So in summary so far: (if everything goes to plan)

In: Josh Walker, Jarrad Jansen, David Astbury, Tom Bell, Ryan Bastinac, Josh Schache, Ben Keays, Eric Hipwood

Out: Jack Redden, Matthew Leuenberger, James Aish, Luke McGuane, Jed Adcock, Brent Staker, Mitch Golby, Matt Maguire

Fairly happy with that.
Our list age demographics is starting to look great now. The players we are trading in have room to improve as well and while I don't think any of them will be key players in 4-5 years, they will greatly improve our 18-22 players on our depth chart. This is the first time in years that I have felt our list is finally getting out of rebuild mode. IMO if our players stay fit we could be pushing top 8 next season.

I wonder if we'd look at putting Paine on the rookie list. Or perhaps one of Watts or Clayton.
Literally just posted the same thing on another thread suggesting it's pretty much a necessity. Not sure how we can swing doing that to first year draftees. I'm not too knowledgeable on AFL contract law but I'm sure there's something written there that prevents fresh draftees earnings from being affected.

Walkers stats are ok in my book - took more contested marks in 16 games than anyone on our list last season (mcstay closest to him from 20 games). Kicked the same number of goals as McStay in 4 less games while being the bridesmaid to Hawkins (and arguably Johnson and Motlop). Keen to see what he brings if he is the focal point down the forward line.

interesting. Bastinac and Astbury (and Christensen) are from the same '09 draft class - the draft in which we bet the farm on a premiership by trading draft picks for Fevola et al. Might be by chance but a clear gap in our age profile is being addressed

So with trading away our third rounder next year - do you think we should be looking to bring in a future pick. Would the pies do round 2 this year and round 2 next year for aish - if he is to be traded - to have some space for the acadamy lads next year?

If we can get in Schache, Hipwood, Keays, Bell, Astbury, Walker, Jansen, Bastinac, Whitecross and Grimley (as a rookie) that is a huge trade period. However, thats 9 and we only have 8 list spots so we'd have to rookie list Paine/Bewick, and if we wanted to take Chol/William/Wagner in the draft too we'd have to rookie both.

We need 2 second rounders from the pies this year for the academy boys, thats if we are bringing in all the other players.

Looks like our biggest plan in this draft has been to increase our depth, which has been one of our biggest issues.

Certainly these guys aren't going to make us finals contenders, but should improve the list.

As above posters have mentioned if we can keep our points value, while signing players it's a pretty good strategy

So the aish deal is roughly (worst case) 28/32 for aish. (Pies getting those picks from others for various trade out players)

We then do say 32 for Bastinac (not that is bother) and The 17 for bell/astbury trade and the walker/Jansen trade

(maybe somewhere in there we trade out one of our picks 39/44) noting that in trading with so many clubs we have a chance to get back one or more picks in the 60's that have points value.

That leaves us our 2nd rounder (22?), 28 and 39, and our 3rd rounder (42ish) for matching purposes which will be more than enough for hipwood and Keays, and probably a pick for one of the other kids too.

And as per posts above. 8 out and 8 in. With no space for William, Wagner, chol, whitecross.

Probably will free up 2 more list spots I reckon to give us some flexibility.

As I understand it if you rookie a contracted player you can pay them their old wage on the rookie list but it still counts on the cap. Given the cap isn't a problem for us I don't think doing that to Paine would be an issue.

Not only depth fringe-type players but guys with upside. Walker is young, Bastinac/Bell/Astbury have all shown good signs at some point. Reason to be optimistic about their respective ceilings as well IMO

We're getting two mature bodies, one of them a key forward which we desperately need, for one third round pick next year? Where do I sign? I don't care that they don't need my signature - I'm signing something anyway

Smith to Geelong,
Walker and Jansen to Brisbane,
Brisbane's 2016 second rounder to Gold Coast

Thoughts?
Well I was close!

I seriously rate Walker. He's a massive pick up for the Lions forward line.

I remember the first time I watched him play where he scored 3 or 4 goals @ Kardinia Park and I thought to myself 'who the **** is this old bald guy? Never seen him before'. Turns out he's 22 and inexperienced. He's talented and really deserves a shot at AFL footy.

Not quite the experienced Tippett/Dixon style forward that we were all hoping for, but he'll do a job.

To get Walker AND Jansen for next year's third rounder is ******* incredible tbh.

Bell, Astbury, Walker, Jansen are all targeted because they address a need on our list. It seems like we are going a abit crazy by bringing in too many players that might become list cloggers like Bastinac, Whitecross and Grimley. I rather try to get kids like Clayton Oliver, Williams and Chol. They would have more up side then Whitecross, Grimley and Bastinac.

Whitecross wouldn't be a list clogger. He can play, its unfortunate he's had some really bad injuries.

When fit, comfortably best 22 for us

Really like what we are doing this trade week, in Rockliff, Beams, Hanley, Rich, Christensen, Martin, Zorko and Mayes we have elite talent. We struggled this year to find enough contributors, in Bell, Bastinac and Whitecross (if we get) we will get solid contributors. I really like the recruitment of Walker, he will just take the pressure off Freeman, McStay and Schache, love the fact he is only 22. I have that hopeful feeling back, I reckon Astbury, Whitecross and Bastinac (if we get them over the line) are players who feel like they have plenty to prove!

I'm amazed at how underwhelming the players we've been linked to or are looking to bring in are and how any of them are going to turn the club's fortunes around on the back of the quality going out.
like astbury who has managed 17 games the past 3 years... If Leppa talks our list managers to giving up pick 21 for him i'll rage

We have enough quality on the list, we need decent depth. The players coming in will be best 26. At worst, Astbury and Walker gives us depth at each end keeping us from using the likes of Paps as a KPD and the likes of McStay as a KPF. Bastinac and Bell add depth to the midfield immediately replacing Redden and Aish who were best 26 players. Jansen is simply a young developing player, tall mid which we need more of.

We also add 3 first round draftees to our list in Schache Keays and Hipwood. Redden has been replaced well enough, Bergs was pretty much surplus to needs and Adcock i think gets fairly well cover in our 22 as well. Think overall we are at least on par to last year, probably bit more quality depth, not relying on 1st year players. And 3 top 20 talent kids.
