

Hampton:

Hampton has fallen clearly behind the likes of Wilson and Buntine amongst the younger Giants brigade. He's really inconsistent - since day 1, he's reminding me of Brennan and at day 1500+ he reminds me of Brennan. He'll go on dazzling runs through the middle, until he either tries to fend off one too many or sprays the ball directly to an opponent. I think he'd be obtainable and he's definitely talented but I don't know if he's going to provide enough impact to be worth what he'll probably demand in trade - a pick in the 20-25 range is my gut feel. And this is as someone who's been a big fan of his since he was playing in the Giants' pre-AFL team.
Wilson's steadier, safer with the ball while still has some of the dash you want from your half back flanker. If that's the position you're looking to fill, I'd take Wilson because you really don't want turnovers coming out of your backline. With my Giants hat on I'd view Hampton as attainable, Wilson as someone I'd like to keep. He might not have the same talent level as Curtley but he's better for your team.

I mentioned Hampton mid season. Kid has so much potential but he could be one of those players who never lives up to his talent. I can see why he would want to leave - he is down the pecking order at GWS - midfielder/flanker - they have that position covered better than just about any club in the comp.

Has pace and nice skills. Outside playe,r not really a player who will contested ball.

If the rumours are true about the exodus from our club you would take him in a heat beat.

Yeah we wil probably see them as something other than HBF as we have a good stock coming through. Would be interesting to see if either could translate their ability to the wing or outside mid. We are lacking in both IMO.

Wouldn't be against having a crack Kieran Harper from North. Showed a bit in his first couple of seasons and fell out of favour. Likely to be delisted so wouldn't cost us anything. Only issue is whether we need another roaming small-forward type.

Would laugh all the way down the Pacific Highway and back to be honest....
I wouldn't. It would just add to the fact that QLD footy is a rabble and when draftees come here with a preconceived idea they wont ever fully invest into the clubs. It will effect both QLD clubs if everyone is jumping ship.

Not sure if wasting a spot on Curtly Hampton is necessary. He's a poor man's Ryan Harwood.

This is great news for us if true, but it surprises me quite a bit. Mumford and Leuenberger seems like a rather cumbersome combination, and I thought Lobb and to a lesser extent Downie have looked quite promising.
In an interview yesterday Leon Cameron was asked about their ruck situation and said they were quite happy with the current state of their ruck department. I see no reason a Mumford-Leuenberger combination would work any better than Stef and Leuey.
Aish: gone
Stef: will almost certainly stay next year, but future beyond that uncertain. More likely to retire than go to another club. Has other things going on.
Mayes: probably gone
Zorko: staying
Paparone: haven't heard anything on him.
Why would we trade a contracted Sam Mayes? What has changed since he loved the club and was showing real leadership 12 months ago? What issues could be so unresolvable?

It might reinforce the notion for young players that Qld clubs are a stepping stone to elsewhere..... It may also put this notion into the brains trust at the AFL (ie its not just a Lions thing) and they may think there is some need to do something about it rather than stripping back the few advantages we have in Qld?

And it would strip a little bit more of the gloss off the plastics which would make me happy. :0)

It really depends on what he'd cost us. If we were to trade a fairly low pick that didn't impact our academy selections it would be worth it. The upside he has compared to a 3rd round pick is quite high. And, even if he is similar to Harwood that isn't an issue. The more competition for spots the better players need to play to retain their spot.

Well, yes. Competition for spots is bigger, except he's actually not that good. If Curtly happens to be the only half backer that's available and willing to come, then by all means get him. Just think he's someone that we don't necessarily need.

Resemblances I can see between Harwood and Hampton:
  • Both don't mind a fend-off.
  • Both can run themselves in trouble.
  • Both play in the defensive 50.
  • Both are pretty good tackles.
Differences:
  • Hampton has better speed and agility.
  • Hampton has a longer kick but more prone to shanking.
  • Hampton is a better overhead mark.
  • Harwood is probably better defensively.
I admit I can't see the "poor man's" comparison.

Now that it is all but confirmed Berger would be leaving at the end of the season, who do we target as a replacement? Z.Smith is IMO the best in the market ATM and he can play forward quite well for a ruck. PSD pick I think.

Similar speed, similar kicking abillity, both love to play on when not always necessary. One huge difference between the two is that Harwood is a hard nut and isn't scared to attack a contest. I've seen Curtly play before and I can't say the same for him.
