Is it just me or does that statement from swann re martin make you more worried that he is likely to be departing.
I was more worried with Martins comment saying he wants to play here, but you never know what's going to happen with life outside of footy or whatever the exact words were. Left it very open.

That article seems to have maximised the drama.

Stef is happy to play here next year and isn't doing so at gunpoint, and if it wasn't for the complexities of his relationship with his girlfriend, would happily sign for four more years tomorrow.

The "won't be traded under any circumstances" quote is more of a pointed message to the vultures at other clubs to tell them to stop with the juicy contract offers to forceably poach him this trade period (or at the very least, come to us with a trade deal too good to refuse).

From a journalistic standpoint it's sexier to try and present it as a "Martin being retained against his will" angle.

There are only two possible scenarios here.

1. Stef plays here next year (happily) and then sees where the land lies.

or

2. Stef plays somewhere else next year because we were very, very well compensated.

As an aside, he is an exceptional, caring bloke and wants to do the best by the club regardless.

Im still firmly in the romantic notion of us taking Wylie Buzza. I like the look of the kid, he screams out Ben Brown to me and as a Rookie pick could be something special.

Could also be another Sam Michael. Who knows.

How well would the Wylie Buzza/Ben Brown comparisons hold up if he didn't actually look exactly like Ben Brown?

Imo the club has been devoid of talent for so long and I am so over us sitting at the wrong end of the ladder each year that I think the club should not only show interest in Bennell but actively pursue him. He is an absolute gun and players like him to not end up on the market often. Yes he has off field issues but to be completely honest I think they have been overstated. They are not at the same extent of the issues of Fevola or Cousins. A fresh start with mentors like Lambert and Robinson would do him good and I don't think there is a better role model then Robinson when it comes to making the most of a last chance opportunity in the AFL after being sacked by a club for off field indiscretions.

If Bennell can stay on the right track with us which is a bigger if for some than others which I completely understand, our will dramatically improve. Will arguably our best player and he would be incredibly damaging attacking through the midfield towards inside 50 alongside Hanley, Rich, Zorko and Bundy.

Question is has he learned anything from the circumstance?

He has a record of off-field issues dating back since he got kicked off the AIS tour, as a 17 year old.

How many chances does one need?

Gold Coast have been more then fair with him and I don't want Lambert babysitting him because he acts like a teenager.

Did he have any off field issues in 2012-2014? The photos released of him with drugs earlier this year were from 2011 or 2012. And then he had the latest issue with the night club security guard which isn't as bad as it has been made out to be imo. The Suns had reportedly already made the decision to trade him before that.

all you have to do is have is contract take into account his past behavior. ie. indescretions = delisting. heavily insentive based contract, top5/10 best and fairest finish, certain number of brownlow votes = bonus $$. worth a go, huge upside for us, there have been a few players on similar last chances and then flourished. stevie j, dustin martin.

Say we were into him. He will come at a price tag of $500,000-$550,000 (according to Barrett). I'm sure, depending how well we compensate Gold Coast, they could pay some of that salary.

It can work, but we must put clauses in he's contract to cover our asses.
